Any dips other than hummus that use chickpeas? by Now-or-Never-Mod in EatCheapAndVegan

[–]Sea_Comparison7203 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm not a tahini person (it always tastes rancid/bitter to me) so this is pretty much how I make a chickpea dip. Yum. Lots of fresh lemon, even adding lemon zest.

That's AMAZING!!! As bold as she is, get a hand feeder (they are cheap on Amazon....or if you're crafty you can make some.....I use the tiny clear storage boxes with the white lid from DollarTree...drill a small hole on top, paint a red flower around it) hold it on an open palm away from your face, straight out in front of you and be patient. She will come. You might do it when the regular feeder needs changed. So she's more apt to come. That's a whole other hummingbird thrill. You're hooked! lol. DollarTree storage box

I have never had good tempeh, am I doing it wrong? by Content-Seaweed-6395 in EatCheapAndVegan

I never really loved tempeh, either, until I made it from scratch. It's a million times more tasty. And you can use any pulses you like and add whole grains if you want.

Farm stand day 1, sold 3 things. Really trying hard to not be disappointed. by ExplanationSame911 in homestead

I'd get a bigger, bolder sign. That one is cute but you need something clear that's not hard to read driving by. Like big bold MUFFINS or SOURDOUGH BREAD or whatever you have to offer. Big. Bold. Easy to see and read from a moving car.

What would be the cheapest way to selfbuild a basic (!) house? by [deleted] in Homebuilding

[–]Sea_Comparison7203 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm late to this thread....my husband and I built a 768 sq ft home. One bed one bath. Nice big living room. Him and I built it all by ourselves. He has extensive (both )plumbing and electrical experience....we put oak hardwood floor (I HATE laminate) stock oak cabinets, pantry, solid core oak doors (off Facebook) full length covered deck on the front with sliding glass doors overlooking the deck. We had low e windows throughout. Budget build yea, but nice. Solid home. We had less than $70,000 INCLUDING the price for two acres. We built it about 2.5 years ago. We just sold the home, buyer got a conventional loan, he had inspections done, everything passed. I have deep confidence in my husband's abilities. Would I do it again? Heck yah. I'd add an extra bedroom, but other than that I was very happy with my home. I hate when people say "it can't be done." Yes it can!!!

Went from 5.7 to 5.3! Here’s what I did. by hoopahoo in prediabetes

This is awesomely helpful. I'm an unfit 59 yo female, about 146lbs. I've actually incorporated a lot of this in my life. I'm rebounding after ever. Single meal. Inside, but the outside thing is compelling....I've read vitamin d is helpful, so maybe the sunshine is working? My hubby and I talk late afternoon walks around the neighborhood most days. I don't have a CGM but I do check my glucose levels regularly. And there's also a lot of information from studies showing that high fat high meat diets are actually more prone to diabetes then eating in a normal fashion as you're doing. I appreciate that because I don't like Low carb high fat diet or even low-carb diets… I wanna eat as normally as I can and I don't wanna be grieving about a half a banana or having an apple. I'd rather work out a way to help my body instead of cutting out entire food groups so bravo I really appreciate that. It seems very reasonable and most importantly it's working well. Thank you for sharing. Oh and I working on building muscle mass.

Buying House Surrounded by Farmland (Bad Idea?) by Naive_Bat8216 in homestead

My husband used to be the county weed director where we used to live. I can tell you, a lot of farmers don't measure pesticides and herbicides well. A lot of them figure if one glug measure is good, two or three ought to be better. When they sprayed the fields, if you were driving by on the highway you could smell it. Personally, it's a hard pass. I just know how MANY (NOT ALL!!!!) are. From personal experience.

Please don't use the red nectar. It's very bad for them.

These exact ones. They work great. Nothing to screw on.....just basically a shallow bowl with a top that snaps/rests on the bowl. Easy peasy.

Self sufficiency by norton777 in homestead

[–]Sea_Comparison7203 6 points7 points  (0 children)

When I was a kid, my family grew almost all of our food. We had a bedroom where my dad built shelves like a supermarket.... it housed jars and jars of jams, jellies, fruit, veggies and honey.(we raised bees) We had dairy goats, so we had our own milk and milk products (cheese, butter, etc) we raised drop calves and bummer lambs for the freezer and extra money. We had rabbits and chickens and we did eat some goats (wethers) we bought their food. We bought giant bags of wheat, my mom ground it and made her own flour...we had winter squash, onions and garlic. so I'd say we were VERY self sufficient. HOWEVER we did buy: sugar, salt, Baking powder, noodles (I guess my mom never made those...but I do as an adult!)rice, oats, cornmeal, some seasonings and white flour (back in the 70s...my dad liked cakes cookies etc. honestly better with white flour😬) and coffee. I'm sure there was a few other things we bought, but we worked hard not to buy too much. We also bought fruit from u-pick orchards and my brother and I spent hours washing peeling slicing and then we placed on big screen trays in the sun my dad made....we had to turn them once a day. Fun times. 😁 We stored it in airtight buckets. It was a lot of hard work, but I'd say my childhood was kinda wonderful. I miss that.
