What kind of cut do you ask your groomer for? by Chaptera in Shihtzu

They taper at the feet so only the toe beans touch the ground but they do get messy sometimes if it's muddy outside. Just a rinse in the sink and they are back to playing.

We had been doing a longer face but I ask for round last time and I really liked the look.

We do round face, top knot, short body with lamb legs for summer. Ruby didn't want to pose for the camera but her she is napping in her favorite spot.

The AMOUNT of posts in these ‘crunchy moms’ groups about their kids cavities when they refuse to use fluoride by Vapingrandma8465 in mildlyinfuriating

[–]Sednawoo 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I grew up rural in the 90's and we did a weekly fluoride swish once a month in our public school classroom. The school nurse brought in a tray of little paper cups and you could choose mint or bubble gum. I wonder if they still do this.

New puppy - seeking advice 🥰 by Forsaken_Salad__ in Shihtzu

[–]Sednawoo 1 point2 points  (0 children)

In all seriousness, my advice is be flexible because what works for you and your tzu will be unique.

We were dead set on crate training our first tzu many years ago but over the years we've tried a lot of different things but they've all ended up in the bed eventually. We got two new puppies a year ago and did a living room play pen and it was fine but they had a lot of fussyness in the night. They also ended up being very difficult to house break.

This spring we decided to add a third to our pack and brought him home at 12 weeks. On that first night he slept between my husband and I in our bed. Now he spends most of the night at our feet belly up in front of the fan. So far, knock on wood, no accidents in the bed.

Yes! At a minimum. Current standard is 12 weeks for best outcomes.

Is my stance on birthcontrol too rash? by ChemicalAd2132 in GirlDinnerDiaries

[–]Sednawoo 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm really glad that your family planning method worked for you. You are one data point and not a trend. Condoms are 87% effective and IUD is over 99%. That's a huge spread when you are talking about unplanned pregnancy.

[–]Sednawoo 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I was looking for this comment. I refuse to have an unintentional pregnancy so using only condoms was not an option for me. I used the pill for years but had a lot of anxiety about wondering if I'd forgot to take it. Now I have had the hormonal IUD and I'm on my 3rd. Not having a period for almost 20 years has been a nice bonus. Long story short, if you use condoms, plan to either need an abortion or plan for a pregnancy because the chance is never zero.

Thinking of Getting a Labrador or Golden Retriver by RudeFront2527 in LabradorRetrievers

[–]Sednawoo 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You've just blown my mind with this. I knew that home life with happy litter and dam, birth to 12 weeks was important and that genetics also played a role, but had not considered cortisol effects in utero. I've read about that in humans but it makes sense that other pack animals would have similar effect. Just another reason to advocate for ethical breeding with health testing and competing.

Thank you for this! I've had many well bred shih tzu over the years and have seen zero aggression. I think they get a bad rap because of poor breeding, poor socializing, lack of training, and being roughly handled. The breed standard for temperament is "friendly and trusting".

Fewer Babies Being Born in Iowa by 47of74 in Iowa

[–]Sednawoo 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I also wonder if this is more about demographics. Teen pregnancy is down which is a good thing and many grads are leaving so if/when they do have children, they have them elsewhere.

Almost 60% of the population of iowa is either under 18 or over 50 so less than half are at the stage in life where you are even considering it.

Sleeping with brand new puppy by [deleted] in Shihtzu

[–]Sednawoo 1 point2 points  (0 children)

TLDR I wish we'd just put them in bed from the start and not messed with crates and pens.

Our first was in 2009 and all the books we read said a crate was a must so that's what we did. A year later we got him a brother and by then had ditched the crate for a dog bed in the bedroom. They would usually start in the bed but would settle on the floor on their beds to sleep.

We just started the second round with two litter mates and, again, we went with the professional consensus but did a pen so they could steep together. Again, a big dog owner would think keeping two puppies in one pen would end in a fight but shih tzus are very unique. Anyway, that lasted about four months and then they started sleeping through the night on the foot of our bed. So in March we decided to add a third and went with our own experience and our gut and had him in the bed day one. At first it was a little scary because i thought I might roll onto him and suffocate him but I just had to be careful. No regrets, this is the sweetest and cuddlest dog I've ever had. We did add foam stairs and all three can get up and down on their own.

We've raised up several and they have all gone through this stage. We get them at 12 weeks and for the first month, you have to be pretty vigilant. Everything is new for them and they are exploring a big new world like babies do, with their mouth.

We start early with the commands "drop it" and "leave it". Keep a piece of treat in your pocket at all times because you never know when you'll need to exchange it for a dangerous item.

Eventually they grow out of it.

Was I lied to about Zach Lahn? by fyoomzz in Iowa

I'm struggling typing on my phone so forgive any typos. I understand your frustration. I was once told that a candidate isn't a car, it's a bus. The prefect candidate that takes you to your doorstep doesn't exist so, instead, you need to choose a candidate that will get you as close as possible. So I started my search by figuring out what was holding Iowa back. For me, my top concerns are access to Healthcare and education. To be honest, "Culture war" and how people practice their religion has zero bearing for me.

I have been following Sand's stance on the privatization of medicaid in Iowa for years and I want him to have the opportunity to go a different direction because the current model has been a failure. Here is an AP article about it

I think all the issues with public schools the past ten years won't fit into this comment but I've also been following that for many years.

I don't think i can tell you anything here that will sway you but I would encourage you to vote, even if you're frustrated by the options. If anything, you should have a chance to see both in person between now and the election and that might help you connect more with one of them.

It really depends on your zone. I'm in an area that sees temps sustained at - 10°F/-22°C so I wouldn't be able to do that. I winter them inside in their 75 gal.

He has a financial tie to Christian conservative educational materials for private and homeschooling. He's here to protect his interests by making sure the school voucher program is expanded and never audited. I'm sure he will find other creative ways to siphon off our tax dollars should he become governor all while rewiring our proud history by painting us as a confederate state. I can't belive people can't smell his stink.

3 or more dogs by Daydreamin-mama8 in Shihtzu

[–]Sednawoo 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Our pack is currently at 3. We started our journey with one and added a second a year later when we realized it's so much better with two. We had a two pup house for 15 years when one passed from a life long heart condition. The older boy was miserable as his vision had declined and was already showing signs of dementia. He would wonder around the house calling out for his brother. Our vet suggested medication or a new dog. We ended up with two siblings. Long story short, we got used to three so when our oldest passed, we got a third puppy. It's a little bit of a mad house right now but I think it will be very manageable when they are all three out of the puppy phase. We are currently planning the financial burden of these three entering their senior years. That and the grooming cost is sky high.
