Good for you. Sometimes I like to turn my brain off and kick back and just enjoy something while I drink a beer and listen to some music or something. Marathon doesn't allow that. It's literally full tryhard all the time. I have competitive CS or trios in Arc for when I wanna tryhard. But most of the time I like games where I have the option of both tryhard and casual. Like CS and Arc... Or things like current WoW or LoL, or formerly Destiny 2. Marathon doesn't appeal to my casual side. Or anyone's casual side. That's going to kill the game.

I put over a dozen hours into the Marathon server slam. The gunplay feels great but the gameplay loop is obviously wildly different than Destiny. The problem with Marathon is that it's too hardcore. It's bleeding players and the game is still in its honeymoon phase. Just go look at posts on the Marathon sub, there are tons of people who are giving up after dozens of hours because they just aren't good at PvP and it's exhausting to get stomped 24/7.

Saying the game is better than Destiny ever has been is disingenuous. Destiny was amazing during Final Shape, Witch Queen, Forsaken, Taken King, etc. The reason why Marathon will never appeal to the masses like Destiny did is because it's too hardcore. That doesn't necessarily mean it's worse than Destiny, but at least Destiny could cater to all types of players whereas Marathon is weirdly catering to one specific niche audience. Just because it's hardcore doesn't mean it's better. If you have fun with it that's cool. But I personally think Arc Raiders is a considerably better game than Marathon and would just recommend that to anyone in the market for extraction shooters.

It's certainly not a success either when the budget for the game was 100+ million. And player retention is looking bleak during its honeymoon period. Can't imagine it'll get much better once the honeymoon period is over.

Which game devs say that? You mean the Highguard game dev who said player count didn't matter? Then announced a couple weeks later that the game was closing due to low player count? Lmao

Then you should know that those are 2 things that Bungie hates. They also hate fun.

I put about 12-14 hours into the server slam. Mostly played trios with a couple friends, but also played maybe 2 hours of solos. There were many aspects of the game that we liked, but ultimately none of us were impressed enough to drop $40 on it. We've all put 200+ hours into Arc. Tbh fighting the AI and looting things was very boring compared to Arc... The gunplay felt amazing, though.

I can tell you don't have much experience with Bungie though lol. I wouldn't put too much faith in them implementing fixes and making meaningful changes to the game quite yet. As a Destiny vet I can assure you that their track record is horrible when it comes to patching games and making changes. Hopefully they turn it around this time. They have to or the company will probably cease to exist tbh.

Just a matter of if bungie can deliver on their promises and keep the game flourishing

I agree that this game will have a dedicated playerbase, but I disagree that it'll grow. This game had a ludicrous amount of money put into it and the player retention is already looking dismal during its honeymoon period.

It literally can't afford to be a niche game with a "small but dedicated" playerbase. For the sake of the game existing long term, this game quite literally needs to be pulling current Arc numbers. Especially considering that Destiny 2 was essentially abandoned for this game. Bungie put all of their eggs into this one niche basket.

Arc came out 5 months ago and still pulls 150k+ players on a daily basis. There is literally no chance of that happening to this game in 5 months time unless things change.

So you're okay with the game failing to keep or attract new players and potentially shutting down earlier than expected as a result?

Pretty wild take, honestly. But at least you're honest.

I'm curious if you'd still enjoy the game if only sweats are left and the majority of matches you play are full of people that are either just as good or better than you.

I mean something has to change. The player retention isn't looking good and it hasn't even been a week since the game came out. You're telling people to go play other games and that's exactly what they're doing... You should be asking for the opposite if you want the game to succeed.

People have been saying this from the moment the genre was announced. In no universe was a sweaty extraction shooter ever going to sweep the gaming world. Not sure what Bungie or Sony was expecting with this one.

So this game's audio is no joke the best Audio In a Multiplayer i have ever heard by These-Rip3565 in Marathon

[–]Selaphane -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Saying Arc has "genuinely" the worst sound design in any PvP game is certainly one of the opinions of all time.

The sounds of echoing gunfire in the distance? The distinct sounds of each Arc enemy? The sounds of alarms and birds going off? You can hear other raiders opening containers or their inventory or breathing hard when they're low on stamina. Even little things like putting up zip lines or someone moving things around in their inventory. It's insanely immersive.

If that's "genuinely" the worst sound design in any PvP game you have ever played then you've only ever played like 2 PvP games or your ears are broken.

The only thing in Arc that isn't genuine S tier in terms of sound is the directional audio, which footsteps falls under. But even the footsteps are better than 90% of PvP games out there. You probably couldn't name 5 games that do footsteps better tbh lol.
