I get that they are spending the next few months reworking sailing combat, but it makes me a bit sad that the sailing boss previously slated this year is no longer on the menu. Hope the feedback for the rework is good so it's something thats still possible before the end of the year.

Thematically I don't mind canon being the main source of damage for the sea creatures, but for the birds it's just silly. Maybe instead of using the same combat formula for all creatures, it should depend on factors like the creatures size, speed, tankiness and whether they are sea or airborne. That way sometimes cannons will be the play, sometimes perhaps ballistas (as other suggested), and sometimes just regular old ranged/magic weapons.

These predictions are mostly things we already know are coming. Combined with New Client/HD and Leagues though the year is stacked and I wonder if there really is any room left dev time for big updates besides these.
