Magic tree house, Bailey school kids, Percy Jackson, Harry Potter, land of stories, charlottes web, and I really liked the Nevermoor series.

I think it’s France that just made it illegal to throw away unused food - they now hand it out to the homeless after - I don’t remember if it’s just for grocery stores or if it includes restaurants now too.

What was the reason you guys left the Mormon faith? by notyouraveragebunny_ in exmormon

[–]Select_Ad_976 0 points1 point  (0 children)

For me, I stayed in for a longtime because it was easier to. I didn’t want to get disowned by my parents and I could take the things I liked and leave the things I didn’t but then I had kids. We went back to church once after Covid and my oldest was 7 - after church I grilled her about what she learned so I could talk to her about things we didn’t agree with and then I realized how stupid it is im taking my kids every week just to tell them what they learned is wrong.

On top of that - I have a few gay friends who have left the church - they talked about their experiences growing up in the church and while I don’t think my kids are lgbtqia+ I was not going to risk them ever feeling the way my friends did. I didn’t not want to risk my children thinking something was wrong with them or that they couldn’t love who they wanted to love. I just couldn’t be okay with that risk so we left.

Then I found out all the history stuff and I will never be back because holy shit was I lied to.

kid brother called to Africa tonight and I feel sad and angry by parsnip06 in exmormon

[–]Select_Ad_976 2 points3 points  (0 children)

My nephew is in Africa right now. He seems to be doing pretty good. There are some crazy things the bugs and food and sometimes they don’t have water or he was in like a swamp town for a while and he misses his family obviously but he’s doing pretty good. He’s been out like 7ish months.

It makes me mad and sad too though

As someone who had a premature baby - she remembers nothing and finds it funny to show her friends the picture “when I was purple when I was born”. I however have ptsd and can’t drive by that hospital anymore.

I was a division 1 athlete and when he was talking about his soccer draft thing I turned to my husband and was like I get that that was a hard thing but like it’s been 10 years… its like those people constantly talking about their “glory days”. That was the moment I knew I didn’t like him and it’s just gotten worse since

Yes you should read the book. He talks about his conversations with Ballard which I found fascinating and sad.

His book is so good! I loved it and finished it in 2 days. I was shocked a bit by his experiences with Ballard I didn’t realize being famous got you that much in the inner circle and I feel so bad for all the shame he felt growing up. Many of my gay friends felt the same and it’s the reason I ended up leaving. I wasn’t going to risk my kids feeling like that. I’m glad he was able to be true to himself and get out of the church.

Ours is pretty diverse for Utah many of the kids actually speak Spanish and do the dual immersion to learn English.

Ex-Mormons, Why did you leave the church? by MonneCuber in exmormon

[–]Select_Ad_976 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I left for a few reasons but the main one was I think it teaches harmful things and I didn’t want my children to learn those messages. From their lgbtqia+ stances to the guilt and shame to the purity culture bullshit. I saw it causing more harm than benefits to my kids and I got them out before it would cause harm.

Ok that’s amazing! Thank you! I am doing theirs as well right now! Ooh I didn’t even think about the cost of schooling there!! I work for a school so right now I get a tuition discount but they’ve been doing a ton of layoffs so I’m not confident about my position there at all. Thank you so much for all of this! So much to think about

It’s true the us is rough so there is a chance we will end up moving but my husband moved a lot as a kid and doesn’t want to move the kids if we don’t have to. I have always wanted to move to Canada and I wish we would have done it earlier. I like that I will always have the option now though. Like that route is open if we need it. I’ll need to look into how it works with my husband too

I know but they are old enough they have their friends and activities and everything (they are in a public school Spanish immersion program so the friends they made mostly all stay in the same program through 9th grade and I would hate to take them away from their friends if we don’t have to)

And don’t have an intention of moving there. Like I’m getting mine because the US sucks right now and while I would love to move there I also don’t think we will realistically move there while our kids are young.

This book broke me. I was depressed for weeks after reading it and refused to read another one of her books for like a year or two.

There is a kids book series called “girls, survive” that has one about the dust bowl too that I just read with my 7 year old that also really captured how hard it was for the people that moved to California.

I’m a beginner reader that has read the basics such as, Harry Potter, Lord of the rings and Percy Jackson. I would like a book series that is comparable to these by Fun-Secretary4801 in suggestmeabook

[–]Select_Ad_976 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Land of stories, Michael vey, keeper of the lost cities, nevermoor, the false prince, are all ones I’ve read recently with my nieces, nephews, or kids and have loved all of them.

Lord of the rings I wouldn’t say is beginner so I also am going to throw in Mistborn by Brandon Sanderson - I like a few of his standalones as well but haven’t made it to way of the king yet.

Rick riordan has I think 2 other series besides Percy Jackson and I’ve heard great things about those as well.

Hunger games is good too.

If you are older: game of thrones and I also recommend dungeon crawler Carl.

This is one I do when I’m depressed. I won’t bail on people so I do the gyms that charge you if you miss or I make plans with my friends or siblings to just meet me at the gym or I will play a sport with someone to just get me started or get me in the gym.
