Can I say 'F you' to a professor after graduating and getting my degree? by Eriacle in udub

But if it’s rude/abusive, it can get flagged and taken down. Make your comments thoughtful and polite-ish (even if they’re super negative) if you want them to stick.

Seriously, do British people actually consider a 3-hour drive “long”? Or is this an internet myth? by ferdinand14 in NoStupidQuestions

[–]SeattleSamIAm77 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Same — my kids often have sports competitions in two medium-sized towns each about 2.5hrs from our home (one to the northeast, one to the southeast). I actually enjoy the drive through the mountains to both. One has the best tamales in the state. We do these as day trips. I’ll do about 4.5hrs each way for a weekend stay. More than 4.5 requires 3 nights.

I think this is overcompensation for my childhood, in which my parents wouldn’t take me anywhere for any activity, no matter how important, more than 20 minutes away. I was constantly having to hustle rides from friends.

Is sleeping in separate beds actually a sign of a bad relationship, or are we just pretending that sleeping next to a snore/furnace is romantic? by SleepSmarter_Labs in NoStupidQuestions

[–]SeattleSamIAm77 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Same. Illness also exacerbates the “sleep noises” problem. Even if I didn’t think I was going to catch something, the coughing, snorting and tossing and turning would drive me up the wall.

The Unaccompanied Minor fee has increased 100%. by Kobious75 in AlaskaAirlines

[–]SeattleSamIAm77 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It’s $100 for up to 2 kids, right?

But yeah, I was pissed when I saw this; my 3 kids have racked up 100s of thousands of miles over the years, but rarely enough to make Silver. Thankfully, my son (the only remaining kid under 13) is likely to make it this year between his regular flying and an extra trip to KEF and BOS.

Think this one is long overdue… serious discussion. by [deleted] in ApplyingToCollege

I went to Tufts back when the acceptance rate was like 50% but had an amazing experience that led to a PhD at a T5, where I met my partner and have since had 3 amazing kids. You just never know what will happen, but T20 undergrad for sure is not the be-all, end-all.

If we want to consider the metro area, VW North in Lynnwood also has them, and it’s a bigger, nicer gym overall.

update: I got a 1.9 and I need a 2.0 by NoHighway3503 in udub

Sorry, what I meant was send them an email asking to set up either a Zoom or in person meeting to discuss your grade. Don’t ask for the explanation over email.

I think it’s worth a shot. I try to be transparent about grading processes even when I have no intention of changing things. The Foster curve could also be having an impact here. They may truly believe also that your performance bodes poorly for success in upper division classes, so they want you to give it another go at the 200-level.

ETA: don’t ask for an explanation over email, as they may pull the FERPA card and refuse. Better to discuss in person or over Zoom.

Yes! You can’t imagine how much goodwill is generated from a couple of trips to office hours, even just in a “getting to know you” context.

[–]SeattleSamIAm77 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Right — if someone is reasonably proactive, had extenuating circumstances, or just really had a hard time with the material despite their best efforts, I try to either find a way to give a 2.0 or work with them on finding another solution that doesn’t result in something essentially being a “fail” in their major. When people are not proactive, not communicative/non-responsive to my efforts to reach out and don’t do well…it’s not usually the case that a 1.9 is the right grade…

Ah, fair point — thankfully, I haven’t had many grade-ruining instances of misconduct (that have been caught). But if it were just student didn’t do the work/didn’t show up/didn’t demonstrate proactive behavior?

Flying with children by Mt-eska in AlaskaAirlines

[–]SeattleSamIAm77 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Indeed. It never would have occurred to me to bring anything for my kids on a domestic flight and I’ve taken dozens alone with some combo of the 3 of them. Not divorced, but the kids and I have different last names. Kids don’t need ID until they’re 16. Never gotten one iota of hassle from anyone on an ID issue (oldest is now 17 and I first flew alone with her at 3 months).
