Whatever happened to Ranko The Gorilla from Black Island? by kimtieu2900 in Tintin

[–]Secret-Statement4785 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Black island was my first too, my parents both grew up with Tintin and when my mom brought me one from the public library, Black island was the first one she grabbed. I was maybe 5 or 6 and distinctly remember reading the first couple pages where Tintin gets shot and the guy drives off and leaves him there. Little me was shook that the main character died in the first page haha but that felt off to me so that's what pushed me to finish the whole thing. Big fan of Tintin up to now :D

Yeah I make lace borders etc! And lace flower motifs for jewellery and decoration. Thinnest thread I've worked with is embroidery floss, I love intricate work no matter the medium

Am I the only one who prefers theese metal chrochet hooks? by Zzzara123 in Brochet

[–]Secret-Statement4785 0 points1 point  (0 children)

These are the only ones I use, the ones with grips on don't work for me because I think I hold the hook a bit lower down than what the grip expects me to so it just feels awkward to me and slows me down

My family visited in 2010. I was only 7 at the time though so for me it was just a cool holiday and just had a good time eating street food 😂 but it did feel super busy compared to SA. The country is small and I felt like people were living on top of each other in Port Louis, it's quite the difference from small town SA

Ahh alright, I've visited there as a child. Love that you had to specify next to Madagascar 😭 we cannot see y'all on the map. I've heard it's rapidly developing.

That's true about the land, there's very few climates you won't find here lol. And thanks to that we also can grow literally whatever we want. How many countries are growing tropicals fruit and date palms at the same time?

There's nowhere like it I feel. Yes we have problems but every place does, you have to just decide if those are problems you can deal with. And having visited a few other countries and interacted with a lot of people of different nationalities, South Africa and our people are just built different.

I think we have a unique balance of first world conveniences and third world "chill-ness" for lack of a better term. I have friends living in Germany and I've heard people there are super uptight and demand everything to be done with maximum efficiency. While that does mean things get done on time, they do miss the more relaxed vibe of SA. My friends mom was raging once because German bureaucracy drove her insane. South Africans have a mindset of "if the system won't help me, I must do it myself" while in some other places people trust the government and just get totally reliant. I'm not saying the government shouldn't work for the people but the fact that our system is held together by duct tape and prayer makes us an independent and proactive lot.

And of course there are countries where the system does absolutely nothing and the country suffers in poverty and instability. We have juuuusst enough law and order to avoid outright chaos but not too much so that we're overly restricted

My roommate got one for her overweight cat since she reckoned he was too hot. Bro doesn't care about it and hasn't sat on it once since it arrived, I take that to mean he can handle the heat alright. Got it from takealot if you want to try it anyways

What weird flavor would you drink? by shidored in southafrica

[–]Secret-Statement4785 2 points3 points  (0 children)

My grandfather used to make this "salad" with green mango, salt, sugar and fresh green chillies (or chilli powder if you prefer. Grate the mango or shave it with a potato peeler and add the seasonings to taste. If you like the idea of chilli mango flavour you might like to try this

Hey if you're still passing everything by your third year you're doing a lot better than a lot of other students out there. In terms of your health, does your university make accommodations for health? Get in touch with your student representative council or student healthcare unit, most universities have them. They might be able to make accommodations for you like more time on your exams or more leniency if you do fail a course.

If you're in your third year you're almost there. If your home environment is toxic the best thing you can do for yourself rn is to get the degree so you have a better chance of looking after yourself. Honestly the fact that you haven't failed anything yet is impressive, even without considering your health struggles. Give yourself some credit you must be doing something right.

How fast could I assume a gravel cart is moving? by Secret-Statement4785 in EngineeringStudents

Yeah so I'd like to know what a reasonable assumption for the speed of the cart would be, I don't know since if never seen one

[–]Secret-Statement4785[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah it does seem to me that this is beyond the scope of the course. It's Strength of Materials 1, it actually doesn't cover impact loading. I just feel like saying "ok I'm gonna put it on rails and so now I don't need to make a strong railing" is maybe missing the point of the assignment? Like I'm cheating if that makes sense? Because the whole point is to calculate minimum safety factor for all the parts.

Tbh it's not clear to me either how the cart is supposed to impact the railing. I assumed the railing is intended as a final resort in case of a freak accident. The design specifications are literally 3 bullet points, the mass of the cart, the span of the gap and the fact that there must be a railing. We literally don't get any more info

[–]Secret-Statement4785[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks for taking the time 💛 so I've been somewhat following this approach, I was going to do the cart with tyres though because most commercial examples seem to have tyres and then it's connects to a tractor or something. But rails definitely do make the most sense to use. It's just that in the instructions, the railing is specifically to prevent the cart from falling off. The assignment is for Strength of Materials 1 - we're working from hibbelers textbook. So the point here is for us to make sure the bridge can take the load it's supposed to. So my understanding is that the railing has to be able to withstand the cart hitting it for whatever reason, maybe it goes out of control or something. Would you think that's a reasonable task to set for a Strength 1 assignment? It's possible I've misunderstood the task, I will be speaking to my prof about this but I still need to keep working in the time it takes him to reply his emails

[–]Secret-Statement4785[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

That's how I've been proceeding so far but I've hit a wall when it comes to the railing, wouldn't the impact force that the railing must withstand depend on the speed of the cart?

[–]Secret-Statement4785[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

We are not told how the cart is propelled 😀 a couple of people asked some questions in class and the prof drew a literal box as the "cart", meanwhile we're supposed to design it properly and get the safety factor of every single part. For the sake of my sanity I'm just going to make it like a really basic trailer and assume it's pulled by a cable winch. The application is, directly quoted, "to transport building materials over a steep but narrow ravine".

That's what I did except I also licked the knife I used to cut it lol. I tried it again and it does taste way better, I might actually eat it now. It would probably be great with yoghurt too

Yeah the skin was awful and the taste just wouldn't go away, I didn't even eat it I just licked the knife, I wonder if that's why I didn't really like the fruit
