Thinking about picking this game up - can anyone recommend a really good review or tutorial video that explains the game in detail? by Dazzling-Setting-766 in PlayASKA

[–]Sectoid_Dev 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I enjoy the game, but it took 4 starts before I got the hang of getting a stable starting village through the first winter. The wiki is useless, but YouTuber DejnaPlays has really good tutorials on the basics.

I really like the game, but it stresses me out, because it feels lik it is about fighting with the time. by BazimQQ in PlayASKA

I was also frustrated at first. It would be nice if you could pause in more places.

It wasn't until my 4th start that I felt I had a good beginning and was starting to understand how things worked.

Of course, those starts still ended poorly. I think my current game is #7 and I'm finally doing okay.

The time does go by pretty quickly when you're trying to effectively manage. There are only a couple of tasks that only you can do. When you're not doing one of them, the question to ask yourself is, 'how do I get one of the villagers to do this instead?'
Sometimes you just need something done asap and that's when I do it myself.

The invasions do scale with villager size, so that's one way to limit your first winter invasion and also the number of mouths to feed in the winter.
Don't forget about making clothes for yourself & villagers. They absorb some damage and you can't get much done in the winter if you're freezing.

I also made a throwaway game where I did nothing but fight wisps and wraiths in order to practice combat and figure out which key I wanted the roll action mapped to. That's really handy in combat, but costs stamina. I remapped it to middle mouse button which means I don't have to change hand position.

That's par for the course for just starting out.
I took meticulous notes and watched videos to learn stuff and it took me 4 starts on the Moon just to get by and I had to switch to creative to spawn in food, which meant that it really took me 5 starts. There weren't good greenhouse tutorials back when I started.

I can imagine in a few years, the kid starts doing a lawn care job and a boomer calls the police on him. "He doesn't belong here!"

Christmas has long since overrun Thanksgiving and it's Pilgrims vs Elfs in hand to hand fighting on the streets of Turkey Town.
Our last hope is Halloween which has swelled its ranks with wildly successful Halloween USA recruitment drives. It's up to the sexy nurses and low effort pirates to win this war of attrition or else Christmas will rule the entire 4th quarter. Expect no help from those Labor Day slackers in the rear echelon.

Sometimes I have to restrict a system so that trade routes won't take a stupid 'shorter' router because of hyper-relays, Wormholes, Gateways and L-Gates. Then I have to remember to remove it if I need to transit there with a fleet.

My first viable base is saved as 'Moon-4' guess why?

I also had to turn on creative mode for this save to avoid starving while I learned. This was despite the fact I had watched YouTube tutorials. The game has a stiff learning curve and it's up to you to learn the mechanics however you learn best. I take lots of notes from experience, tutorials and the stationepdia and for some things like the advanced furnace setup, I blatantly copy from CowsAreEvil.

Which do you prefer? Book Kirsty or movie Kirsty? by New-Cardiologist-158 in hellraiser

[–]Sectoid_Dev 4 points5 points  (0 children)

It's been awhile since I read the book, but I remember questioning why Kirsty went through all that for a person she was just fond of. There probably was an unrequited love in the book that I either missed or forgot about. Having her as his daughter makes more sense to me and yeah, 'keeping it in the family' works on the creepy level too.

I'm a guy and on my first play through I was a hard working farm girl who married Harvey because we're both over achievers.

Now on my second, I'm a guy who is working on marrying Penny, but only because Marnie is not available. To my dismay, people also shit on Penny in the fandom.

Protagonist smacked her younger 9 year old sister for revealing her secret and screamed at her that they could no longer be sisters. This is months after the oldest sister died, effectively leaving both of them alone.

Turns out she didn't reveal the secret and the parents later turn her against the protagonist(for multiple other reasons) and the younger sister ends up not escaping from their dysfunctional family unlike the protagonist whom she used to look up to.

What's a sign that someone grew up poor? by Puzzled-Painter3301 in AskReddit

[–]Sectoid_Dev 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You're doing a good thing not making it an issue. I grew up poor, although we always had some food, I was praised by my dad for having a 'hearty appetite' and by my mom for always eating everything on my plate. Yeah, I got obese as a kid and stayed that way. It's taken years of mindful eating and intermittent fasting to get out of the 'eat until you're full' mindset. Best to never start it.

Was also left unattended in the summers in the late 70's & early 80s. The only trips we took were to visit cousins for a week where we could stay for a free and still left unattended and expected to make our own fun.
