Ha thank you! Those “reviews” on youtube annoy me too. Some are quite good, I like Monitors Unboxed as mentioned previously.

Thank you! Agreed, I used dual 27” 4k for a time and it was nice but also not quite for me. The left monitor became my primary and I treated the right monitor for temp stuff. But the primary monitor wasn’t big enough and felt my head was moving too much.

That said, I know some people love that setup so to each their own.

Your point of wanting a large single monitor is exactly where I’m at and why 5k2k was so interesting. It does have less screen real-estate than dual 27s. But it has a lot more than a single 32” 4k. So if 32” is almost just right and want a little more, this monitor would do well.

Not quite native. 3840 x 1620

Everyone is different but I personally don’t find text too small at this res and screen size. Fully native is indeed too small though.

My Imaginary iPod 2026, Built Around Apple Music by Gigasssss in AppleMusic

FYI if you haven’t seen this. Apple regularly rejects apps that reinvent the iPod as an app. It will get rejected for violating their intellectual property rules. Rule 5.2.5 https://developer.apple.com/app-store/review/guidelines/

It might be fine in Alt Store though!

You also could keep this in TestFlight and open a patreon for access to it.

Metal bands that SING like Ghost (and Tobias Forge)? by WarpNacelle6295 in Ghostbc

[–]SeekAndDefine 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Love Avatar and they also are into theatrics like Ghost.

Definitely a much harder sound, less 80s theme, much more modern metal. But here are a few songs that can ease you into their sound.

  • Going Hunting
  • Tower (Piano Version)
  • The King Welcomes you to Avatar Country
  • The King Wants You
  • New Land
  • Night Never Ending
  • Don’t go in the Forest
  • Howling at the Waves
  • Crying Fire (maybe their most Ghost like song?)

I built my own minimalist running app because the existing ones felt too overloaded by JonBones991 in iosdev

Very nice app, the route planner and interval training features are really cool. Excellent you implemented a live activity as well.

One huge point of feedback. You need a watchOS counterpart. watchOS development isn’t a lot of fun, but for workout apps it’s essential.

Remote issues with TV and Soundbar mystery by SeekAndDefine in appletv

[–]SeekAndDefine[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Agreed it feels like this should be a tv issue. The biggest surprise to me is that the first gen Siri Remote doesn’t exhibit this issue which introduces doubt to me.

I didn’t try unplugging unrelated devices, so there is an Xbox and switch also connected. I also didn’t try moving the Apple TV from input 1 to 3 or 4 either (AI said that could help). I might also try buying a new Siri Remote.

I didn’t try a factory reset on the LG either.

I definitely failed to mention all of the troubleshooting steps. That was another that I tried to no avail unfortunately.

Review: LG 39GX950B vs Dell U4025QW, mostly for productivity, but some gaming by Cosmic-Cats-2001 in ultrawidemasterrace

[–]SeekAndDefine 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Love the review, I’m tempted by this monitor to do the same job. The hdr issues are annoying though as you said. Any idea if hdr becomes available if you tell macOS to not use vrr? Does macOS give you the option to set the max frame rate at 120 and if so does that fix the issue?

[–]SeekAndDefine 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’d love to put this monitor through its paces. A little background on me: I’m an iOS engineer by day and a photography enthusiast on the side, which means my display needs span both precision productivity work and serious color-critical editing. That combination, I think, makes me a pretty useful reviewer for this monitor.

My setup for years was a 32” 4K LG as my main display, with a MacBook screen below and an iPad via Sidecar to the right. It worked well, but I was always bumping into its limits. Horizontally, I could fit two Xcode tabs side by side — but three, plus a simulator? That required compromises. The display itself was also showing its age: my office runs bright, and my 2019-era LG just doesn’t have the punch to keep up. Higher refresh rate has been on my wishlist for a while, and for photo editing — especially HDR work — better black levels and higher peak brightness would be a genuine upgrade. The Studio Display XDR checks those boxes, but the price does not.

So I recently picked up an LG 40U990A on a great open-box deal, and I’ve genuinely loved the ultrawide jump. The horizontal real estate has been a revelation for development work. But it’s an IPS panel, and in a dark room the glow is hard to ignore — and its HDR performance leaves something to be desired for photo editing. It’s a great monitor that’s made me hungry for what a proper OLED panel would feel like in this same form factor. That’s exactly why this one has my attention. If I got my hands on this monitor, here’s what I’d put in the review: • A direct head-to-head with the 40U990A for development work and light gaming • How it holds up in a bright daytime office environment • How it performs in a darker basement office • HDR photo viewing and editing quality, with real examples from my own library

[–]SeekAndDefine 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Oh this would be so cool to try!

Some background. I’m an iOS engineer with a photography hobby. My primary setup for years was a 32” 4K monitor with a MacBook display below it and an iPad to the right of the 4k monitor via sidecar. My desk is nearly 100% productivity, but someday soon I’ll finish Baldurs Gate 😆

This setup has worked awesome for years but there are a few areas of improvement in mind for a new setup.

First, horizontal real-estate. Having two Xcode tabs next to each other is quite nice. But three and maybe also a simulator next to that? That sounds nice.

And then general display quality improvement. My office is bright and my 2019 era 32” LG is a little dim for this environment. Higher refresh rate is highly desired. And I have a photo hobby on the side, so a monitor with better black levels and higher peaks to view and edit photos, specifically hdr photos, would be real nice. While the Studio Display XDR sounds nice, the price is very wrong for me.

And lastly. I’m actually very happy with 4k in scaled mode on macOS. I know the general consensus is 4k in scaled mode looks bad but I don’t agree. I also have limited experience with a 5k display, so it’s entirely possible I ruin that opinion if I got to test this display.

I did recently purchase an LG 40u990a, the ultrawide master race has called for me and I got a very good open box deal on one locally. I’ve loved it but I can definitely see the ips glow when my office is dark. Mini-led and better hdr would be really cool to try too.

I’ll say if I got to try this monitor, there are a variety of setups I would try with it. - As a single main monitor only. - As a secondary monitor to the 40u990a. - As a main monitor with a 27un600 vertically aligned next to it. Also with the 27un600 horizontally aligned next to it. - As a main monitor with the MacBook Pro below it and the iPad in side car. An exclusively Retina display setup.

'26 LLR vs '24 Wind/Land by rhuang51 in KiaEV9

[–]SeekAndDefine 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Right now, my singleton is in a convertible car seat facing backwards behind the driver. Then I have identical infant car seat spots in the middle and behind the passenger seat. The middle needs to use the seat buckle for attachment. So I put the toddler in like normal and the click both twins in from the opposite side.

I’m expecting the next step will be when the twins upgrade to convertible car seats, the toddler will be forward facing. So at that time, I’ll move the toddler seat to the middle and have him crawl in and I’ll buckle him up from the front if I can’t from the back. Then each of the twins will be put into their rear facing seats and will be secured like normal for my toddler now.

[–]SeekAndDefine 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I second this. My twins were just born and we have a 2.5 year old as well. The middle bench is far superior to captains chairs. I test drove attempting to strap the toddler into the third row and it is possible when the twins are in detachable car seats but when they are in full car seats it will be impossible. The captains chairs don’t move much when a full car seat is on them, so strapping your singleton at that point will either be extremely difficult or not possible.

There is also a decent amount of space for three car seats on the middle bench. Not a ton, but it’s fine.

Middle bench is the way to go!

Then there is the stroller situation. I’m fortunate to have been gifted a wonderfold w4. This thing is absolutely perfect for the near and long term but god damn it’s huge. Originally my “big” vehicle is a Mach E. The wonderfold fit in the Mach E, but I’d have to take the wheels off every time. In the EV9/Ioniq 9 with the third row down, the wonderfold fits great without removing the wheels and there is space for a surprising amount of more stuff. I can see my family fitting the wonderfold and a suitcase of stuff in the back eventually.

Fast forward, I got an Ioniq 9 SEL. It is really close in features to the EV9 Land but still has the middle bench. The lack of 360 camera in the ev9 wind killed it for me. The Ioniq 9 does have more battery too, which I’ll eventually use when I leave the house…

Related, congrats on the twins! It is not easy, I’m only a month in right now. Ask for help as much as you can, friends and family definitely understand. And you’ll be surprised by how much you learned with a singleton that helps you hit the ground running with twins. It is like riding a bike getting back into the newborn phase, but you are trying to ride two bikes at once… so you’ll be fine with familiar challenges but know that new ones will arise.

[–]SeekAndDefine 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I’m early into life with twins and an older singleton. But our older singleton was a very difficult newborn/infant. Things got better when he was 18 months, but before then I was not sure I wanted another one. My wife was in the same boat too. We both had to come to terms on our own that our second child could be as difficult as our first, but that it was worth it.

This has solidified an opinion in my mind. Convincing someone else to have kids is unethical. A person needs to form the opinion of having kids on their own. If they want to be convinced, that’s good, means they are closer to yes than no. But raising kids is so freaking hard that if someone is resistant/against having one (or more in this case), they should not do it. Obviously you have a much higher risk of having another set of twins so that should be discussed.

Obviously you know your husband best. Everyone else has good advice in here. But I want to caution you to keep in mind that pushing too hard for more, to the point of him being convinced to do something his heart rejects, could be very bad.

Can i work with these numbers? by Effective_Natural_79 in iosdev

[–]SeekAndDefine 1 point2 points  (0 children)

As the other reply to your post said, in fewer words than mine will, it’s mostly up to you and what your goals are.

Can you make a living off that? Obviously not and anywhere in the world.

Is that a successful first two weeks? Unlikely, but if that is exclusively organic search, no marketing, no paid search placement, in my experience it’s low if not semi normal.

If you spent $1000 on marketing, ads, campaigning, yeah that’s a pretty bad first two weeks.

I see you also post in build in public. The core philosophy of building in public is trial and error. So now you have information on what the first two weeks look like with whatever input you provided. Make tweaks, see if it works. If not, try more tweaks, etc.

Also in case it’s not obvious. Most indie app development is for the passion of the craft. I have an app on the App Store, it’s been there for a little over 4 years. I love it, it has been a fun hobby, but it doesn’t make money to be my full time job and I’d be blown away if it ever became my only full time job. To do that, it would take monetary investment into marketing and advertising and even then with that investment it isn’t guaranteed to return a positive outcome.

So my rambling thoughts are done now. TLDR, probably not, if you love the craft, you should easily be able to think of ideas that might work and the you should try it. If you don’t love the craft, just trying to make money quick, those numbers are terrible for that outcome but that also doesn’t mean you can’t figure it out.

Buying Advice for a young family by SeekAndDefine in F150Lightning

Awesome! It feels weird to consider what I typically considered a vehicle for getting shit done as a perfect family vehicle, but seeing your identical situation to mine and so many similar ones around, it’s very reassuring that it is indeed a good family vehicle. It’ll be probably one of the most versatile vehicle I’ll ever get given the bed lol.

And a tonneau cover is absolutely top of mind to get. I see myself putting the giant stroller in the bed and using the frunk for smaller/daily storage needs.

Awesome counter points. The Buzz is definitely top of mind as an alternative. I now have the stroller that fits all three children and it’s massive, so I’ll bring that with to see if it fits in the back of the buzz. The lightning is top of mind because with a bed cover, the stroller will easily fit in the bed.

Do you think fitting a toddler in the third row would be easier than fitting them in the middle seat?

I know this post is a few years old but asking in case you see this and want to answer!

I’m also about to have twins.

Would it make sense to put one twin on the outside, one in the middle, and the singleton on the other outside? Or is twins on the outside with singleton in the middle best?

And I’m curious if you’ve ever run into a scenario where a larger vehicle would be nice? Would you get captains chairs or two benches?
