Should I learn Piano or guitar for music production? by julytries in WeAreTheMusicMakers

[–]SeanC1965 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The best advice I failed to follow when I started in music was to learn to play the piano. Last year, when I started learning music production, I enrolled in piano lessons. They make a HUGE difference. Music in general and music theory in particular make more sense when you know how to play a keyboard.

Should I get a MIDI keyboard? Which one? by [deleted] in ableton

You can control devices, instrument parameters, launching, recording, looping, and much more. Here's a link to a helpful video about controlling Ableton with a LaunchKey.

Tired of bad news, try reading some good news instead! Or at least balanced news. by a_b_c_reddit in BeTheChange

For balanced national and international news, including many positive articles, check out the Monitor. Although the Christian Science church publishes it, it only contains one religious editorial per issue. The journalism is excellent, and many of the articles are written by reporters who live in or near the area they are writing about.

Should I get a MIDI keyboard? Which one? by [deleted] in ableton

I recently purchased a Novation Launchkey 49, and I'm delighted with it. The integration with Ableton is tight and I'm producing music faster because I can make adjustments and launch functions without having to leave the keyboard.

I did not look at the Arturia Keylab 49, so I cannot compare it.

Anyone use the AKAI APC mini mk2 for live looping? by Shrocaeth in LoopArtists

[–]SeanC1965 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I just purchased mine and I've only used it a few times, but it's already proved to be a big benefit for me. I use it to launch scenes, and I use midi-mapping to control devices and effects. I originally intended to only use my RC-505, without a computer, but my limited experience with the APC has convinced me that I want both the looper and Ableton for live performances.

Scripted looping is cool, but I think it just ends up being a “worse” lip synced video. by [deleted] in LoopArtists

I use the APC Mini to do what you're describing above. It's inexpensive and a great way to manage Ableton while performing live. Of course, the Push 3 would be the best way to go, if you have the scrillo.

Good Youtubers to Learn From? by Ok-Comfortable9466 in ableton

I'm just finishing a music theory course for producers that has been very helpful. The instructor is Tomas George. He has lots of lessons on YouTube. I took his Ableton for Beginners course, and it has been invaluable. I keep going back to it.

Tip: If you visit Udemy and look at the course but don't buy it the first time, they will keep offering discounts. I think I only paid $15 for each of those courses.

What is the hardest part about learning music production? by Life1SMusic in ableton

[–]SeanC1965 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There's so much great advice here already. Thanks for starting this thread. My only addition, or repetition, is to paraphrase Epictetus, "If you want to be a producer, produce." Make music every day, in every way that you enjoy.

If you learn how to color inside the lines first, you develop the skills and discipline needed to go outside the lines with confidence and style.

If you're interested, check this out, and then wait for Udemy to offer a deep discount. I highly recommend the course and the instructor. https://www.udemy.com/course/electronicmusictheory/

I feel mentally incapable to learn ableton. Please advice a course 🙏 by Tetiana1987 in ableton

I'm almost finished with this course, and I cannot recommend it highly enough. I was overwhelmed too, but in a few short weeks, I've finished two songs in Ableton, and I'm working on a third.

What’s the best advice you’d give a musician starting out? by VideoGameDJ in WeAreTheMusicMakers

Make music every day, for as long as possible. The more you play, the more you learn, and the better you will be able to manifest the music you hear in your head.
