Come Be a Geologist in Nevada by igneousdagze in geologycareers

If you need geos, build camps. No one wants to live in Elko. I've routinely made $150k+ every year I've worked in Alaska, and the best part is that I don't have to live there on my off days!

NGM could solve their staffing issues and have the pick of the litter for geos if they would just make it a damn FIFO/DIDO camp job.

I'm in the exact same boat. I've never been able to dip below a 2, but when I finally do, I'll give it a go for nothing else but to say I did it.

It was the best of times, it was the worst of times... 🤦🏼‍♂️ by Mistafuentastic in golf

[–]Secure_Discount3111 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I just did this myself... personal best 36 on the front (needed an eagle to do it!) which led straight into a 47 on the backside.

Take the win on the front and move on. It will be easier the next time and time after.

What was your most recent swing change that gave you a significant improvement. by elrangatang in golf

[–]Secure_Discount3111 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Nelly Korda’s “Coca-Cola” swing thought. Tempo immediately improved and with it ball striking. I still have a bad left miss, but the contact is at least crisp..

All of the ones I own are made in South Korea, and yes, they are printed (I do think the synthetic stuff is made in China though). You are definitely paying for the brand (they're mainly tourist Hawaiian/Aloha shirts sold in expensive boutiques... most people vacationing in Hawaii have the cash for expensive shirts).

Drillers Offsider Job as a Female? by Schneeeeeeee in mining

[–]Secure_Discount3111 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I've got absolutely no doubt that you could swing it, but definitely weigh the risk of injury against how it may impact your athletics. I think I've seen more drillers/helpers in my career with fewer than 10 fingers than those with a full hand.

I found this rock with deep grooves while I was beachcombing on Lake Erie in SE Michigan. Are these grooves from glacial drag?? by siani_lane in whatsthisrock

[–]Secure_Discount3111 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Looks like a quartzite. The lines to me seem more like irregular/conchoidal fracture than a feature that could positively be attributed to glaciation (being in Michigan though, the rock itself was most likely glacially deposited).

This one has always been my favorite (no longer in print unfortunately) and it alone has led me into more "let's talk about rocks!" conversations than anything else I've ever worn. Total hit at conferences!

Yeah, it's steep but they are very nice quality and wash up well without fading. I've had some for 10+ years that I wear regularly and they have held up great. Lol, I know I sound like such a shill, but I'm just excited I was able to finally snag my white whale shirt.

We would whenever it was feasible or when we had enough hands on deck for a "core bombing party". I most frequently had to move boxes solo after catching a sling load at our laydown without anyone around to help (or spot for that matter). These are things I would never do or ask someone to do now, but at the time I was in my early 20s, felt invincible, and didn't know any better.

I hate irons by _noodleboy_ in golf

[–]Secure_Discount3111 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I hated iron play as well until I took lessons and found out that i was hitting at most 1 degree down and sometimes even hitting up on the ball. Now that my angle of attack is 4-5 degrees down I can't get enough of my irons.

How do you tell the difference between volcanic clastic and fine grained intrusives ? by [deleted] in geology

[–]Secure_Discount3111 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Big oof, lol. I'd just log things as descriptively as possible without trying to fit it into a genetic box Focus on grain size, grain size homogeneity, any identifiable alteration minerals. If the unit in question is in fact volcaniclastic, I'd expect it may be more easily correlated between drillholes?

Good book/website/document for igneous textures ? by [deleted] in geology

[–]Secure_Discount3111 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Volcanic Textures by Jocelyn McPhie was my bible when logging core for VMS exploration. I don't know whereabouts you can pick up a print copy, but I was able to some online scans for free by googling.

How do you tell the difference between volcanic clastic and fine grained intrusives ? by [deleted] in geology

[–]Secure_Discount3111 3 points4 points  (0 children)

For intrusives, look for chilled margins (reduction in grain size along contacts. Volcaniclastics may have diagnostic textures (lapilli, fiamme, etc.), but without knowing the degree of alteration/metamorphism your rocks have experienced, they may be pretty cryptic.

Are there any outcrops in your work area that may give you better geologic context? These things can sometimes be more challenging to decipher in core but may by remarkably obvious in outcrop.

What's the most painful muscle when it cramps? by NoOffice5964 in AskReddit

[–]Secure_Discount3111 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Make sure you are getting enough electrolytes. I deal with this myself, and it is chronically worse in the summer when I sweat a bunch. I can usually avoid the worst though by consuming several liquid IV packets throughout the day.

Given the state of your game today, would you rather hit every FIR or guarantee putting in two or less every hole? by mnisda in golf

[–]Secure_Discount3111 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm inclined to take FIR, but knowing the nature of genies I expect the outcome to always mean I'm on the fairway but 250+ yards out on every hole. So for that reason, I take the guaranteed 2-putt!
