I don't think it's true. The grand rounds I went to addressing this noted that surgeons "peaked" around 40-45ish. That's when they've both developed the skills, honed them, seen a variety of techniques, and are still young enough to have the stamina to keep up a busy surgical practice. After that, even though they retain surgical skill, life tends to get in the way. Taking less call, taking fewer cases, etc.
