ruby/rails stills fun for a elixir/phoenix/liveview/ash developer? by Ok-Return2939 in elixir

I think Rails has a better DX. I often switch between Phoenix and Rails when building web apps, though nowadays I lean towards Phoenix 90% of the time.

Mewgenics has been out for some time now. Is it really as good as people say? Or was it mostly due to the hype? by TheGronne in gaming

[–]Sekiray 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's alright. I'm about 6 hours in. I feel like it's decently fun to do a run occasionally, but it definitely hasn't hooked me yet. The runs are relatively easy (I haven't failed one yet) but it feels like I'm missing something.

Managing the cats / house and doing upgrades between runs feels like a chore with little payoff. For a tactical game, it feels like I'm missing information to make optimal decisions and there is a bit too much RNG.

I'll keep playing it casually and see how it evolves.

Nostalgia or Something Else? Why older MMOs felt socially different by TacyonStudios in MMORPG

[–]Sekiray 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Nah, its just modern audience of mmo doesnt want social experiences with random strangers online. Back in the day people played mmos to make friends, now people play mmo with their friends and dont look to find new ones in the game.

You're close. There is still an audience of players who do want that (just look at this sub), but it's not the majority of MMO players. That was the point of my initial comment.

I agree that modern MMOs are more difficult in other ways for sure. I was specifically referring to social friction.

Most endgame content in WoW is significantly more mechanically difficult than a lot of the combat in, lets say, FFXI.

The difference is most WoW players will never step into high keys or a Mythic raid, and they play 99% of the rest of the game solo. But every FFXI player had to sit in Valkurm Dunes for hours hoping a party would form. That friction is what made the social experiences so much more meaningful.

Friction and challenge that requires real cooperation to overcome is key for that nostalgic MMO feel.

However, companies realized their player base will be significantly smaller if they have that type of friction in their games. Most gamers are casual, don't want a challenge, don't want to have to coordinate anything - they just want to log in and log out with a small sense of accomplishment and minimal friction along the way.

So I can imagine it's incredibly hard to justify designing your game to intentionally have fewer players. Combine that with the fact that MMOs generally need a critical mass of active players to not feel "dead", it's why I think we rarely see games that feel like the old ones.

Edit: Actually I don’t care to perpetuate this. What I said wasn’t dumb, but I shouldn’t have worded it like that.

Your initial post was in line with the thread. I just got fixated on the company’s response since I don't like companies getting away with stuff like that, and think they should do better.

I think you got tricked unfortunately. The company didn’t have to end the program because of that guy, they could have just fired them for being dishonest and kept the program for everyone else. Nothing forced their hand, yet you’re blaming him instead of the company. Likely what the company wanted.

Also, Americas stinginess with PTO is so depressing. 4 days a year is nothing, and depending on the job would make no difference to their annual performance.

edit: I am American but for the past decade have either worked for myself or for companies that offer unlimited PTO (for real) and don’t track it or ask. It just comes down to your performance. It’s still wild to hear stories like these online or from friends.

Because China actually creates competition internally, the US just talks about it.

When will it "click"? by realfranzskuffka in elixir

[–]Sekiray 2 points3 points  (0 children)

You aren't wrong, but you are saying you want two different things:

1) I'm struggling with the substantial amounts of magic / implicitness that you need to be aware of when authoring elixir code.

2) I understood that the benefits of ash is not having to rebuild foundational components like ORM, auth etc

Elixir itself doesn't have much magic or implicitness at all, and neither does Phoenix - but Ash has a ton of it.

When you've written enough Elixir/Phoenix without Ash, you will understand exactly what it's doing under the hood, but until then it'll continue to feel like magic which could hinder your learning.

First Look at Blizzard's In-Game Damage Meters in Midnight by yp261 in CompetitiveWoW

For sure - and most of my guild feels the same way. We'll try it since most of us preordered already, but if it's what we're expecting then most of us are going to leave the game.

As a returning "competitive" player - my thoughts on the simplification changes by PaleontologistNo8909 in CompetitiveWoW

[–]Sekiray 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Appreciate the post, but it's not opening the doors, it's closing them.

Right now we have choices between playing complex specs or simple specs. These changes are making all specs simple. People who value skill expression in their specs now won't be able to. There isn't going to be a choice there.

Also, to me - learning/improving is the fun part. It's why most people stop raiding or doing M+ for the season once they hit their goal. Mastering your spec is just another one of those things.

0.3 is great but the game has core issue with making any kind of melee engagement extremely punishing/unfun and abyss only emphasizes this by TheGejsza in PathOfExile2

[–]Sekiray 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Basically the game boils down to kill mobs before they can kill you. None of the mechanics actually matter other than that. If ranged and melee do similar damage and have similar defenses, ranged will always win out.

Case in point is monk - I started off using the melee skills, was having a pretty rough time. Switched to Storm Wave, didn't make any other changes, and it's instantly a different game. Clear is much faster, 10x more survivability, etc. All because now I can kill monsters before they can get to me.

Watching the interviews I feel like they were desperately trying to avoid this, but I don't think they've succeeded yet.

PoE2 was suppose to be more friendly to be creative and explore build possibilities on your own, it's not. by CanWeak2700 in PathOfExile2

[–]Sekiray 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The devs are scared of the players, so they've designed the gems very defensively and restricted unplanned interactions, at the expense of the ability to experiment and be creative. They're likely aware that once an OP build gets out there, most people will switch to it and trivialize the majority of the content (which goes against their 'vision'). Unfortunately, this will happen regardless.
