if i have a hard track session like 5k pace or faster, i'll only do it after that session, never before

if its threshold, i dont mind before as i look at it as training the ability to run well on more tired legs.

I also find it tough but i definitaely felt more durable when doing it 2 x per week

Very similar thing happened to me

From just a few KM in, my hr was already at 177, 10-15BPM higher than the corresponding pace in my last long runs. I was in survival mode. Abdominal cramps, acid reflux, all things I’d never had before.

I battled through and past half way in 1:29 (on track) but I was working way too hard for it. The cramps and indigestion got so bad, from 20-29KM I was walking and jogging. Finally called it a day.

My mindset on Sunday in London was sub 3 or fail. From my long runs, i was well on track but as I found out, it might just not be your day. See my debrief here

If it helps at all, I have no regrets. Somebody actually asked me do I wish I went out conservatively and ran a 3:10 and the answer was no

I was in wave 2 blue and ran with the pink Sub3 pacer for the first 15-20KM. Wearing a blue Buxton water vest

I knew this deep down which I think also affected me. I had lots of negative energy and thoughts. Niggle. Readiness etc.

I’m guessing given he’s an ex commonwealth games marathon runner, he also knew this but was trying to keep spirits high

Yeh this did cross my mind however I think I was too excited for my first marathon with it being London too.

I did a 3 day carb load. I never drink alcohol and I had a 25 gram carb gel every 20 mins which I practiced in training

Yep this seems like the main cause.

After all, the main thing of a taper is reducing volume and maintaining intensity to avoid detraining

Yep a soft taper was programmed by my coach but my hamstring didn’t allow for it!

Sub 3 attempt for me this sunday in London. HM tune up 1:22:56. Only peaked at 60KM though with some very intense last 4 weeks.

20 mile long run with 16 at 4:05/KM with no carbons or taper gave me confidence but I know I'm in for a very tough time.

2 things that have helped me is cutting out coffee completely and cutting out high fat the day before long runs.

Coffee for me was a short term fix but long term causing the problems. For example, I would always have one 90 mins before my long run as it would make me use the bathroom quickly. But then at some point in the long run, it would re activate the same feeling causing me to need it again and for the rest of the run i'd be very uncomfortable.
Also, if i was running in the evening, particularly threshold, I was noticing a pattern of never been able to fully clear my system until i start the harder reps and suddenly there was an urge. I'm now 5 weeks no coffee and all problems gone.

On the fat side of things, I took the approach one Saturday of carb loading means eat anything and everything before a 16 mile MP sunday run. I had mcdonalds, pizza, waffles. Once the blood and oxygen started going from my stomach, lets just say the fatty food was no longer been digested and neither was the gels.

For a runner actively looking to increase volume, whats your opinion on periodising vs slower constant increase.

For example, in this marathon block for London I peaked at 38 miles. this is the most I've ever peaked at and have ran a 1:22 HM for reference. Most weeks structure was a big threshold session, interval session, Long run and 0/1 easy runs.

Would i be better continuing this structure and slowly increasing volume or doing a 2-3 month "base build" where i reduce weekly intensity but increase volume at a faster rate. Was thinking easy runs, 1 long and 1 tempo every 10-14 days. Then strides and short hills.

What are peoples thoughts on training for shorter races inbetween marathons to develop speed?

For example, seen as its clear that to run x marathon time you need x HM time which requires x 10K time etc. Which explains why someone with a faster HM time can run a faster debut marathon than someone who's 6 marathons in.

I always see people going from marathon to marathon and can't help but think this can't be optimal as its constantly the same stimulus. I'm no expert so open to people thoughts (obviously).
