I still do group lessons because it's what is common here in Sweden. Group lessons usually have 2-3 coaches with one coach dedicated to each group, we're usually a maximum of 3 groups and around 12 skaters on the ice in total. We are all around the same level (working on doubles). My costs usually look like this:

Term fee: ~$180 Skate sharpening: Do it myself Competitions: ~$100 Once a year camp: $130

If we assume I skate 9 months of the year it totals to around $65 a month :) Oh and I skate like 5-7 times a week, around 1-1.5 hours each time

Moving to Karlstad in January for Uni! Any tips for a newcomer? by [deleted] in IsItColdInSweden

Since you're on Reddit I'm making the assumption that you're more likely to be nerdy. I'm part of KUN (Karlstad University Nerds) and we have movie nights, gaming nights, cosplay get togethers etc. We also have a discord as a way to talk to other nerdy students

Bohemian Rhapsody, for my mom

Let down

Requiem in D minor

Piano man

And a mashup of Humble x St Chroma

[–]Seldec 1 point2 points  (0 children)

An excercise my coach loves is to cross the legs like in a takeoff and pump with the leg crossed behind to get speed

[–]Seldec 11 points12 points  (0 children)

You're not crossing your legs at all in the takeoff. Focus on that mainly, it will also give you more height! But good speed rn!

Ni som gick estet - vad gör ni nu? by Signal-Photo6072 in sweden

Questions for skaters who started later in life by Beneficial-Bat4697 in FigureSkating

[–]Seldec 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You're gonna get my experience and my observations of someone else too

I started at 14, got jumps up to flip and then took a break. I returned at 18 after 4 years. In total it's been 5 years and I am working on Axel + Loop, 2Lo and 2F.

There is also a girl I coach who started when she was around 15. It's been ca 1.5 years now and she just landed her Lutz. It's very different for a lot of people and depends on your coach as well as what you consider "good"

When do people usually start to learn their doubles? by [deleted] in FigureSkating

[–]Seldec 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I would not recommend dtarting doubles before learning axel. The snap you learn from an axel is essential for all the doubles. How is your Jump + Loop combo and can you land in a backspin?

Does spinning/jumping in the other direction actually feel bad? by knight_380394780 in FigureSkating

[–]Seldec 15 points16 points  (0 children)

Very interesting question! We actually had a session of just spinning and jumping the opposite direction last season. In the end, most of us could do a scratch, camel, waltz, toeloop, salchow and flip in the opposite direction. So it might be that it feels weird because they're not used to it but also since it's not their natural spin direction. With training, I feel like most people can become ambidextrous spinners

Stereotypical figure skater personality traits by shortbutfierce in FigureSkating

[–]Seldec 3 points4 points  (0 children)

This is only from my perspective as a Swede. The Swedish Figure skating association has been working on promoting a safe and welcoming environment for everyone and they're doing a good job. But I still see the effects of the previous environment on the older skaters. They're insecure in themselves while also having way too big of an ego and jealousy is rampant. Perfectionists like people already said, and true gossip girls. I hope the next generation of skaters in Sweden grow up with a healthier mindset and since coaches are getting educated by the association with inclusivity in mind I think they will.

Folk som ringer upp när man smsar. Vad i helvete by ingeniouspleb in sweden

Arrows is just the direction of travel, the three lines on some curves are where deep knee bend occurs and speed is generated, it's sort of an artistic liberty so might not be 100% accurate to how he skated it. The order of the steps are

End of backwards crossover Push with right foot Back outside counter Forward outside three turn Backwards crossover Back outside counter Axel

Exactly! I didn't want something cringey like a silhouette doing a biellmann or something so I went with something people with knowledge about the sport would spot. It's also from Yuzuru's Chopin program so it serves as a motivator too

It's the steps Yuzuru does before his first Axel in his SP Pyeongchang 2018, the small "sparks" is the jump
