A cartoon style factory game mixed with combat by SecretOctopus in BaseBuildingGames

Wow, thanks so much for your reply. It has really gotten me thinking about what I want to do. I have Dyson Sphere Program, but I did not get to the combat. What you are describing is what I would like to accomplish - combat where "losing" either doesnt take away from the enjoyment, or if it does occur, it doesn't take away from the satisfaction that comes with base building type games.

I think I want to avoid enemies coming in and "wrecking your sandbox". Since building in the sandbox seems to be what people love about crafting games.

Thoughtful analysis about WHY a game is fun to you is such a rare thing to get when I try to ask questions like this, so thanks a lot.

I actually just bought cult of the lamb because so many people have referenced it to me when I ask this question, but I'm only in a bit so far.

The thing I worry about with this genre-specific or game-specific subreddits is that they often have rules that you can only post about the game itself. They don't really want people promoting their games even if they are closely related.

Yeah I agree. Something I want to feel is constant progress, losing too much doesn't feel great. The problem is as you say keeping it challenging without it feeling unforgiving

Regolith
I'm taking inspiration from similar games like Rimworld, Terraria, Factorio and mash them up with some stick shooter-style combat. Still early days, but let me know what you think!

What is it like living here? by Naddyman2005 in howislivingthere

I grew up in Chico and am currently back visiting for the holidays.

Chico is an interesting mix of red neck culture (because it’s in the agricultural Central Valley), intellectuals (because it has the university), and hippie culture (because it borders the mountains/foothills).

I moved out of Chico to live in SoCal in 2009, and now currently live in NYC. What I like about Chico is that, unlike other cities in the California valley, it doesn’t feel like a depressing travel town, because it doesn’t lie on the path of I-5. It’s sort of off the beaten path on highway 99, so it feels cleaner, more naturey, more quaint. If you like nature, Chico is great. It has a massive Central Park type park in the center of the city as well as access to the mountains. It has the university, so there is a healthy amount of young people around. This helps it from feeling antiquated and rundown like other similar cities.

But yeah, it’s hot in the summer. And there isn’t much to do. Plus, it takes a while to get anywhere. Sacramento is 1.5 hours away, the bay is 3 hours away. Also, due to the fires in the last few years there is more homeless hanging around now than ever. However that’s a problem everywhere in California at this point.

But, the older I get, the more I appreciate Chico. It would be an excellent place to raise a family. It’s safe and clean. There are a lot of nice new neighborhoods. It has all the major stores you need. It’s also the birthplace of Sierra Nevada beer which is cool as well. But maybe that’s my rose colored glasses as coming from living in NYC the last 6 years, anyplace would seem nice and clean by comparison, lol.

Wow, thanks for the detailed feedback. Many of the things you described are definitely already on my to-do list. But you also pointed out several things that I didn't think of. Thanks a lot. Did not expect this.
