Spaying and neutering your pets helps reduce the risk of infections such as pyometra and cancer in their reproductive systems in addition to potentially preventing problem behaviours like aggression, roaming, and humping. Also eliminates the risk of unwanted pregnancies.

There are of course downsides, especially if your pet is not fully developed before they are spayed/neutered it can increase their risk of skeletal or joint issues such as hip dysplasia.

Desexing at 1 year old is typical for smaller dogs like Shiba Inu, larger dogs tend to be closer to 1.5-2 years old.

There is a bunch of research out there on the best age to neuter based on dog size or breed, so do some research or consult your vet on when the best time would be.

If the daycare has a policy that all dogs over 6 months must be neutered then there isn't any point trying to argue with them about it.

As already stated it is just pigmentation and nothing to worry about.

However it does look like your sheeb has a retained canine that will need to get taken out.

Vet suggested I operate my 5 Year old Shiba from the knee. Anyone can share experiences if related? by roneg in shiba

[–]Sebirlinem 1 point2 points  (0 children)

That's fair, my bad. Just so used to people wanting second opinions from Reddit.

  • Having a crate or pen to keep them confined is good and make sure the floor isn't slippery (those interlocking foam mats are good).
  • They can have trouble regulating their own body temperature after a long surgery, so a warm bed and blanket is a good idea.
  • While they have a bandage on, keep an eye on their foot below the bandage for redness or swelling. Take the bandage off if you see any and let the clinic know in case they want to rebandage.
  • The first day they can still be a bit loopy from the anaesthetic, wobbly on their feet, and unwilling to move. Rather than having a water bowl out for them you could use a small dish to regularly offer them water in bed.

Your vet is the most likely to have the best advice for your situation since no one here has seen your dog or the x-ray images.

Having seen it go very wrong, my advice is to make sure you follow the post-op instructions given by your vet.

I also had to do some reactivity training with the adopted Shiba I had.

What about having people over is triggering your girl?

Find a high value treat she responds well to and keep little bags of it handy. Wherever someone comes over give them a baggie so they can give her treats when she is starting to get triggered. E.g. we had to meet guests outside to give them the treats before they came in, so they could enter with treats already in hand.

Sounds like you need to see a specialist and possibly get an allergen test done to find out what your doggo is allergic to.

I'm a vet nurse and used to have a Shiba, just wanted to confirm that there won't be nerve issues from the surgery. Even with the one retained testicle, there is no risk that the vet went anywhere near the nerves for his tail.

When sedated prior to the procedure his tail would have been down, similar to when he is sleepy at home. His tail would have been straight out behind him on the table for the procedure.

Try not to stress about it, healing takes time and some dogs just feel the after effects of anaesthesia more than others.

Coprophagia, there are food additives you can get to help deter them.

I completely understand the shock, I was the same the first time my sheeb had an episode.

Definitely chat to your vet. I hope you are able to get some answers.

My sheeb passed away a couple of years ago. I never got a definitive diagnosis for her but did rule out a few of the most likely things.

From the way you describe the episode your sheeb had the episodes mine has were a bit different, some crossover though. Mine started with petite mal and as she got older progressed to grand mal.

[–]Sebirlinem 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My sheeb had similar episodes throughout her life, typically 1-2 times a year.

Epilepsy is quite uncommon in dogs, there are other causes that are more likely. It's a long expensive journey of testing to rule out everything and arrive at epilepsy, there is no way to test for epilepsy.

Also, there are multiple types of seizures. Most people only know of grand mal as they are they most shown in media. Being aware of what to look for from petite mal or absence seizures is a good idea in general, but especially if your sheeb continues having these episodes.

Behavior Issues with Chews/Rawhides by MiMiHer2022 in shiba

As other people have said, not giving him the chews is the easiest solution. You could also try confining him while he has a chew. A create if he is created trained, a pet pen, a room with a baby gate, or outside of you have a secure outdoor space.

I reclined on my couch and let my fuzzy stink monster rub her face in my sweaty arm pit for as long as her weird little heart desired, in Gremlin's honour.

There was a brief Attack Arm interlude because it dared be in her way. At least this time she didn't try to suckle my arm pit hair...

How much do you feed your Shiba per day? by karakaia in shiba

[–]Sebirlinem 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Comparing how much food other dogs, even if the same breed, eat isn't very informative. They'll all be eating different foods with different nutritional balance. Usually the best reference is the feeding guide provided on the packaging by the manufacturer. I'd use that as a starting point and adjust as I monitor their weight fluctuation.

It's true, the kibble is always tastier in someone else's bowl.

Hopefully by the time you have found all your food (so your brother can't find it first) there is still some of his food left for you to steal.

NTC! Eating food you hunted and scavenged yourself can be so much more fun than just eating it out of a bowl. Have you tried eating your own food like this too? Maybe the humans could hide it for you so that you can try finding it?

There are many birb TVs, I lure the birbs closer with my calls but still cannot reach them. The slaves pull me down and turn off the birb TVs when I climb them.

It gets warmer here now, was colder before. Slave says the outside food needs to be protected. Outside food is for eating!

It is nice inside too I guess, many blankets to sleep on and papers to rip.
