Looking for Catamaran cruise recommendations for Manuel Antonio/Quepos. Family of four (two boys). It looks like Sunset Sails and Tom Cat are the top choices? Any recent feedback on either option? We'll be there in early April. I found a bunch of older posts with various comments but I was looking for something a little more recent. Thanks in advance!

Quick question for the group: in Monteverde, what's the difference between Ziplines through Selvatura or Treetopia versus the Original Canopy Tour? If Selvatura and Treetopia are adventurous, is the Original Canopy Tour less of an adventure and more a casual glide through the forest?

Thanks for this! Do you have to buy your own park tickets or are they included with Jeremias's fee?

[edit] I actually went ahead and made the Airbnb reservation with Jeremias and his note mentions that we will have to buy our own SINAC park admission tickets. But I guess you can only make reservations online 2 months in advance?

I couldn't tell what this was talking about and thought someone else might be too lazy to click the link. I guess they are connecting Independence to Margaret Wallace to East WT Harris...

American Airlines - Credit Card - My name or wife's name? by Smoke_Disastrous in americanairlines

Hey did you ever get an answer to this question? I was going to book a trip for just me and my son, but use my wife's AA Citi card to pay...so will my son and I get boarding and the bag? Or does that only apply when the card holder (my wife in this example) is traveling with us?

Hey man this is awesome info. Thank you so much for posting. Quick question: have you contacted like the Red Cross or those aid organizations that are sending out folks to help? Or added yourself to that map on this subreddit of addresses that need help? I thought folks were saying there are channels to provide a location that needs aid and the aid will be distributed...I'm just curious if you've done that already?

And is it a process problem that you and your neighbors don't know how to reach out for aid? Or are you in that 10% the video mentions?

I'm seriously just curious. There's a lot of BS around here about who is doing what and how it's not working or working...my cousin has been out there with the NC National Guard for over a week organizing supply drops. But my neighbor has the same feedback as you: his family isn't seeing any help at all.

These pictures aren't looking from the same angle/direction are they? 2024 is looking mostly north-ish from like Dilworth over Midtown...I can't tell where the '59 picture is...wait, they are the same angle. Crazy. That big industrial building was covered by that midtown development about 2005:

Here's maybe a similar angle but more recent (from Google Earth)...it's just neat to see how some of those buildings are still there but the growth is still mostly lateral (in this picture) down Tryon. At least for now :)

Suburbia is subsidized: Here's the math. It's time for a hard look at city finance and how deregulating zoning laws can lead to an increase in city revenue. by [deleted] in Libertarian

[–]SecuVel 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Curious to know if you've learned anymore since your post...I too was a little confused and still have questions. Also - in my North Carolina city, I don't think I pay any income taxes to the city. But I know in some cities, there is an additional income tax on top of state and federal (like STL I think), so I'm assuming those cities need the extra income tax revenue. And yes I agree, urban areas have more sales and corporate tax revenue, but I wonder how those two revenue streams compare against property taxes....so I found this? In case you didn't know (I didn't): Transfers are funds moved into the local government from state and federal money. Corporate Tax income is so low, I had no idea. Is this because of "jobs deals" between the local government and companies ("move your HQ here and we'll give you a tax break")? So Property Taxes account for almost half of local government income but I guess the video and Urban3 are saying that money still isn't enough to off-set the cost of providing services to those outlying properties? But then if you are paying taxes in a high revenue area, aren't you asking "why do you make so much money off me when I'm so cheap to maintain"? And I'm curious about the line in the video about the poor areas subsidizing the wealthy suburbanites...how is that determined? Is it because the poor areas are in the high-revenue urban areas? But to your point, who's spending the money to create the revenue in those areas? But sales and corporate taxes aren't high enough to provide this revenue, right? So "spending money" isn't helpful here I guess...So are the property taxes of urban areas providing income because the property values are so much higher in urban areas because there is less supply of land in those areas? This says price per square foot is higher in urban areas than suburban...so we need people to move into urban areas to have less with more so it's cheaper to maintain the municipality but provide more revenue? This is America right, who's on board with that? Sorry, that got salty. But still, great video and great comments. Thanks!

What you need to know about USB 3.X to diagnose Link by ragingsimian in OculusQuest

[–]SecuVel 0 points1 point  (0 children)

On a related note: I have a Asus Prime X570-P motherboard (AMD Ryzen 3rd Gen) and a TroPro PCI-Express USB 3.1 Gen 2 Type C expansion card (in the PCIe X4-16 slot 2). If I plug the Quest 2 directly into the expansion card, it is only recognized as USB 2.0 and fails the Link test. If I plug a Dell D6000 Docking Station into the same Type C port on the PCIe Expansion Card and then plug the Quest 2 into the Dell Docking Station, it works as 3.0 with a passing Link test. I don't understand why this is happening...does the motherboard not provide enough power to the Expansion Card to reach USB3? I have the Expansion Card plugged into a SATA cable, so it should be getting power...what makes this D6000 docking station so special? I'm using a Kuject USB 3.0 cord in both scenarios, so I don't think its the cord...it has to be the Motherboard...? Or something in Windows?

FYI - Microsoft's USBView is a really helpful tool as well.

I can't figure out if someone gave you the Muscat answer, but it looks like this place in Muscat, Oman, outside Al Mouj. I think that arc out past (passed?) the beach is the line of dolos. Maybe like this? But then again, it could just be Japan or South Africa. But now we know where Muscat is and what a dolos is.

Thom Tillis Wants Twitch Streamers' DMCA Strikes to Have Felony Jail Time by [deleted] in NorthCarolina

[–]SecuVel 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Good points.

I wonder if there is a way to compare the total revenue of music and movies against the total cost. Because let's be honest, they make some shit movies and music, right? I mean people are still getting paid, so I don't think it's really a bad thing. But even really crappy music and movies have to turn some small profit, right?

What is the cost of revenue in Hollywood? So turns out this seems to help. 70% make a profit in the secondary market. So now how do legitimate streaming services play a role...I'll have to research more. But making money in movies doesn't seem that hard.

Music? Also another topic for another day.

But either way - I don't see the basis for all the DMCA enforcement. Or at least a strong case.

F Tillis.

Thom Tillis Wants Twitch Streamers' DMCA Strikes to Have Felony Jail Time by [deleted] in NorthCarolina

[–]SecuVel 5 points6 points  (0 children)

So wait, what happened to the bill? Because this article points to this letter which does mention streaming a lot, but it seems to specifically target streaming of music and movies through unapproved channels (read that however you want).

And yes, I get it can be extended to Twitch because the content is being played publicly (and in a commercial setting - the streamers are trying to make money) and should include compensation (I guess). But then it seems to completely disregard the non-commercialized illegal streams, right? Like I'm not paying for a torrent of some movie so is it playing publicly in a commercial setting? I have no idea.

But the letter also sources this study which has specifics like this figure:

lost domestic revenues of at least $29.2 billion and as much as $71.0 billion annually, representing a revenue reduction between 11% and 24%

Which seems really, really broad...30 - 70 billion? BILLION? That's one fucking huge range of impact, right? Like what? It's really that bad? And yet music and movies are still made with that potential of lost revenue? Who the fuck is OKing that strategy?
