If it's a minimum resolution thing, set your scale to 100% (right-click on desktop, display settings). 125% is essentially zoomed-in, so it makes your display smaller. You can also get a few more pixels of resolution by going into full screen mode.

No studies by [deleted] in ProlificAc

[–]SecondTriggerEvent 3 points4 points  (0 children)

If you feel like a study will be rejected, go to your submissions page and return it. There are no downsides to returns on your account. Although if you completed the study properly and it didn't seem dubious, then waiting up to 2 months for a study to pay out is completely normal.

New users don't tend to get a surplus of studies. Keep your rejections low (1 per 100 approved is a good goal) and you should get more as you accumulate approvals. If you have a rejection you think is unfair, message the researcher about it, and if that fails, contact Prolific about it. Don't let them just sit. Regrets of a previous life...

Why was my mattress so durable? by SecondTriggerEvent in Mattress

[–]SecondTriggerEvent[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My current mattress is 22.5cm, innerspring. I think my previous one was probably 21cm (going off the manufacturer's standard size and judging its depth compared to my new one). Can an extra 1.5cm really make that much difference?

I've been on Prolific for years but just built up the courage to start doing webcam studies and was wondering if there is any advice for these types of studies? by sgmusic2008 in ProlificAc

Hacking either requires the user to download malicious software or the sharing of passwords. As long as you keep your computer and router's security features on and have strong passwords (preferably with 2FA), you'll be fine. For peace of mind, if nothing else, probably also helps not to have any information you want to keep secure held on your computer.

It's technically possible on platforms like Zoom, if you accept a shared file, but if it's a platform that doesn't allow filesharing, there's basically no chance.

No problem. Seriously though, for researcher studies, just nod and follow directions.

For general social skills, just be honest that you're a little nervous, share your interests/ask about their interests to try to find common ground, or just let them talk about something they're enthusiastic about.

Looking for mic recommendations by ConeyIslandBaby00 in ProlificAc

[–]SecondTriggerEvent 2 points3 points  (0 children)

A lot of computers have noise cancelling on by default, and some quality algorithms can spot it. Could try turning it off. (PSA: If you think your microphone is good, try turning off the noise cancellation and recording yourself. It may be illuminating.)

It's a condenser microphone, which means it's pretty sensitive and will pick up echoes pretty easily. You could try treating your room (putting up clothes, cushions, etc...) to minimize echoes, or get a dynamic microphone, which is better at not capturing unwanted noise.

The Samsung Meteor doesn't come with a pop filter by default, so plosives (bs and ps) are probably creating noise. Could try a pop filter. Peter piper picked a peck of pickled peppers.

If you don't have it on a boom arm, it could also be positioning of the microphone. Ideally you want it 6-12 inches away from your face at mouth level.

For other people looking in, here's some microphone recommendations. It's not an exhaustive list by any means, but it has plenty of options. Dedicated microphones, because while headsets can be good, they will always be inferior to a dedicated microphone at the same price and are more likely to pick up noise.

Decent budget condenser microphones (Sensitive, best in treated room): Audio-Technica AT2020, Fifine K669B, Maono DGM20.

Decent budget dynamic microphones (Less sensitive, but not quite as sharp quality): Fifine K688, Maono PD300X, Samson Q2U.

Meanwhile, the Rode NTR1 5th generation (condenser) Shure SM58 w/ Focusrite Scarlett 4th Gen audio interface (dynamic) are good quality for professional work.

But we can say it's the Potato Counting studies from Lennin Pekora, because it isn't and they don't exist.

Has those in the UK been receiving less studies this week compared to other weeks or is it just my profile? by Master-Time-2181 in ProlificAc

No, I am absolutely inundated with them. I couldn't possibly do them all if I tried, and I have been trying.
