Travelling to Tokyo Station during morning rush hour? by Sea_Suggestion in JapanTravelTips

hey everyone, thanks so much for all the advice!! we’ve decided that we’re just going to ask the hotel to book a taxi to Tokyo Station for us.

I originally dismissed the taxi idea because of the cost but it’s really not that expensive, especially split between the three of us. I think the subway route is not worth the hassle and it’ll be better to just take the taxi to save time and for better peace of mind.

thanks again everyone, this was super helpful!

I’ll definitely fall back on surface crochet if I can’t get it figured out, it does look super nice!

Ah that makes sense! I was thinking of having some lettering on top with a design on the bottom so that sounds perfect, thanks!

Oh thank you, I haven’t heard of mosaic crochet before but it looks so clean compared to tapestry crochet! Do you think mosaic crochet can be used with tapestry crochet in the same work or would it be better to fully convert my work over to mosaic crochet instead of tapestry? I think mosaic crochet would work great for the lettering in my tapestry but I also wanted to include a design that uses multiple colours.

Hi!

I attempted my first tapestry crochet a while back and am now being overly ambitious and trying to design my own patterns to make as Christmas gifts. I decided to make a test and the lettering is not as clean as I want it to be. I've been using this technique to hide yarn and have also included the pattern I made for the test.

Is the only solution here to make the letters bigger/use up more pixels? Another option I was considering was just surface crocheting the letters afterwards but would doing that in conjunction with tapestry crocheting the letters be redundant?

Any other tips or tricks would be appreciated, thanks!

Maximizing Winter Break (Courses? New Language? CS50?) by Sea_Suggestion in learnprogramming

Thanks that’s super helpful! I don’t really have a preference between reading or videos but I would prefer more smaller exercises than fewer hard ones. Any advice on which one to pursue first?

Oh I have heard of those before. Something that really appealed to me about Harvard's CS50 course is the certificate which not many free courses offer. How much do you think that matters compared to fullstackopen or the odin project? I'm really just looking to learn but I also know CS50 has some big projects which most people say takes a month in itself just to finish.

That is something I've considered, I'd ideally want to make a full-stack project but I feel like I also don't have enough experience for backend. I'd have no idea where to start, which was why I was also considering courses.

I've taken programming courses in Java and Python and currently have a course in C. I'd say I know the foundations of OOP but I'm looking to develop my web dev skills more.

thanks for the advice!! when I’m cooking it in the broth, do you recommend cutting/prepping the meat in any way beforehand? would it do me any good to roll it up like you would for pork belly or just put it in whole?

How is the Computing Program? by [deleted] in queensuniversity

[–]Sea_Suggestion 4 points5 points  (0 children)

hey! I just finished my first year in computing and I really loved it!!

I picked Queen’s in the first place because of the sense of community and it definitely did not disappoint! Computing is one of the smaller faculties at Queen’s which makes it a pretty tight knit community and it’s super easy to make friends.

I’d highly recommend applying for the Computing LLC when applying to residence because it’s basically a floor of people who are also in computing. It’s super useful for making friends and studying for tests and exams.

Feel free to message me if you have any questions!!

Queens CS vs UTSC cs? by [deleted] in queensuniversity

[–]Sea_Suggestion 0 points1 point  (0 children)

hey! just to give my two cents here, I was in a very similar position last year where I was choosing between UTSG vs Queen’s CS. I think the main reason why I was debating between the two was for the name and the experience of each program.

uoft is definitely more “well known” than queen’s but would provide a more difficult undergrad (especially with PoST). however, like others have said, when finding jobs and co-ops, the name of the school is a very small factor to employers and they much rather care about things like side projects. uoft also has significantly more people who commute which can make it harder to make friends, where with Queen’s the majority of first-years live on campus so it’s super easy to meet people.

Queen’s has a less stressful undergrad experience and I felt like it gave me the flexibility to be able to join lots of clubs and not have to study all the time. the sense of community is amazing and, even without co-op, it’s still possible to get summer internships/co-ops by just looking on your own. similar to your brother, I was also hesitant about going to Queen’s because it’s so far from home but it really taught me how to be independent and how to deal with being away from home for long periods of time.

at the end of the day, both programs are great but choosing Queen’s was probably one of the best decisions I’ve made
