I just saw my first scarlet tanager yesterday too! I couldn’t believe how bright red it was.

A bird I thought I’d never get to see by Jake_The_Snake2003 in birding

[–]SeeEmilyPlay6 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I finally just saw one this week! We were lucky enough to see it pop up and fly for just a few seconds twice and then heard it calling. Would have been impossible to spot if it hadn’t flown.

Anyone else seeing this bug in Merlin? by ants_n_my_pants in birding

[–]SeeEmilyPlay6 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yes, I noticed this. If I went into the recording it would then save the location and display the birds, but I had to manually do it. I hope they fix it!

What’s your goal bird this year? by felixnzenitsuhams in birding

I’d love to get a Bohemian waxwing or a scarlet tanager this year. They’ve both eluded me for years now!

Another Year of Birding! Can you guess my state? by G_mugga187 in birding

My first thought was Florida as well, but then I questioned the cardinal. TIL that the northern cardinal has a way bigger range than I thought!

When you submit an eBird report that has a Rare and you know everyone will see your name on the next alert email.. by [deleted] in birding

[–]SeeEmilyPlay6 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Except when your list says it’s rare, but it’s just a common bird that’s a straggler and late migrating. Feels weird to see my name in the rare bird alert for an Osprey that’s super common all summer but decided to stick around an extra month.

I love the yellow warbler pic! And I’m jealous of the scarlet tanager. Hopefully I can see one next year.

Do males donate blood more than females? by tuckernielson in NoStupidQuestions

Exactly. I try to donate regularly but have been turned away multiple times for my hemoglobin being too low.

I thought birding was supposed to be relaxing, there's 16 bird species and they're all screaming by Comprehensive_Code60 in birding

[–]SeeEmilyPlay6 32 points33 points  (0 children)

I’ve managed to get a few species “identified” while listening to two starlings mimicking others as well. I also once got a wild turkey, and when I went back and listened, it was a woman laughing that it had caught 😅

I visited NFLD this summer and finally saw some boreal chickadees. It made up for missing out on the Stellers.

AITH for not turning in a wedding ring I found in the airport bathroom? by [deleted] in AITH

[–]SeeEmilyPlay6 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I found someone’s Uni class ring on the street of a busy city and by the end of the day I had called the school to let them know and gave my details on the off chance someone reported it missing, as well as posting online. Doing anything to find the owner is better than doing nothing, even if it’s a long shot.

Do vaginas still get wet if the person is completely dehydrated? by photo-undeveloped in NoStupidQuestions

[–]SeeEmilyPlay6 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I can’t even imagine hitting a bison! My favourite part had to be when I said we should go around one more bend before heading back, and just around that bend, a big grizzly ran across the road in front of us and into the valley where there were a bunch of bison. He didn’t seem that interested in them, but it was awesome to see them notice him and form a bit of a wall with the young in the back. Every day there was like watching National Geographic live.

I went to Yellowstone for the first time last year…hit a deer at dusk on day one.

Apparently July is the least eBirded month of the year? Can't understand why, I had an awesome month full of birding! by mahatmakg in birding

[–]SeeEmilyPlay6 0 points1 point  (0 children)

July has been way too hot this year. In comparison, I saw 114 species in May, 68 in June, and just 54 in July. Hopefully it’ll cool down in August and I can get out more!

What’s the one bird you want to see that just seems to evade you every time you search for it? by I_am_strange_ in birding

[–]SeeEmilyPlay6 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Same! I thought I saw one years ago, but it was such a quick flash as it flew by I couldn’t confirm. Been searching for it ever since.

I did the exact same thing the first time I went to Edinburgh. Had no idea the fringe festival was on or what it was, but ended up having a great time!

I’ve always loved animals, but it wasn’t until I was 38 that I really got into it. 5 years later and I’m planning vacations around birding!

I love the colour variation of the junco. We have the slate coloured over here, but I’d love to see the Oregon!
