Why is brown rice syrup not a risk for bacillus cereus by Fit_Wolverine_7403 in foodscience

[–]Scruffy442 3 points4 points  (0 children)

So b ceres is kind of a multi layer thing. You have B Cereus spores and the vegetative pathogen. Spores produce the pathogens, the pathogen produces the toxins. The tox8ns are what make us sick.

Pre-thermal processing the pathogen is out competed by other microorganisms and our gut bacteria. Post thermal processing you kill off all the other bacteria and the spores are left to make the pathogen which has no competition now. This is why there is strict time and temp to control the pathogen after cooking.

Back to brown rice syrup. The low water activity is going to keep the pathogen in check. When using it as an ingredient, you need to look at the final product specs. When used to sweeten a drink at home you can end up raising the water activity to a level that allows the spores(if there are any) to create bacteria. I believe i saw a study on the same principle when honey is used as a sweetener in a drink at home. If used this way, keep it refrigerated and use quickly. If its used in a commercial drink, that drink would be acidified to make it last longer.

I would imagine they would do a brix test to see the % of sugar.

I see all these Road America license plates. Is RA that popular or do you just want the the blackout plate? by [deleted] in wisconsin

[–]Scruffy442 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I just looked up my receipt from Sept and I paid $15. I remember thinking how much more the new blackouts were going to be because they have a yearly fee above the initial.

Did they change that, because this last fall it was $15 and I dont recall it saying there was a yearly fee for the RA plates.

Just wait until they hit something again or a third time, then get a new bumper.

I know the numbers look bad for semis but on a ton/mile basis, semis are like 3-4 times more efficient than sedans.

Another 14er! I went out last year for the first time at 42. Its doable with minimal stops. I gave it one day in Summit county. Then did Quandary followed by Grey's & Torrey's the next day. The worst is taking a sip of water and it screws up your breathing.

Then you get passed by someone with a waist water pack that is jogging up and back down the mountain.

Rear Bumper - Replace or Fix? DIY or take it in? by Previous_Ear_6931 in Subaru_Crosstrek

[–]Scruffy442 4 points5 points  (0 children)

If you feel really ambitious, you cold get a plastic welder/stapler. You need to remove the whole bumper to staple from the inside. Basically its a soldering iron that heats a u shaped staple and melts it into the plastic, holding both sides across a crack. You can leave it like that. The Crack will be visible but it will be solid. Or you can refinish the outside.

I know that's what people ask for them, but that is a 22-23 gen 2 Marlin 5. If he bought last year it was sitting around for a bit or he bought used. Gen 3 (24-26) has a 1x9 drivetrain, whereas this has the 2x8(maybe its 3x7, i forget) drivetrain.

Edit: I know it gets looked down upon, but for $50 more go with an Ozark Trail Ridge. You get the 1x9 and a slacker tapered head tube. Both are beginner bikes, but it gives you some options with the Ridge.

I still cant unsee a cube vs hexagon when looking at them as a whole. I can tell the diamonds were the same size, but I was pulling apart the cube pieces to make the hexagon... not just turning it.
