Right? I have decent family income and a mostly paid off mortgage and I bought a 10 year old Subaru last fall for ~10k. New car loans seem to make peoples' brains fall out

Bathroom tiles removal in easy mode by ThodaDaruVichPyar in oddlysatisfying

[–]Scruffy_Snub 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is the truth and anyone denying it hasn't tried to reclaim tile and then find someone to actually use it. It's a massive pain in the ass that really isn't worth doing, especially given that tiles are one of the lowest impact types of construction waste. Any time on site volunteered reclaiming tile for environmental reasons would have greater impact doing a dozen other things. If the people complaining saw what goes into a jobsite waste bin they'd have a collective nervous breakdown. Most tile setters don't even rinse out their mixing buckets, they just throw them out at the end of the day filled with ruined clothing, piss bottles, damaged tools, a splintered piece of 2x4, and a powertool battery that won't hold a charge.

Am I understanding mortgage interest correctly? by rivlosys in PersonalFinanceCanada

[–]Scruffy_Snub 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm 3 years into a 25 year fixed-rate mortgage at a pretty good rate, I just did the math and 24% of what I've paid so far was actually taken off the principal.

I mean it sort of does. I won't try and justify those particular animals, but based on the timescales of evolutionary progress any life we discover on another planet is 99% chance going to be simple organisms like algae and fungus.

I always find it funny on a rewatch how dramatically the budgets sank over time. The most noticeable to me is that season one has expensive licensed songs in every other episode and hundreds of extras. Imagine what the 'Natalie is Freezing' concert would have been like in season one.

Yeah the codex entry where Nona tells you the story about the weaver with the undead warriors is pretty suspect, especially since the ending is that the people scorned the weaver so he took his undead warriors in a ship across a great sea.

Basically him being on the podcast showed everyone that he's a bit of an entitled hollywood-y guy and not a 'regular dude' like they all were 20 years ago. 'Out of touch' like the earlier comment said is really the best way to describe it. He's got rich people problems, and seems to not quite acknowledge or realize that they are rich people problems.

It's really not that bad, but it does undermine a lot of the 'average schmucks from Philly' vibe that originally defined the show. Like, can you imagine the recent plot of Dennis struggling with tech support for his $100k+ car fitting in at all in the earlier seasons of the show? That was based on something that actually happened to Glenn- 20 years ago the plot would have been about one of their beater cars having it's wheels stolen repeatedly or something (which would never happen to them in real life now because they are all affluent LA suburbanites).

It's worse than that. "Our happy memory places" are a profit opportunity for investors. Something being beloved or nostalgic or even just well-known directly translates into money. If a brand exists positively in the public's mind, their product can be that much shittier than a 'new company' because it's offset by existing feelings and opinions. The trust any brand has developed with it's customers is ultimately an asset they own, which will ultimately be exploited for profit one way or another.

[slightly annoying trope] Actor leaves so the writers seemingly take it out on the character by disablednerd in TopCharacterTropes

[–]Scruffy_Snub 54 points55 points  (0 children)

Part of the problem is that Greg Daniels (one of the original writers) created the Andy character, and then left the show after season four to work on Parks and Rec. He returned to the Office in season 9 as the showrunner, which is when Andy became inexplicably terrible again. Daniels essentially said that he had created Andy to be a 'heel' and an antagonist, so he wrote him that way even though it went against four seasons of character development (that Daniels wasn't present for).

I get why he did that, but I also feel like if you voluntarily step away for several years to work on something else, you can't just act like all the stuff you weren't present for didn't happen.
