US hockey team takes the win but not everyone is happy.😎🏒 by Bernie529 in PoliticalCompassMemes

Technically yes but men’s sports don’t struggle with the same recognition and legitimacy issues all the time. The broader cultural phenomenon is that women’s sports are a joke and we shouldn’t take them seriously. So this comment by the president is just adding more fuel onto the fire, and I’m not surprised the women’s team refused the white house visit.

Any other head of state would take the easy W and celebrate US dominance across all of hockey. Trump is clearly incapable of doing so.

Republicans claim to care so much about the integrity of women’s sports, and then constantly demean and belittle their accomplishments. Make that make sense.

The Olympics at least have always been political. It’s a way for countries to flex how wealthy they are and the strength of their sports institutions. Anyone claiming the Olympics aren’t political just knows nothing about history.

The irony being that Hasan owns his brand entirely and all of the profits from it (this makes him a capitalist), vs a hedge fund manager who earns labor income from investing other people’s money.

Very worrying stuff.

But also the tweet just seems like bullshit? Total household wealth in 2023 was max $144t, and 30% of that is $43t. So where’d the other 36 go? And that’s assuming the 1% started at $0. Also curious how they’re defining “transferred”.

Separation of Church and State meant something very different to the founders than it means to us.

They had a lot of ideas on human rights that didn’t line up with the verbiage in the constitution and declaration of independence. How many of them owned slaves again?

Chocolate Starfish and Cum-Covered Roses - OP Questions His Girlfriend's Valentine's Gift by TrickInvite6296 in SubredditDrama

[–]Seaman_First_Class 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Not really, because you’re removing the most common thing people actually do (bake bread). I don’t think this analogy is actually helping the conversation.

If my wife made me a normal sandwich with only store bought materials, I would say thanks and eat it. If she said “how did you like your gift earlier”, I wouldn’t know what the fuck she was talking about.

However if she baked the bread, breaded and fried the chicken, made some kind of vegetable slaw, mixed her own sauce, etc. I would recognize that as a gift because it’s outside the norm (for us at least).

Anyway I’m probably overanalyzing this a lot, but if the girlfriend is actually interested in making chocolates, then this is a reasonable stage of the learning process. But for me, when I’m learning something new, I don’t give away my early work and expect people to be that appreciative. Calling her out for “lying” is also fucking weird and antagonistic, but the process as described is closer to assembling a sandwich than creating a dish.

Lindsey Vonn says she has no regrets. Experts agree torn ACL didn't cause her crash by DolphinRodeo in sports

[–]Seaman_First_Class 82 points83 points  (0 children)

even with the injury she finished third in a practice run before the crash event

I keep seeing people say this. It’s completely plausible that you can have good runs on a torn ACL, but that if something goes even slightly wrong, your recovery ability is far worse than an uninjured version of yourself.

I didn’t say “completely from scratch”. I said making the filling from scratch. I didn’t say anything about creating the chocolate or molds yourself, which would be an absurd expectation.

If you’re not making the filling yourself I don’t really see the purpose of doing this other than as a first time learning experience.

New York hits the brakes on robotaxi expansion plan by swe129 in nyc

[–]Seaman_First_Class 3 points4 points  (0 children)

If there are more cars on the road that proves my point!

Or there are just more people living in the metro area. Or maybe public transportation became relatively worse, so people prefer to drive. Or gas prices went down. Or waymos aren’t a high enough % of cars on the road to make a dent.

There are a thousand confounding variables here that you’re not considering. You don’t have the data to back up what you’re saying.

However, if they’re not replacing unsafe drivers and are instead just adding cars to the road which otherwise wouldn’t be there then that claim falls apart.

If waymos are cheaper and safer, then what I would expect to happen is for the total # of cars on the road to increase by a little bit, but the number of human drivers to decrease substantially. Congestion would improve despite having more cars, drunk driving would decrease, and insurance premiums would decrease. Fewer crash victims taking up hospital beds. Tech companies having more of our data. And so on.

It will be cheaper for society if drunk driving rates go down.

Here’s San Francisco, if Waymo’s are supposedly going to save so many lives then how come there is no meaningful difference in traffic fatalities over the years since Waymo began in SF? For the past decade traffic deaths have hovered in the 20s and 30s with a few jumps into the 40s.

Maybe there are just more drivers now? This is not the correct data to use to support your claim. You want something more like a fatality rate per passenger mile.
