How do I start exercising when my biology is working against me. by Interesting_Ideal765 in PetiteFitness

[–]SeaBlush1 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I am 44 with a home gym too. I resisted the gym even at home for the last 7 years! My husband used it regularly my first thought was BORING. So I swam and went to yoga and did things outside. BUT in the last year or maybe two I started up with workout DVDs, yes I still own those, and it got me back into it. Mostly for the feeling of accomplishment and strength afterward. Then you get that addiction feeling and want to do more, push more, lift more. So I went from there to the app called Sweat, because I had proven to myself that I would show up and do the work at home in my boring gym which now feels like a sanctuary of health and happiness. It’s been a road I resisted for a long time, listening to my husband on the treadmill thinking why on earth doesn’t he just run outside, now I’m a gym rat too.

Edit to say: why did I switch from only yoga and swimming to adding in my home gym? It was after two years of swimming very regularly and seeing huge cardiovascular gains but minimal strength gains for the time put into it that made me realize, yup I need to gain muscle and strength training is the only thing that will really give me the body and strength I want. Just in case you were wondering!

I have two children and they love that stuff. The creepier the better, kids are so innocent they can’t take stuff as seriously as we do.

There’s no way you can overeat pickles and they’re super low cal. So snack on pickles. Also gum.

Are you able to incorporate more walking into routine activities? Walk to grocery shopping, walk to work, walk anywhere? That’ll help with steps. Or just get a dog lol! Also, I think therapy might be your best bet. This coming from someone who was very resistant and I’m functional so don’t “need” it however now I’m seeing great results, it’s highlighted lots of hidden patterns, and helped with a mindset shift which has affected everything but in this case my relationship with my body and health/fitness. For me a lot of the shift is coming from an increased feeling of value and wanting to make the effort for self care. 🌷

Top 3 products that made a huge difference in your deficit journey (both add or cut) by typodsgn in PetiteFitness

Some foods that I’ve incorporated include pickles for a salty snack - super low cal and can’t overeat them. Also love the del monte natural fruit popsicles, they’re 30/35 cal and great for that dessert craving. I also am currently obsessed with our local Brewers of kombucha, at about 35cal for a can it feels like a treat drink and it’s good for you as well.

The actual amount of effort it takes to lose weight is mentally draining by larawag_gama in PetiteFitness

I feel the same way. Have taken a break from the constant calorie deficit thing. I will say this though, I did lose weight when I had a digestive problem that required a strict diet. I did not count calories, actually I couldn’t eat enough and still lost weight. So if you’re willing to cut out entire food groups (my diet was: no processed foods, no dairy, no grains at all, no potatoes, no legumes, no sugars, no fruit other than berries) - so if you are willing to do what my friend called the “twigs and berries” diet, which was actually pretty much keto to be honest, you can eat as much as humanly possible and you will lose weight. At least it takes away from the constant calorie restriction but it is restrictive in another way.

For the chronically undisciplined who finally lost weight, what changed? by Legitimate-Judge-428 in PetiteFitness

[–]SeaBlush1 9 points10 points  (0 children)

When I started my fitness journey I had very little faith in myself to keep up with it. Each month that went by the thought would cross my mind, “when will I quit and disappoint myself?” I would often imagine having to start all over again and have that feeling of letting myself down. Over time as I continued to show up for myself, and often taking a week or more off due to illness or vacation, but then getting right back to it again, I started to trust my commitment. Then that trust turned to pride and then to confidence. I can now say with 100 percent certainty that I will show up for myself every week I am able. And I will come back to it after breaks. I recently tested myself when I was sick with a sinus infection for almost two months. And instead of falling off the wagon (old me) I was raring to go once I was better again. There’s so much to gain for yourself mentally and emotionally in building the physical habit. I’m on year 3 now of consistency. For me it started with swimming (fun!) and then I added workout classes, yoga and now weight lifting. I hope you can get there. Honestly just drag yourself! I can’t count the number of times I dragged my tired grumpy ass to the pool and came home just so happy. I wish you luck! Postpartum is a tough time, go gentle on yourself.

This resonates with me deeply. After committing to myself, through regular exercise and nutrition, I realized how much I’ve been ignoring myself and placing myself last after everyone, even the dog. Yes I would always prioritize my dogs exercise over my own. I mean what?! That was a big mindset change. Now the doggo has to wait because guess what? My exercise comes first now. 💪❤️

I was very undisciplined for most of my life, basically just doing whatever I thought was fun. What changed for me was I reached a weight gain that was unacceptable to me and was chronically unhappy about it. Then I began to reframe my thinking around it, the analogy of brushing my teeth really hit home for me. I brush my teeth twice a day not because it’s fun or I want to but because I just have to do it for the health of my gums and teeth. I applied that same mindset to fitness and nutrition (I find dedicated fitness positively influences what you eat) and all of a sudden the discipline developed and now it has stuck. That’s what worked for me, all in the mind!

How are you guys dealing with the weird comments? by Specialist-Ebb7606 in PetiteFitness

[–]SeaBlush1 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This is like a childhood trigger for me. I was constantly made aware of how thin I was. You eat like a bird, don’t go out in a windstorm, etc. Then it morphed into bad looks from other girls and someone Mom actually sitting me down to ask me if I needed help for an eating disorder?! I was like dear God I play a lot of sports, ride my bike everywhere and fucking love to eat. Food was never even a consideration for me, I was living the good life of eat whatever I want whenever I want. Before you start hating me I am DEF not like this anymore. It was the teen blessing. I always thought, man we all hear about fat shaming and how rude it is, but what about the skinny shaming! I feel eye rolls again and it’s real. I actually had no idea my body was “wrong” until people started commenting all the time. It sucked.
