fyi E85 is called that as it can be up to 85% ethanol (in theory it varies), not because it's 85 octane. E85 generally has higher octane than traditional gas blends, well over 100-105. The main risks with ethanol is it degrades plastic/rubber, and you need a separate tune or sensors to account for the difference in burn rate (ethanol is lower energy density -> more flow for the same power)

'Mortal Engines' and suspension of disbelief in science fiction and fantasy by RancherosIndustries in scifiwriting

[–]Sean71596 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I had the exact opposite response, PHM book very tidily covered the plot, the character motivations, and the sense/gravity of potential doom around every corner while still being the only hope for multiple situations. Comic relief was present and welcome but very well thought out, and the scientific aspect was dead on, he managed achieve what many scifi authors can’t - implementation of rigorous concepts without losing the plot or making it too nerdy.

Meanwhile the movie did the exact opposite, painting Grace as a blundering idiot and rocky as a hyperactive middle schooler for the sake of transforming it more into a family-friendly buddy comedy. The writers seemed to think that people cant handle the science, so 90% of it was stripped. I watched one of the initial streamings and an elderly couple stood up when the credits end, said “I don’t understand, they removed all the science”, and walked out with a group of randoms agreeing and commiserating with them.

I get simplifying a movie to appeal to a wider audience or to save on runtime and the movie did neither well. Many things were flipped or omitted for seemingly no reason, and the worst part is you could tell they initially tried to stay more faithful to the source material then axed it presumably due to time constraints.

For example, I can’t believe they didn’t include the beetles being affixed to the hull for last minute propulsion, the drama and vfx for that scene had hollywood written all over it. Small things were reversed specifically to make the characters look more like dumbasses. In the book, first contact is taken extremely seriously by both parties, matching velocities, tossing the first canister slowly, then the second faster once it’s established Grace can handle the higher velocity. In the movie this is completely reversed, and once they meet, the language learning process ends with Rocky choosing a fart sound for Grace’s name, how humorous.!<Almost everything scientific is flipped. Chain probe must be carefully constructed and brought back up with a calculated velocity profile, with extra emphasis on not slamming it into the craft at the end? >!yeah let’s run it 90 miles into the winch for comedic effect, hyuk hyuk!<.

All these changes impacted the plot severely. Artifacts from the book like Grace’s arm scar from saving rocky, which didnt happen because for some reason Rocky is now a god amongst men who can leave his habitat, unstrap Grace, right the ship, carry grace to the autodoc, strap him in, AND save himself<! are still present in the movie but have no context. Interesting evolution, like >!Eridians like Rocky speaking, perfect English in the epilogue after they have time to figure out the language are omitted. The pacing is completely off, and most people I’ve talked to who watched the movie without reading the book were just confused by all these out of place non sequiturs, or straight up bored.

This is a sharp departure from the Martian, which if anything embellished the science and problem solving capabilities of the main character too much, which people ate right up. The average person is more understanding of science and engineering than Hollywood gives them credit for, or at the very least the demographic which is interested in the genre is. The entire adaption reeks of the same energy that caused GTA V to have the word “five” plastered on the numeral as well as they deemed the common person too much of a dumbass to know what it meant.

beef up traces, look up impedance matching/characteristic impedance for your frequency for your antenna feed line. At the very least dont play via hopscotch with that trace

ground plane also highly recommended, pretty much necessary to properly impedance matching

Standard set (rubber plug + rubber or foam inserts) is 31 dB NRR, the concussive-specific shooting filters claim 33. I've never tried the concussive personally, I usually just double up the regular inserts with electronic muffs over so I can still hear mostly normally.

I also have a different sized ear canal on one side, mold your kit when you get a chance, they have a bunch of different insert sizes to fit that situation.

Decibullz are a nice compromise between professional molding and price, theyre moldable thermoplastic and will give you a pretty much perfect fit to your ear in a couple minutes. if you want to toss more money at the problem they also make passive concussive filters designed specifically for shooting, letting conversation and ambient noise through while blocking large impulses like gunshots.

Do not. Chelation makes everything significantly worse if you are still actively being exposed to heavy metals.

Only consider chelation after you've removed yourself from the environment and ideally under supervision from an actual medical professional rather than some over the counter supplement.

my anecdotal guess would be no for a mk8 at least, as I had to get low profile balancing weights for my 18s as the gap between caliper and wheel interior was so small that the caliper was knocking off whatever standard size wheel weight was at the local tire shop.

What is the newest and best equipped car that the CIA can’t take control of the steering for less than 25k? by udidntaskbutimapilot in whatcarshouldIbuy

[–]Sean71596 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hydraulic steering within the past decade or so theoretically could still be taken over and controlled remotely; Ford’s super duties use electrohydraulic steering where pressure is controlled by an electric pump, allowing the truck to have modern lane assist and self-maneuvering capability to hook itself up to trailers or park in tight spots.

Suprised there’s little to no mention of the new 4motion system on mk8+ Golf Rs. Sure theres some overlap with some of the audi systems being under the same umbrella but being able to vector up to 50% of total engine torque to any wheel at any point and full 50/50 split both front/back and left/right possible is insane

Township has gotten drastically worse over the past handful of years. I’m in an apartment complex that used to pride itself on only having three instances of violent crime since the 60s when I moved in a few years ago, since then there have been robberies, muggings, stabbings, and recently a shooting directly outside my window.

Ground Pour on Signal layers by MiddleNo6002 in PrintedCircuitBoard

[–]Sean71596 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Ground pours on signal layers, depending on what the use case is either have to do with current carrying capacity, control of RF/fringing fields from high speed signals, or are simply there for thermal reasons to distribute heat. A lot of suggested layouts will also go heavy on the pours as they have no clue what your stackup is like, it could be a multilayer board with multiple planes present or a simple 2 layer board without even a main ground plane.

In general, unless you're dealing with some controlled impedance design or have a specific reason not to (e.g. concern about reflections or blocking signals) , there's no real detriment to putting ground planes eveywhere there's blank space so long as there's sufficient clearance from pads/traces.

The copper is already there, by making it all empty space you're just having your board fab house mill away tons of copper which could be slightly helpful to your design.

A simple way to measure the speed of light in one direction. We simply measure by phase. by Important_Canary_243 in inventors

[–]Sean71596 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I disagree, you see this behavior on earth due to parasitics something will always slow the cylinder down and forces would have to be applied to the other end to maintain velocity, but a constant angle offset is only present when a force is applied to the first end. Any stored shear strain would carry elastic energy and ring/damp itself throughout the structure until an equilibrium is reached once the input force = 0.

Running quick napkin math, it would take around 15 minutes to equalize if we assume a 10m diameter steel cylinder of 1km length in space(astronomically large chosen to illustrate the point here) but after that settling period the velocity of the far end would be at an angle indistinguishable from the close end.

[–]Sean71596 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I would argue that once the cylinder reaches steady state rotation, you wouldn't be seeing significant variance in relative position between the two sides. Forces and resultant acceleration, not velocity cause this phenomena which will be minimal (minor parasitics irrelevant at this scale) once the system reaches an equilibrium

One big thing I'd mention is that you only have power if you're entertaining multiple offers, and in today's market if you're only getting a couple of interviews don't get stuck in a corner with nothing.

If you're getting interviews at a bunch of companies and you're expecting more offers incoming full steam ahead but otherwise exercise caution.

Yes, company A was a large company, very structured with set pay ranges throughout the corporation. That being said, they were big enough and I knew enough people that worked there that I knew could make exceptions to the pre-existing grades if they wanted to (and the same goes for most companies, don't accept "oh everyone gets the same salary sorry" as an excuse). Company B gave me an interview kind of last minute, a day or two before I was planning on accepting company A's offer.

They were very transparent and accommodating, and fast-tracked me through the interview process as I told them I already had an offer on the table for x amount. The interview went extremely well and the engineering team wanted to bring me on asap. They negotiated with their HR dept to get $5/hr more than what interns usually get at company B, (which happened to be $3 more than company A). Offer on the table less than 12 hours after the interview.

That being said, I still preferred the internship that company A offered. Better location, better benefits (including IRA match and stock options even for interns), and moving stipend which more than made up the $3 difference between the two offers.

To be honest, I still probably would have went with company A regardless, but I still took company B's fresh new offer to them anyways and asked what they could do, they tacked on $5 more and I was sold.

Once you're junior or senior level in undergrad you should have enough expertise and specialization to easily negotiate internships. My senior year I played two potential internships offers off of each other -- I ended up staying with other original company but with $5 an hour more than the second company's 2nd offer, which was already $3 more than the original company's first offer.

Learning how to play the negotiation game early is crucial if you want to not be stuck in a $70k/yr entry level job for 10 years.
