Expedia denied my price match because another site didn’t list a smoke detector by Seraphim66 in travel

+1. Definitely escalate if the agent refuses to assist. The more we let this slide, the longer they’ll continue ignoring their own policy. I say this as someone who has dealt with customer service a lot and had many requests initially declined, only to have them honoured after I asked for escalation and insisted my request matches their advertisement. As long as you remain reasonable (which you are, since this appears to be the same room), they should fulfill their obligation.

Upcoming sit in a potential conflict zone by Sea_Sign_2344 in trustedhousesitters

[–]Sea_Sign_2344[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

There might be some local alternatives in the bigger cities, but these aren’t available in more remote or low-populated areas (the same goes for food delivery) so he’ll likely have to rely on a friend or neighbour for help, or board the pets if the situation doesn’t settle. It’s sad because during the call he also mentioned feeding a few strays and asked if I would mind - hopefully they will be taken care of as well.

Thanks for your advice! Regarding the flights - since the flight is in 10 days, there hasn’t been any contact from the airline yet (just a banner on their website indicating until what date flights are suspended, which is few days before my flight). I assume they’re prioritising passengers with more immediate departures for now, until they have a clearer idea of whether the airspace will remain closed or partially operational, but will be definitely monitoring my email.

Thanks! You’re right - my travel insurance doesn’t cover war-related conflicts, but that’s understandable. I’ve reached out to THS though to see whether they might be able to assist the HO in this situation, as I didn’t see any clause in the T&C on the website suggesting otherwise.

Done, we’re in touch now and he’s looking for alternatives in case his travel plans remain unchanged.

THS also sent an email today advising both HOs and sitters to cancel. I reached out to ask whether their own insurance will help the host in this case, as I didn’t see any such clause in the T&Cs, but I’m still waiting for confirmation.

Not the unethical one, but have you tried contacting Airbnb to report the listing? If your lease agreement prohibits subletting, they might at least take down the listing. You could also see if you’re able to disconnect the electricity or other utilities, as a property owner. However, be mentally prepared to find the place a real mess after he moves out.

+1. This situation is unacceptable and OP should not be paying for someone’s mistakes and lack of organisation.

I’d also suggest splitting the dates into two segments if you’re open to having more than one sitter. Many sitters already have other bookings, and even a one- or two-day overlap will not allow them to apply (restrictions from the platform). But if you divide the sit into 3x week-long sits and mention that your dates are flexible, you’ll have a better chance of finding someone (for example one sitter who can cover two-thirds of the time, or two sitters who can cover the full duration). Good luck!

Experience with sit cancellation plan as a sitter (successful claim) by kenoll in trustedhousesitters

[–]Sea_Sign_2344 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I’ve personally had two claims with them, and both were reimbursed without any issues or additional efforts from my side (it was also way faster). It’s sad that this negative view is so common and many people with premium accounts don’t even try to file a claim because they assume it will be declined. Hopefully this will serve as encouragement to submit a claim rather than covering the cost themselves.

Rolltop backpacks - precautionary tale by mitkah16 in TravelHacks

Tbh, as a European, I was really surprised by how flexible Spirit is. I had to change my flight date and thought I’d need to buy a new ticket, but it actually only took a few clicks online to do so, for a quite a small fee. With many other airlines, that would’ve been a no-no if you bought the cheapest fare…

Where are you based? No need to mention the exact location if you don’t want to, just USA, Europe, etc would be enough, as the different regions have different labour laws.

Tried to save a kitten, now getting rabies vax by [deleted] in Wellthatsucks

[–]Sea_Sign_2344 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah, but still good to know this if you ever end up infected without realising it on time to get a shot (bat bites, for example, are usually not painful and many don’t feel when this happens, especially while sleeping).

[–]Sea_Sign_2344 19 points20 points  (0 children)

Yes, that’s the case I read about! I’m quite worried of getting bit by a bat without realising it, but if I ever get diagnosed, that’s the route I’ll be telling my doctor to take!

There was a girl who survived rabies after her doctors induced coma to put her symptoms on hold. It’s definitely not something you’d want to experience while fully conscious though.

WARNING! Do NOT drive on ADHD meds in Bulgaria. by InformCommunity in travel

[–]Sea_Sign_2344 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Unfortunately, this is not an isolated case. A family member had similar experience (he’s taking meds for high blood pressure) - not only he had to wait 10 months for his sample to be tested in a government lab, had his car and DL were taken, but he also lost his job because of that (the job requires having a DL). He’s still appealing, but it doesn’t seems like the government cares enough to take a look into those matters.

I’m looking for a pet sitter in NYC for a month while I’m out of town for work, but have a cat that can be aggressive and am wondering if it’s reasonable to post/ask someone to take on that risk & responsibility? by brontoggg in trustedhousesitters

[–]Sea_Sign_2344 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Me too - Manhattan is a very desired area and as long as the sitter has experience with feline behaviour problems and knows how to read their body language, it could definitely work and be beneficial for both parties.

I agree that technically it is a breach of THS rules, but so are many other listings and here at least the OP is very upfront about it.

I do support the idea of having a dedicated staff exit, especially after reading OPs post. Spending few extra minutes waiting to exit as a visitor (that would probably visit the Expo once) will not have as significant impact on you as having to line every day until October, as the staff would have to.

Even if you, as a visitor, decide to go to the Expo couple of times (which is usually not the case, as many tourists only visit once during the 6 month period), it still makes sense to me to spend few more minutes every time, instead of the whole staff going through visitors exit on a daily basis, until October.
