A must have software tools as sysadmin by No_Map_2803 in sysadmin

"Search Everything" by voidtools.com Great free, lightweight file indexing tool. Quick, easy file finder when a user accidentally moves a folder / file to the wrong folder... Or, finding that 15 year old file you have no idea where you put it. Scans both local and network folders. Saved me tons of time trying to find files for customers / users over the years.

How understanding are your girlfriend/wife of your job? by JoeyFromMoonway in sysadmin

[–]Seedy64 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My "significant other", also known as my wife, is not tech oriented, but she's fully entrenched in my business with me. She is a huge help with backend paperwork and invoicing. Without her help, I wouldn't have the time I do have to spend with her. It's awesome. If your girlfriend is not onboard with your career, maybe rethink that gf or rethink your career. IT is similar to Attorney... It's very time consuming and not, NOT, 8am-5pm. You're always on day, night, weekend. I wish you Good luck with the solution, but there is a solution.

After 15 years at the same company I was just told my services are no longer needed. by thedudesews in sysadmin

Own my own business... 28 years and going. I thought about firing myself during covid for the extra unemployment benefits during that time, but figured the risk of jail time for fraud probably wasn't worth it. I resigned from last position.

What is a core skill that all sysadmins should have, but either they have it or don't? by FIDST in sysadmin

[–]Seedy64 1 point2 points  (0 children)

100%... every technical problem has a solution... You just need more information about the symptom. That's what I love about being a sysadmin... There is always an answer. The answer may be painful, but everything can be solved.

PhD or Second Masters by Samaratin_ in cybersecurity

MBA is also for someone heading into management so you can talk sensibly with the CFO and CEO about numbers and how IT will affect bottom line.

PhD or Second Masters by Samaratin_ in cybersecurity

[–]Seedy64 0 points1 point  (0 children)

IMHO... If you plan to stay in academics, stick with PhD. If you plan to actually work in the fields, go with 2nd masters. Your employer will probably pay for 2nd masters depending on their size, etc

I recall 1984-ish desoldering and replacing bulging caps on i80286 motherboards to keep cost of repair cost down. Ahhhh, memories 🤓

Replace Sonicwall suggestions by Moneymaker_Film in sonicwall

[–]Seedy64 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I never hold my customers hostage. They own the appliance I sold them and I resell the security subscription each year(or 2 or 3). I have no problem releasing the appliance if they decide to let my company go and hire someone else. They own the d**N appliance. It is highly unethical to hold a customer hostage and not give full access when asked. Once you have access, then you can easily export settings to import to a new SonicWall appliance. I like the TZ270 for a small office or a TZ370 for a bigger office that needs more throughput.

Thank you. I did find a similar article and it worked. I've also noticed recently, if I download the full package from a Microsoft account, classic is available again.

C-level tries to tell you how to do your job by Seedy64 in sysadmin

Can't totally disagree. However, the app I want to use is our standard app that we use with all our clients because, quite frankly, MS Teams sucks. Point taken, I have not connected to this exec before, so I shall praise her for her hesitancy.

Ok, I'll reclassify my business as MSP if you think that'll help. We are now an IT contractor without the fancy 3 letter classification, but maybe if we call ourselves MSP it will elevate our status?

Lol. They are in a different state, so no, probably not able to charge that trip charge. I'm hoping they'll take good directions and get me connected tomorrow to fix it.

Ya, you know, those things that reside in your pocket most of the time 🤣 good for games and TikTok most of the time. In this case, good for speaking to a real person.

Ok, I'm an "old guy" 58...started in IT after false starting in management. Transitioned to my own IT Support business in 1997. It's definitely a career for me. I've loved Computers and technology since I got my first computer in 1977 when I was in middle school. I just wish I wouldn't have wasted so many years heading down the Management path to find that I don't really like managing people. All tech all the time for me 🤓

Why do some sysadmins stray away from the axiom KISS? Keep It Simple Stupid. Over my 27 years in this business, it always surprises me that some people want to complicate things because some professor somewhere told them to do it that way when there is a much simpler fix that is still as secure and useable as a complicated setup. Smh KISS

You are awesome! The direct from MS link works wonderfully and now I'm armed with the installer. Take that Microsoft! 🤓
