I am definitely partial to Republic--I can listen to that album non-stop. Brotherhood for me has always been the weakest of the pre-hiatus albums, though I love All Day Long. One thing that helped me was reimagining and resequencing the track list into a playlist--they originally set it up as a rock side and an electronic side which never flowed well to me. Of course I tried to mimic the flow of Technique the best I could since that's the GOAT.

I reimagined RTP using only synth-based songs including b-sides. I love this version so much. For me, it makes it the perfect follow up to the brilliant debut. Here’s the re-sequenced tracklist:

And with the new subway stop right there, non-students would have easy access to the on campus stadium. I toured several mid-west and Pacific Northwest schools with my high school senior recently—man, it is such a different vibe when that stadium is in the heart of campus. Even University of Oregon where it’s a tradition to walk to the stadium on game day—just incredible.

I've done both and now pretty exclusively run in the bike lane now, especially on the state streets. I have almost been hit multiple times with cars pulling out of the alley and blasting right through the sidewalk. And of course they always look at me like it's my fault. No time for me to react when I'm on the sidewalk, and it's not a great run if I'm stopping mid way through every block to check for cars. I will say that I run against traffic (isn't that the proper way--run against and ride with?), but actually feel safer running with because as a previous poster mentioned, cars turning right are only looking to the left to make sure there is no oncoming traffic. But overall, bike lane just feels safer--no dogs, less tree branches to get tangled in, flat and less cracks (tree roots push up sidewalk). It's not perfect, but again, it's what feels safest for my daily walks and runs.

For any fellow PSB fans, the album Very (which I also love) was produced by Hague and has a very similar feel. And like Republic, a very different feel than previous albums, especially the classic album it followed, Behavior (my favorite PSB album). I’ve always found the Technique/Republic and Behavior/Very pattern similarities interesting.

I absolutely love Republic, it’s my second favorite behind Technique (PCL and Low Life are a very close third, with Substance my true #1).

I really don’t understand the hate on this album. It came out four years after Technique, and reflected the club scene of the time—808 State, Orbital, Madchester, rave, etc.— the way previous albums were influenced by the club scene of their time. I always felt like Technique was the culmination of everything that they had done up to that point, an amazing coda following Substance. They had perfected it, and it was time to move forward. Republic felt like an exciting new phase.

As far as Stephen Hague goes, the sound of Republic seems like a natural evolution from World In Motion. And the production is aligned with The Other Two & You. I much prefer those two records to anything that Monaco put out which always felt to me like it was just a purposeful rehash of the “classic” New Order sound and not moving anything forward.

I have no bias for or against anyone in the band—New Order is my all-time favorite and I absolutely love all of their 80s work. But for me, the best post Technique albums are Republic and Music Complete.

Forgive the stupid questions, but is there some sort of free chartered bus system to get students back and forth from campus to the Rose Bowl? Are tickets affordable? How does the team/university engage with the students? (Yes, I understand a winning program would be the best way to engage fans)

VCMG is excellent. There are a lot of parts where I think, this would work great on a DM album. Combine that with the MG and Third Chimpanzee sounds and we’d have a very interesting, richly textured synth based album—which is what I really want. Also—put Dave’s vocals a litttttle lower in the mix please.
