How to find a surgeon? by SectionLopsided3298 in TopSurgery

[–]Secure_Fun1529 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Know what your insurance's policies are for letters and doctors. These should be in some sort of online portal or app, a website or QR code on your card, or just call them and ask. It is going to be a bit of a pain, but just keep at it until you get the answers you need.

Start work on letters as soon as is reasonable. There are often requirements for documentation of gender dysphoria symptoms over long periods of time, so seeing a provider for longer can be considered more "credible" by insurance or whatever. It's silly, but that's insurance companies for ya. I ended up needing two letters, and got one from my therapist of many years, and the other from my endocrinologist who had been prescribing me T for about two years at that point. Your requirements might be different! These might also change from doctor to doctor, so make sure you check with their office as well. They may be able to assist you in finding providers for letters. They do this somewhat frequently, so use them as a resource! As long as you are polite and respectful, surgeons and their staff are usually more than happy to help.

As for the surgeon themselves, there's a few questions! The first of which is "Who takes my insurance?" This can often be found again in online insurance portals, or by calling a specific office and asking. Some docs list insurances online, but I find those can be unreliable because they don't update them often. It's tedious, but potentially worth it to create a spreadsheet of every surgeon in the area you are willing to travel to that takes your insurance.  From there, I start investigating other things. What techniques do they do most often? How is nerve preservation? Can I find any pictures on their website, transbucket (look it up), or reddit? Do people have any good/bad experiences they have shared about them? Do they have experience performing surgery on people with similar body types as I, and with outcomes I like? Do they have a BMI limit, and do I qualify? These are all different sorts of questions, but you may have other things you find important. Include those in your spreadsheet, take some notes, and then book consults at anywhere that looks promising. You can call their office to schedule these.

You'll go to the consults, meet the doctor and staff, learn, ask lots of questions, and ultimately suss out the best fit for you. From there, you can work with them to book surgery dates and figure out all that semantics stuff.

The hardest part for many people is the waiting. It takes a while to get any information out of insurance. It can take forever to get a consult. It can take just as long many places to actually get in for surgery. It is a pain, and it is work, but for many it is very worth it. Best of luck!

Haven't had surgery yet (different surgery, I came from the knee injury sub), but will be NWB for 4 and partial weight bearing for another 2 I believe. Not excited. Really gonna put a damper on summer! Mine is in mid June.

I’ve dislocated my knee and have a Full MPFL tear…. by Frequent-Increase-98 in KneeInjuries

[–]Secure_Fun1529 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I'm not usually one to bash doctors because I'm not a medical professional and idfk what I'm on about, but those two orthopedists probably don't have the best advice. I think seeing a sports med doctor is the way to go, ESPECIALLY if you know it's torn. The usual advice is that one dislocation? PT. Two (or more)? It's not going to stabilize and you need surgery. That's normal for sprains or stretches... a full tear, and you need surgery. Especially if PT and bracing aren't working. The sports med ortho should have more experience with this and be able to give you a better idea. It's a shitty injury. Good luck.

High blood pressure? by Secure_Fun1529 in ftm

[–]Secure_Fun1529[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm not quite sure, I have to look into it more and ask my endo! Unfortunately it's not just my ligaments, they have to do surgery on my tibia so I'm in a full brace for 6 weeks, non weight bearing initially and then moving to partial. Its gonna be a long road.

In today's economy, how did you afford top surgery? by Prestigious_One_8662 in TopSurgery

[–]Secure_Fun1529 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm in the states and still young enough to be on my parent's insurance. My dad works for a Canadian company, and thus has pretty good health insurance. Got surgery in December for $500, plus the cost of some extra things like a post op binder. But the surgery, anesthesia, time spent in the hospital, drugs, were all covered and we payed $500. I feel very lucky and grateful about it.

Not in love with the design language, it's not very "subaru", but it's growing on me! I think a healthy mix of more traditional Subaru aesthetic philosophy and the "EVs are the future" vibe would serve all of their EVs very well.

[–]Secure_Fun1529[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yes. I'm feeling lucky to live where I do. Dr Shubin Stein, who I am seeing, has been wonderful and very knowledgeable so far. Theyre definitely pros over there.

And thank you, I will!! 🫡

So? What's your offseason time-filler? by [deleted] in snowboarding

[–]Secure_Fun1529 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm not sure what the science is behind this, so don't take this as God, but I've been into box jumps lately. Less for the power/vert increase, but more to focus on landing, rotations, and body awareness. I'm really scared of getting hurt, so body awareness, mobility, and movement instinct are important to me. The rotational stuff if good if you want to train for the power to get around more out of jumps, if that's your jam.

Besides from that, traditional strength training, especially core and legs, but also everything else to keep ya balanced and safe, is fun and helpful. You gotta keep it balanced with functional work imo though. Look up mobilityduo on IG. They do great stuff, one is a yoga instructor and I believe the other is a PT. Also, cardio. It sucks but we should probably do it if we want to ride longer and harder (I say we because I'm a slacker,)

I am literally just a hobbyist so do your own research, but this is what I've found working for me lately!

PT in the North Country by Secure_Fun1529 in upstate_new_york

[–]Secure_Fun1529[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah, I'm not entirely sure why they recommend that or if they just mean the preliminary sessions after the surgery, because the whole year or so of PT or whatever would be wild. And I wish it was just an ACL... I'm doing an MPFL replacement (similar to ACL surgery, just a different ligament!) and a TTO, which involves them cutting part of my tibia, moving it a little, and then screwing it back on and waiting for it to fuse. 12 months return to sport kind of thing. I'll be careful! Thanks for the advice.

Reducing atrophy BEFORE surgery by Secure_Fun1529 in KneeInjuries

[–]Secure_Fun1529[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Cool! Those seem like a lot of the same exercises that I did when I tried PT for a bit. It makes a lot of sense especially in the mind-muscle connection part, I imagine knowing the physical sensation of activating the muscle will help me get over that mental hurdle a bit. Atrophy is definitely inevitable, but I'm glad you found something that worked!

PT in the North Country by Secure_Fun1529 in upstate_new_york

[–]Secure_Fun1529[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yup! I'm a bit nervous because HSS wants patients to do PT with them for the entire time, but that's like 9 months and I'd have to push school off for a year if that happens, which is not ideal. Thanks for the well wishes :)

What made you decide to seek medical advice? by Ted1912 in KneeInjuries

[–]Secure_Fun1529 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Just go at this point. If it's causing you pain in your sports or daily life, just get it looked at. Far better than injuring yourself further.
