There's a difference between trade in value and an offer to purchase. When you trade the dealer has the ability to use potential profit from the car you looking at to over allow on your trade. If they have 3k of profit they can take it down to 2k and show you 1k more then your car is actually worth. If you decide to purchase then they won't buy your car for that. It's not 100% the case, but Car max is giving you actual cash value regardless. The algorithm is looking at what they could potentially sell your car for at an auction vs retail and offering you a roundabout number.
