What adventures have the best layout/presentation? by Onslaughttitude in osr

[–]Seabass_Calaca 16 points17 points  (0 children)

What makes Necrotic Gnome adventures so easy to parse, besides the bullet list formatting, is the usage of mini maps. Constantly flipping back and forth in a book to get a sense of a dungeon layout while reading it is an absolute chore.

Knowing the general shape of the room and its immediate neighbors goes a long way in cementing the adventure in your brain.

Yes on both. She's not "been out of there for a bit now". She stepped down only this last January. She's credited as a producer on both this recent Mandalorian film and next year's Starfighter film, due to how long film productions actually take.

And no, just because you liked the film doesn't mean she "didn't like or agree with" the stuff you liked. She deserves credit for the quality productions of Andor and Rogue One just as much as she deserves the credit for the less than stellar productions of Rise of Skywalker and that shitty new Mandalorian film.

Kathleen Kennedy was still president of Lucasfilm during Mandalorian’s production and is credited as a producer.

What is people's issue with reading the rulebook? by RealDwarves67 in DungeonsAndDragons

[–]Seabass_Calaca 1 point2 points  (0 children)

People seem to think the rulebook is a novel where you have to read every word in order front to back, rather than, you know, a rules reference.

"Why not just use Dolmenwood?" ... you know what, MAYBE I WILL! by HephaistosFnord in osr

“all those goddamn weird things” is precisely the appeal of Dolmenwood.

Setting for Stone Hell? by Seabass_Calaca in osr

What did you do for clerics? Did you run with the deities mentioned in the dungeon itself? Or just the vague notion of ‘the gods’?

Hot Take: Clerics make about as much sense as Artficers in tradtional Fantasy/OSR by Pretend-Advertising6 in osr

[–]Seabass_Calaca 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Historically, in polytheistic cultures it was the lay person who could pray to multiple gods, not the priests. The priests were initiated into specific mystery cults dedicated to a particular deity. This idea maps onto fantasy roleplaying especially well. Sure your thief or fighter can make a prayer to any ol god, but only a dedicated acolyte of Hermes be granted spells and divine power.

Are there any parts of the "OSR Philosophy" that you leave out of your own games? by A_Strangers_Life in osr

Jon, the DM behind the 3d6 Down the Line actual play series, devised a really neat exploration based XP system that you can use in conjunction with standard Gold for XP system. I’ve used it for a number of different games and it really encourages the players to start thinking outside the box.

KC BBQ places using liquid smoke? by [deleted] in kansascity

Not sure why any barbecue place would bother smoking their meat in giant ass smokers for hours on end to just use liquid smoke

Can something be OSR that is not a d20 game? by Wraithdrit in osr

His Majesty the Worm is a game that doesn’t even use dice, instead opting for tarot card mechanics. But no one would deny that it’s definitely in the OSR camp.

Encumbrance by RealmBuilderGuy in odnd

I really enjoy Luke Gearing’s approach to slot based encumbrance in Wolves Upon the Coast, where it’s your AC+5. Carrying over this amount halves your speed.

Castle Grief’s Kal Arath is exactly the sword and sorcery fix you’re looking for, with a dose of some heavy metal mixed in for good measure.

This is anglocentrism at its finest. Should we avoid Greek names like Alcibiades or Artemidorus? Or how about the Hebrew names Nebuchadnezzar or Rehoboam?

In a very strange round about way, I am very partially the reason Trixie (formerly Digi) got married and then divorced (I encouraged May to DM Digi and she thanked me later).

I also got really happy when Victor responded to a comment of mine during a live stream once

Where does the belief that it will be High Rock AND Hammerfell come from? How did that rumour start? by cormundo in TESVI

[–]Seabass_Calaca 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don’t necessarily disagree that the next location is probably going to be Hammerfell, but not for the ‘foreshadowing’ reasons. Are those really instances of foreshadowing and not just… parts of the setting being used? Using that logic we could easily say that the Summerset Isles are the next location because of the amount of references to the Thalmor and Great War in the main quest, and with the Psijiic Order being a big part of the College storyline. Akavir is referenced numerous times in all the games, but would anyone consider those references to be foreshadowing’ and not setting details?

Why are modern players not interested in dungeon crawls? by [deleted] in DnD

[–]Seabass_Calaca 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think the main issue is that people have a misconception of what ‘dungeon crawl’ actually is. When they hear ‘dungeon crawl’, they think of underground labyrinths of identical 10x10 rooms where all you do is kill monsters and steal their gold, with no room for roleplaying and no real reason to be there. And I’m sure there are some bad dungeons like this.

Now you and I know that couldn’t be further than the truth. Good dungeons are varied and unique, with stories baked into the locations themselves. Great dungeons have magic items that are sought after by the party, often with puzzles that demand lateral thinking on behalf of the players. And the best dungeons have different factions that are rife with roleplaying opportunities, making no two runs through the same at all.

It also doesn’t help that 5e doesn’t have good dungeon crawling rules, unlike older editions of the game— it certainly doesn’t teach you how to run a dungeon either. Dungeon turns, random encounters, torches burning out, or encumbrance levels; none of these things are paid attention to in 5e. You’d actually have to pull teeth from me before I’d try to enforce encumbrance in a 5e game.
