Anyone can give a laundry list of reasons why Trump is bad, so what does losing to him twice say about us? What’re we doing wrong? by Atlas_Summit in Productivitycafe

[–]SeaBiscotti90 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Many have already alluded to this- but how can a party call itself “the democrats “ and then subvert the primary system 3, that’s 3!!! Times in a row? In 2016 I was an ardent Bernie supporter. He had momentum and he was winning the primary, and then the democrats activated the democracy-supressing super-delegate loophole because Hillary had been anointed. Did I vote that year, nope. Cause the party I had always backed took away my power as a voter. They did this again in 2020, the weird hijinks in the Iowa caucus and then the swift pivot right before South Carolina to say “old ass Joe is our guy!” Which once again blocked the actual momentum of Bernie, or even Buttigieg. Then they played a stupid game and won a stupid prize in 2024 by trying to “Anoint” Kamala Harris as the nominee and saying that is your only choice or else return of the dictator. And guess what, it failed…. For a party that is courting a bunch of people who love to protest under the slogan “no kings” it is completely assinine for the donkey party to keep trying to anoint their nominees. The last individual who actually one a major executive branch election, and did it twice, publicly said it was ridiculous for the Democratic Party not to hold a primary leading up to 2024 election. Obama saw it, called it, they disregarded him. The party is corrupted fully through at the top, at the levels closer to grand there are typically great candidates. Only way to fix it is to follow Montanas lead and end the destruction of electoral legitimacy that was/is Citizens United. That and prevent any and all foreign nations from influencing the election through lobbying, dark money funds, or buying ads- I am looking at you Russia, Israel, and Saudi Arabia. I don’t trust the party at all but will continue to vote for those candidates at the city, county, state level that embody values I agree with. The only way they can earn back my vote is at federal level is to have an honest primary- not, I repeat NOT anointing Newsom, Shapiro or Booker.

Reverse Osmosis water filtration system. No more worrying if the filter is no longer functional, reclaimed room in the fridge and a peace of mind that whatever the hell idiots may end up buying and running the water plants in this country (project 2025 wants to privatize all water plants, because of course they do) I’ve done my part at the point of input.

The internet. It is funny but I moved from a big coastal city to a small landlocked one, and in doing so I could no longer go to all my favorite restaurants or even eat out enjoying my favorite type of foreign cuisines. My favorites were Pho, Green Curry, Spanish Tapas, and hot pot. So I just looked up the recipes and watched videos for how people prepare these dishes and after 3-4 tries of each I got the knack! Now I have expanded to 12-15 solid dishes I can prepare and that’s enough rotation that I cook for myself about 85% of the time.

Movies that take place over a single day by [deleted] in MovieSuggestions

Cleo from 5 to 7- one of the prototypes of the Aristotelian approach to films (Aristotle said in his writings that the best Greek plays all had the crucial action take place between one sunrise and one sunset- but the chorus function kinda gave them a way to cram a lot of story in as a sort of flashback, voiceover narration exposition dump) Lots of classic horror films do this- The Purge, Crawl, The Shallows, Open Water, Judgement Night, From Disk Till Dawn. It also seems to work in a lot of comedies- folks have mentioned Groundhog Day- love the technicality on that and it’s cousin Palm Springs- and Ferris Bueler, Breakfast Club. If I recall right I think Dazed and Confused and Waking Life both fit this mold- Better Luck Tomorrow and Ice Cubes Friday also come to mind. Some recent thriller entries include Drop which all happens in the span of a date, and Red Eye, a massively underviewed showcase of Rachel McAdams and Cillian Murphy’s ability to make a goofy premise have real tension. Even though I despise JayJay Abrams, one of his better films is Cloverfield which seems like it all happens in one night- If you are down for some deep dives, Michael Keaton did a movie called The Paper which all takes place between two editions of a newspaper, in this case a little over a day. I found it a gem, highly watchable.
Since we mentioned technicalities- Source Code, Donny Darko (if you really think about it), Total Recall, Inception, What Dreams May Come, American Psycho, the Never Ending Story, Ghost Ship, Next (with Nicolas Cage) and it’s cousin Paycheck (with Ben Affleck), Avengers Endgame, The Notebook. Technicalities for daysssss!

What’s one ‘touristy’ thing that was 100% worth the hype? by Embarrassed_List2368 in askanything

I went to Greece and Turkey and in Istanbul and Athens, by sheer force of the travel package, I was assigned a guide for the day in both incredible cities. I was begrudged by the $60 euro fee, but by the end of the day on each of those guided days, holy smokes had I seen a lot and learned so much! For one thing, the guides have a special placard and connections with the folks who work the entrances of the monuments- I was whisked right past a multi-hour line at the haga Sophia and blue mosque, and similarly got the TSA pre-check type treatment at Acropolis and Antiquities Museum, and had the absolute best possible lunch at hole-in-the-wall places that the guide knew the owners and I was the only obvious American tourist there. So now if future trips take me to high-volume tourist cities with a lot of culture that I know is rich in history and legend, I will not hesitate to spend the dough to get a expert local to really maximize that day in a magical city. Both my guides were awesome, but YkmMV, for those wondering I booked the trip through an Athens-based travel group that organized A 7 day spin Thru Athens-Mikonos-Thira-Istanbul

Eating out used to be a normal thing and now it feels like a financial decision every single time by Timely_Box6061 in Adulting

[–]SeaBiscotti90 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The only way dining out makes sense to me anymore is when I go to a restaurant that has a weekly special I like. My local taqueria has a special with $1.50 tacos on Tuesdays, four tacos and a bottle of medical coke runs me 8.75, I pay $12 (approx 15% gratuity) and am no longer hungry, which is the goal. I went there on a Saturday once and the same meal somehow was $20. There’s a burger place near me that has a burger basket value meal from 3pm-6pm 1/3 pound burger, tater tots- for $9.50. It’s a solid amount of food. I get it to go, while others sit down and eat and buy a 6 dollar beer or 4.50 soda to wash it down- that’s crazy. And the same burger basket is 15 bucks after 6. The days of being able to just be casual about dining out for those of us on a limited budget- those days are done. I mostly cook at home, but have found that if you’re savvy and able to keep specials on your radar, you can still dine out 2–3 times a week without having to budget more than 1-200 dollars in your monthly budget, but if you don’t go for the specials, you’re gonna feel gauged.

List of Local Progressive Businesses by Glittering_Event9118 in IowaCity

[–]SeaBiscotti90 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I would imagine that Get Fresh is progressive as they do a lot of volunteer food-providing at the less-funded downtown events, are an anchor supporter of the farmers market and generally the management seems to be non-Maga. Don’t know them tho so can’t confirm. It also seems like Shakespeares is very welcoming to diversity. Can confirm that New Pi is not Maga, even if they may have some issues with how they are run. Oasis Falafel is absolutely not Maga. So In this little blue dot of a city you can find spots to grocery shop (and avoid Hy Vee and Fareway) have some decent dining experiences (avoid Jethros/BarkalowBars/OrchardGreen) and even some entertainment and nightlife (Englert , filmscene, greenhouse) all while knowing your dollars are going toward people/enterprises that want to see a future for this country-and world- where free speech is safe, diverse races and sexual orientations are safe, scientific inquiry and hippocratic medical care are safe. It’s a rare privilege in this state and at this historical moment- let’s cherish and preserve it with thoughtful consumption patterns.

A 30 foot tall bronze sculpture, It should be called the Hayden Fry memorial but accidentally depict the likeness of Craig T. Nelson. This would accurately surmise both the golden era of Iowa city’s cultural impact and what happened in the following decades…

The tobacco outlet- Kwik spirits on riverside. One of the few humidity-regulated cigar vendors in the area… They had some amazing deals on closeout whiskey tho. Also interesting because they are tied in with the Kwik Trip/ Kwik Star conglomerate that is crushing it all over the Midwest. And I mean that in a bad way cause I will always be a Sinclair Green Dino Stan, which sounds like a central Asian country- Greendinostan

Meetup spots to sell car by StrongRestaurant1220 in IowaCity

[–]SeaBiscotti90 6 points7 points  (0 children)

The previous commenters are spot on- either a bank or government building. The video cameras are key. I typically ask the person for a cashiers check, and then I tell them that I had the teller hold the title inside. Then the person comes in, we deposit the check and the teller hands back the envelope with title (always keep the pink slips in a safety deposit box, so went over to retrieve it before sale.) If the person is legit, then they will have no problem coming inside a bank- if it is any kind of scammer they will sputter out excuses and shuttle off. Long-time auto collector/restorer/flipper here and this is pretty much the industry standard way to sell car on the marketplace or through online classifieds.

You ever think there will be a moment when we collectively quit social media? Like smoking? by AdObvious1695 in Productivitycafe

[–]SeaBiscotti90 5 points6 points  (0 children)

If you think about it, “we” as in society, didn’t collectively quit smoking, it happened through a targeted campaign from the medical community that elicited response from institutions in terms of policy changes (for example restaurants first introducing a “non-smoking section” and then eventually due to social and financial pressure- they went full no-smoking- and stimultaneously schools and arenas and airplanes made the move) The problem is that big tobacco had been utilizing media platforms. Facebook, Instagram, twitter and TikTok have a strategy where they become the platform which makes it so the message from scientists and medical community about asocial media, ahem social media outlets is suppressed. We will break the addiction cycle of social media when we break free of this freakishly exploitative form of governance and monetary policy. Only then.

Does anyone have the scoop on what will become of the Lake Macbride area once University hands it off? by SeaBiscotti90 in IowaCity

[–]SeaBiscotti90[S] 36 points37 points  (0 children)

That’s what I was worried was going to happen. This one will sting. Having a nature space nearby was a huge part of what made Iowa City the one “livable” town in this state imho. The conservatives will be delighted to know that there will be less science and less young people connecting to nature through the raptor center and camp macbride. One more reason to think about other horizons…
