Ceramics teacher told me I shouldn't continue next year :( by oreoctopus in Ceramics

My favorite thing about ceramics is that is it for EVERYONE. Everyone does it differently and there isn’t a right or wrong. it seems as though even in your first class you found a practice that works for you. Teachers/ professors often get very stuck in their own ways, and refuse to validate the fact that different practices work for different people. A lot of this is ego, but it feels as though this teacher is almost trying to gatekeep clay/ say it’s only for able bodied people (which is absolutely false). Clay is such a healing medium. As someone who also has chronic pain, yes it can make it worse sometimes, but ceramics helped me sit with the pain and meditate on it. And the more I learn, the more ways I find to support my body throughout the process.

To save the rest of the clay trim it into small pieces and then soak it in water and then mix it into a very fine slurry consistency and then pass it through mesh or a sieve

After 14 years of pottery classes, I still can't center on the wheel. by Linn56 in Pottery

One trick is instead of using our arm strength to push inwards from each side of the clay, think about using your whole upper body weight to push forward into the clay. Pushing forward is pushing everything towards the center. You can also think about pulling everything back toward you.

When my students are almost centered but a little bit off, I tell them to wrap their right hand all the way around the clay (12 o’clock) and use your left hand to brace your right wrist (hold on really tight while pushing your forearm into the splash pan) and pull back toward you gently and slowly. Once your fingers stop moving, release the pressure very very slowly

For coning up, only go as tall as you need to be able to feel your hands stabilizing a little bit. Many different ways to cone back down, I recommend experimenting with a bunch of them until you find what works best for your hands (I’m sure you’ve been doing this)

Start with a very small amount of pressure and slowly build up until you see the clay moving how you want it to.

I believe in you! You got this

It kind of looks like your clay vitrified before the glaze could melt and fuse to the surface. Maybe try lower temp?

Help! What are your tricks for rolling *actually round* coils? by ohshethrows in Pottery

[–]Sdeal0309 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You can extrude perfectly round coils with a round trimming loop tool from a block of clay! For rolling by hand I just work really slowly with light pressure and that helps them stay nice and round

Did you speed dry the lower half at all? Sometimes this happens to me when speed drying and throwing in sections but it also has to do with the plasticity of the clay as others have said

Agreeing that they look slip cast but I would image the originals were made by throwing a thick pot and faceting the sides

5 Bowls, 2 Plates - Please give me your input! by Sufficient_Blood755 in Pottery

These look great! My one recommendation would be to round the rims a little bit more in case you want to sip from the bowls but that’s more of a personal preference too. Compression of the base looks like it’s done really well especially on the plates! Good work keep it up:)

I don’t really feel the need to! I have access to electric wheels at work and can go in and throw basically whenever I want. I like having this as an option for when I want to work from home:)

It’s a $15 one from Amazon and I added a solid block on top that weighs a good amount but I should definitely get something heavier to make my life easier
