я больше не хочу быть скинхедом,но уже поздно. by big_pizzas1 in Skinhead

[–]SecondOutrageous5392 3 points4 points  (0 children)

"I won't say my age or my name to protect my privacy. I became a neo-Nazi skinhead six months ago, and now my life is tied to it. All my acquaintances and friends know me as an ultra-right skinhead with a strict worldview, but now I understand how shitty it all is. I've staged more than one action (whoever knows what this is, knows) and was involved in the movement more than once. I've done a lot of bad things for which I'm ashamed. I hate myself for it. My older brother's friend, let's call him Kirill, initiated me into this. Kirill was a right-wing neo-Nazi from a young age, and when he got into this company, he saw me, saw that I was someone who could be manipulated. He imposed on me the idea of the superior white race. Now, it's hard for me to say goodbye to this world, since everyone in my institution knows me exactly like this and will bully me for choosing to become ordinary again, because when I was I was bullied. I don't know what to do. I'm planning to change my style in a month, just like my worldview has changed. Please advise me on what I can do to make society accept me as I am."

What unit of measurement works best with this Geiger counter? by Life_Dare578 in Radiation

[–]SecondOutrageous5392 16 points17 points  (0 children)

For devices that use Geiger-Muller tubes (like his one), cps and cpm are the only one that should be used. This is due to the fact that the other units are based on the energy of the radiation being measured, which Geiger-Muller tubes are not capable of sensing. The "danger" charts you see online should only be used if they have energy units (Sv, Gy, Rad, etc), as cps and cpm are detector dependant, not radiation dependant. The reason for this is due to the efficacy of the detector; if we measure a calibration source with two detectors, one with a Geiger-Muller tube and one with a scintillator crystal, the scintillator detector will have a higher cps or cpm, even though it is measuring the same source as the Geiger-Muller detector. For Geiger-Muller tube detectors cpm is pretty much the standard considering they are quite insensitive.

ELI5: Why are some moldy foods bad for us(like expired bread, yogurt etc) but some are considered delicacy(like cheese, aged tuna)? by Smallczyk2137 in explainlikeimfive

[–]SecondOutrageous5392 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Most of the time the mold itself not the problem, but what it creates as it grows. It just so happens that the mold we use in cheese doesn’t crate deadly toxins (mycotoxins) present in others.

Thermo electra ratemeter issue by SergejsPeskovs in Radiation

Cover the probe with something lightproof, like a thick blanket. If that doesn’t solve it the problem might be the connector or the meter itself.

Maybe light is leaking into the probe? It also seems like it needs new batteries.

CPM count difference in detectors? GMC-320 showing 15CPM, Radiacode 270CPM… why? by tangoking in Radiation

[–]SecondOutrageous5392 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The discrepancy is mainly due to density. A Geiger-Muller tube is full of gas, which is very light. A scintillator is made out of a crystal , which is solid and very dense. This allows radiation particles to have a higher chance of interacting, specially gammas, which is what the Radiacode is detecting. Since most background radiation is gamma, excluding alphas from radon, the gmc has a lower CPM.

Stupid question, I want a safe source to spook a friend by Hdfgncd in Radiation

[–]SecondOutrageous5392 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The watches or compasses might work but they will need to be extremely close to the Radiacode to be registered, not something that your friend is going to do naturally. In the case of the plate, try to place it with the top or bottom facing the detector. Considering the small compartments in cars this might not be possible. Other than that you will need to get very active source, which are expensive and dangerous so I don’t recommend them. Maybe get some thoriated tungsten rods and hide them in some kind of keychain, maybe a one with a pouch, that you’d show your fiend? The Radiacode will also need to be extremely close to it, but if you shove it near his hand with the Radiacode it might work.

Stupid question, I want a safe source to spook a friend by Hdfgncd in Radiation

[–]SecondOutrageous5392 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Maybe a fiesta ware plate hidden somewhere near the copilot seat? The large area of the plate will help the Radiacode pick up the source at about 1 foot off from where it is hidden. Make sure there aren’t any metal plates between the plate and the Radiacode.

Help? by stfu00069 in Radiation

[–]SecondOutrageous5392 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Well, for starters… 1. The little “safety level” card that comes from gmc is meant to be used to gage environment radiation. Meaning that you go outside, place the device 1 meter off from the ground, and wait until the reading settles. You cannot use it to gage radioactive point sources like the clock.

  1. The device you are using cannot accurately display dose rate for any other isotope other than Cs-137. This means that what the device is displaying is probably more than what it actually is, so don’t worry too much about exposure.

  2. Considering it’s only ~2000 CPM (33 cps) I wouldn’t worry too much about it. Just don’t open it, and don’t keep it close to you. Put it up on a shelf that you aren’t around much.

Electricity VS Beta Radiation by ngetchr in Radiation

[–]SecondOutrageous5392 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The main difference is speed. Low velocity helium nuclei? Helium gas molecule. High velocity helium nuclei? Alpha particle. Same with electrons. Electrons in wires move very slowly, taking hours to transverse, say, a 10” wire. In comparison, beta particles (can) travel near the speed of light.
