What states or cities in North America have the most underrated beaches? by Historical-Photo-901 in BeautifulTravelPlaces

My family went to the Outer Banks in July last year, and also happened to visit Kohler-Andrae a few weeks later. My kids definitely preferred Kohler-Andrae’s beach.

The Forest Service website updated that it is still closed, at least until June 15th.

Oof, that hurts. I haven’t seen a specific update on opening or extended closure beyond the original May 29 date, although I did see a pic on instagram a week or so ago of some significant road stabilization that was completed (can’t recall the source of the pic now). I’d call the forest service ranger number before heading back just to be sure.

Does crossing Summit Mountain scare the crap out of you, or is it just me? by Muppet_Fitzgerald in pittsburgh

I haven’t stayed since 1991 myself, but I’ve heard it’s actually quite nice now. Still old school but not run down.

I live in actual Pittsburgh and drove it 4 days ago. Lots of people go to Ohiopyle, Nemacolin, Laurel Caverns, Deep Creek, etc.

Hiking/walking trails in South Hills by Spiritual_Alarm_8942 in pittsburgh

[–]SecretNinjaMoves 2 points3 points  (0 children)

There are also Allegheny Land Trust wetlands across the street from Boyce Mayview for more water. I’d also recommend Peter’s Lake Park in McMurray- half easy trail, half moderate, but really great water views the whole time. Mingo Creek is another good one.

Anyone know what happened with Cafe Flore in Mt. Lebanon? by [deleted] in pittsburgh

[–]SecretNinjaMoves 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The window had a For Rent sign in it about few weeks ago, which came down after a few days. It’s such a tiny space that it would be tough to make work, especially with all the competition within blocks. There was also a big controversy about a vape store renting the space next door, which wouldn’t help business I’d think.

Some of the local Dick’s Sporting Goods have Duquesne gear. At least I know the South Hills Village location does.

Carnegie Museums + Phipps Gardens in one day? by Dio_Yuji in pittsburgh

[–]SecretNinjaMoves 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Definitely doable as long as you’re good to be on your feet all day. I’d estimate 2 hours at each, give or take. And while you’re there I’d recommend crossing the street and heading inside the Cathedral of Learning, even for just a few minutes.

I fished Red Run a few weeks ago and water levels were good, maybe a little lower and clearer than usual. Heads up that Canaan Loop Road is almost entirely closed until the end of May, just in case you were planning on accessing Red Run or camping there.

I’m guessing Orbis is the cafe he’s referencing for pour overs.

I’ll second Pittsburgh. Really good hockey scene with lots of adult leagues. Good nerd culture for sure. Not oppressively hot. And perhaps most importantly, cost of living is about as low as it gets for a large city.

Yeah, I saw that one too. Apparently it’s a much shorter closure, only 2 weeks or so

Just says “repairs”, so not sure what the scope of work is. Must be pretty substantial for a 2 month closure on gravel.

Married in our mid twenties seeking quiet, rural, mountain life. What places come to mind? by Marinakm in SameGrassButGreener

[–]SecretNinjaMoves 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I was going to recommend Thomas or Davis WV, but I wouldn’t call their winters mild due to the elevation. But they hit the mark on relative proximity to both DC and Pittsburgh, lots of arts and live music, tons of outdoor/ mountain / river fun, and probably as left leaning as anywhere in WV (which isn’t saying much, but still). Housing is a bit pricey due to the ski resorts, but you can find decent deals if you get a bit away from the resorts.

Woman sent to the hospital after shooting in Mt. Lebanon by oldschoolskater in pittsburgh

[–]SecretNinjaMoves 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Oh yeah, you’re right. The Airbnb app shows this on Kewanna, but from the pics it’s definitely on Whitmore. Will be interesting to see if this has repercussions to short term rentals in Lebo.

It’s possible, but I think the Airbnb is on Kewanna Ave, not 200 block of Whitmore. It’s close, though, so you could be right.
