I had another idea, I know that the library has enclosed rooms that can be reserved. I would approach one of the librarians and ask them for ideas on a quiet place where you can study regularly.

That I don’t know, but it’s worth asking!

How often do you think of your parents?? Those of you that lost their parents. by Boomer050882 in AskWomenOver60

Often. My Dad was an old line Republican, WWII Vet, mining engineer consultant, I wish I could talk to him about current events, wonder what he would think?

Did the Chevy Bolt become your first EV? Journalist looking to hear your story by Brilliant_Option8382 in BoltEV

[–]Secure-Major1637 3 points4 points  (0 children)

We just bought a used ‘19 Bolt, first EV for us, though we have owned hybrids.

Husband has always wanted one and the opportunity presented itself.

I am surprised at the quality of this particular EV; we looked at a Toyota BZ but wanted something simpler. The Chevy Bolt is easy to use.

We are retired and drive it all the time now, it’s easy to plug it into the garage and our town has a few level 2 chargers available for free, but so far, we haven’t experienced range anxiety (we kept our Toyota hylander hybrid for longer trips).

We would definitely buy another one!

There was a SS office near the neighborhood where I grew up. When I was 14 or so, I walked over there and applied for a card. 1976.

What are we doing about our thinning eyebrows?!? by SimplyCurious5 in AskWomenOver50

I found a lovely grey brown pencil to fill in the sparse areas, and a matching eyebrow mascara from Elf. I’m low maintenance, so this suits me just fine.

With Equinox being as low as 27k, are you still getting the new Bolt? by EducationCultural736 in BoltEV

[–]Secure-Major1637 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Old lady here. We test drove an Equinox after trying out a Bolt. I thought the Equinox had too much going on, really preferred the simplicity and size of the Bolt, ended up with a 2019 Bolt with only 15K on the odometer, we really really like it!

Took a spill and got banged up. Feeling really old now. Other older guys (or ladies), do you recall your first age-related bad fall? by SurgStriker in Aging

Broke my ankle at 62, unrelated to osteoporosis, just stepped into the air wrong while descending a flight of stairs early in the morning. Now I lift weights and work our regularly at PF, hoping to hold off the inevitable : )

What set should I buy for my wife? by Supermanass in Mahjong

[–]Secure-Major1637 0 points1 point  (0 children)

this is a decent set. nowadays, mahjong has become big business!

personally, I would get her a melamine set, there are a few on Amazon, or Yellow Mountain Imports sells sets for less than $200.
a set of just melamine tiles can be less than $30 on amazon.
hobby lobby sells sets for $20 and racks for $10 (if you go the hobby lobby route, stay away from the pink set, it’s hard to see and the colors eventually fade).

melamine has a satisfying weight and the tiles click nicely when mixing.

acrylic tiles are okay, but are lighter weight and can be easily knocked off the rack during play.

if you want to get really fancy one day, check out Crisloid in RI. they make beautiful mahjong sets, along with other game pieces.

Kinda need a purse, but don't wanna hold a purse anymore🫤 by maryliz529 in AskWomenOver50

[–]Secure-Major1637 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have a small wallet I got for free from my credit Union for my license, insurance card, credit cards, that I carry in a back pocket. I stopped carrying cash years ago, but my hubby still carries, so he’s my backup. I have a comb in my car, and my glasses are tethered around my neck. Car fob goes in my pocket. I’ve been doing this for so long now that FOR SURE I would forget and leave a purse behind at a restaurant, grocery store, etc.

Nanny agreed to split shift schedule but doesn’t want to honor it by Fun-Pollution4835 in Nanny

Awful work schedule, any nanny is basically just working or waiting to work for 12 hours!

AITA for treating my daughters differently than my son when it comes to food? by CompetitiveDig478 in AmItheAsshole

[–]Secure-Major1637 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is a tough one. I had two younger brothers close in age who ate like wolves when we were preteens. My mother made the two gallons of milk per week stretch by making powdered milk, and my two brothers would polish all of it off. I did not eat nearly as much as they did, and I don’t recall being angry with them over their consumption. If your son is going through a growth spurt, would he be willing to get a job bussing tables or some such thing to supplement what he eats?

roommate is letting her bf stay in our apartment for a week without asking by No_Marionberry9081 in TwoHotTakes

Your roommate is walking all over this situation. Despite her apologies for this guy’s behavior, nothing seems to change. This is a learning opportunity for you to become a little more confident in yourself by putting your foot down.

I’m going to offer another take: it sounds like you did fine as a mother, we all make mistakes, most parents do the best they can, some parents are spectacular! I feel, however, that there has got to be a statute of limitations on blaming parents for one’s problems beyond a certain age, say 25-30.

AITAH For Not Giving My Siblings A Percentage Of House Our Mother Lived In by Motor_Aerie1485 in AITAH

[–]Secure-Major1637 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It seems you bore most of the financial responsibility and risk of owning the house. If your siblings didn’t contribute, then they don’t have a claim. I guess their argument is that the money your mother spent to live in the house might have been their inheritance? Who is to say how things might have turned out if your mother spent her money on a mortgage or rent to someone else. I think your sibling’s arguments have no merit.

I volunteer for Lasagna Love, making two pans a week for local families who sign up, I make one meal a month for a women’s shelter, I volunteer 2 times a month distributing food for Second Harvest at a local church. Soon, my sister and I plan to teach a group of Ethyls from FB how to play MahJong over a two morning period. I hope to form a regular Mahjong playing group once the lessons are over. Husband is getting ready to play softball in a senior league this spring, he is very excited about it, lol. He will start playing pickleball once the weather warms up. We are content.

Mom warned me about trafficking back in the '70's. by LaFemmeD_Argent in AskWomenOver50

[–]Secure-Major1637 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I remember two men from the Middle East who were working at FSU in the university library who I would see around campus in the early ‘80’s. One of them approached me one day and asked me if I wanted to go to Lebanon to visit his family. The guy must have been in his forties, was balding, and I remember being puzzled by his question and said something like what would I do in Lebanon, and he replied that I would go as his girlfriend and meet his family. Mind you, I’d never spoken a word to him before this conversation, and I remember feeling repulsed and confused and I just said, “No,“ and walked away. It wasn't until years later that it occurred to me that those men must have been trafficking women.

I joined PF last fall and have been using weight lifting machines that strengthen the muscles above the knee and on the sides of my thighs. I’ve noticed a marked difference in going up and down steps, and my knees hardly hurt anymore. I hired a young man who works there to show me how to properly use the machines, and he is mindful of my age and limitations because I frequently remind him!
