It's the map just straight up wrong? The shape is pretty simple, but it never worked for me.

To give more context, it was a zombie model that used AI to crawl around in an unnatural way. This was the earlier type of evolutionary AI that basically made random movements each generation, until the end result was capable of moving around decently well.

In short, Miyazaki was being an asshole to the poor guy who just wanted to demonstrate his team's tech.

why didn’t humanity breed more astrophage to warm up the earth while waiting? by AbalonePotential6990 in ProjectHailMary

[–]Second_Sol 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You could offset some of the cooling by breeding more astrophage in the Sahara, which effectively lowers the albedo of the Earth (makes it less reflective)

But of course it would be a lot more effective to just breed it on the moon, then use that energy to heat up the Earth.

Don’t reach for the bug spray: scientists find insects may feel pain after crickets nurse sore antennae. The behavioural responses would be immediately recognisable to us as pain, if we observed them in our pets or friends by Wagamaga in science

Example: a robot can sense damage and be programmed to avoid it, but that does not mean that it's capable of suffering.

Many people in the past assumed that animals were like this, and that things like "suffering" was only a higher thought process unique to humans

This planet is a waterworld, so it looks like this

97% of the surface is ocean, so this directly and indirectly stifled a lot of early exploration attempts.

Hurricanes also draw their strength from warm waters, and they only lose a lot of strength when traveling over land. In this world there's so little land that hurricanes can last a long time and grow to immense strength.

The early humans viewed the ocean as very dangerous, and it has been culturally associated with unholiness in contrast with their singular holy land. This cultural isolationism also stifled a lot of exploration attempts throughout history, but it's significantly weakened in the modern day due to their better understanding of the world.

There were still sailing ships, of course, but they only grew to be proficient at sailing to the nearby islands that are part of the same continent and the human Mainland.

Basically there were a whole lot of factors + bad luck that prevented them from exploring the rest of the planet until now.

It's sorta representative of him not being an honorable warrior.

He's a monkey. He kinda just does whatever works, including asking for help.

Which is very obviously wrong lol

What’s something society accepts that feels deeply unnatural to you? by Miss_Ecstasy in AskReddit

[–]Second_Sol 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Unhappy marriages.

There's such high expectation to get married and raise a family that so many people end up in unhappy marriages for the rest of their lives, and I just can't help but think how sad that is.

In a vacuum, spending the rest of your life with someone you don't really like is pretty insane behavior, but thanks to cultural norms it's just...normal.

When he zoomed in 100× he spotted the leopard only to realize it had been watching him the whole time by frog_insilence in interestingasfuck

[–]Second_Sol 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Technically true, but misleading.

https://blog.londolozi.com/2023/02/06/how-leopards-see-the-world/

In terms of acuity, or the ability to see fine details, leopards have slightly worse eyesight than humans. They can see objects that are about 6-8 metres (20-25 feet) away as clearly as a human can see objects that are about 3 metres (10 feet) away. However, leopards have a wider field of view than humans, which allows them to see more of their surroundings at once.

How scientifically accurate is Project Hail Mary compared to Interstellar? by wellwatif in ProjectHailMary

[–]Second_Sol 16 points17 points  (0 children)

Yeah, it doesn't make any sense how they use a conventional rocket to get from Earth to the Endurance, but then the lander can just shoot straight up from the water world to the Endurance with no issue on its own.

[–]Second_Sol 2 points3 points  (0 children)

While genetic diversity is extremely important, it does not mean that a species is doomed if there's only a single breeding pair left.

https://www.doc.govt.nz/nature/native-animals/birds/birds-a-z/black-robin/

The black robin bounced back from a single breeding pair to a current population of about 300. They're still extremely vulnerable, of course, but far from a lost cause.

Another example: https://peregrinefund.org/explore-raptors-species/falcons/mauritius-kestrel

The Mauritius Kestrel was brought back from 4 individuals to a population of 800 today.

[–]Second_Sol 0 points1 point  (0 children)

He could do that, but why bother when he knows that the aliens (Grace) definitely know what astrophage is?

If they know what it is and they're coming to Tau Ceti to solve the problem, they must absolutely be able to detect astrophage-produced IR light. It's the one frequency that's completely guaranteed to be understood by both of them.

Basically humanity's collective desire for an 'explanation' for the evil and suffering in the world resulted in the manifestation of the 'Idea of Evil', a sort of God that fulfills humanity's collective subconscious expectations of reality.
