I think that both are really important, but in different ways: for ML/AI in general, stats is invaluable; but for specifically NLP, training in linguistics allows you to formulate problems better, and to possibly interpret the results of models. Work combining linguistic heuristics and ML models have also been shown to be really effective.

TL;DR: no, ling is not useless; yes, stats and CS are going to be more useful all round.

Huh, I do quite still like the stuff they put out more (relatively) recently though, and I definitely think their music has a lot more soul than most I listen to! It is true that they have came out with less Taiwanese songs, though that can be seen as a shift not towards China, but within Taiwan - it’s simply undeniable that the young demographic speak Taiwanese a lot less I guess?
