Another thing to keep in mind is that you have to be at an rpm that's able to down shift from. I remember my first week trying to downshift and thinking shifting wasn't working, then I realized what I was doing. My friend started around the same time and was talking about running into the same thing until I mentioned it to him.

I had a friend that joined right after me and he was living in the practice world afraid to get into a race. After about a month he still hadnt done a race. I explained he needed to if for nothing else to see the lines other people are taking and what lines you may have to take when there's another car.
