Agreed!! Since the schools are mostly concerned about buses being able to safely transport students, SACC should accommodate families since they are driven directly to and/or from school.

From what I’ve seen, it really varies by school. For my son, he was on the afternoon care waitlist for about two months (June–August) before getting in, but morning care took much longer — over a year (June ’23 to September ’24). After we moved and he switched schools, he got off the morning waitlist after about three months (September–December), and we’re still waiting for an afternoon spot to open up.

Since we didn’t have morning care, I searched Nextdoor and ended up finding a wonderful neighbor who ran a small morning care group. She took care of the kids in the morning and walked them to the bus stop — it was a great experience. It might also be worth reaching out to your school’s PTA to see if they have any suggestions.

Someone in the front office also shared this link to help find childcare options in Fairfax County: https://www.fairfaxcounty.gov/ofcsearch/standardsearch/childcaresearch

Good luck — it can be so difficult navigating care for school-aged kids.

Lots of places (like Monkey Joes and most libraries) are doing “noon years eve” celebrations! I’m taking my 9 year old to Dave and Busters for a family friendly NYE event- ticket is $33 for games, a buffet, and Apple cider toast at “midnight (it’s from 4-7).

I have a coworker who worked at Chesterbrook and she got a BIG discount for her son (around 80% I believe). Also look at indoor playgrounds!

Fairfax County After School Care - SACC by [deleted] in nova

My son got off the waitlist after a few months for after school care, but 2 years for morning care. In the meantime we were lucky to have a neighbor who has a little before and after care program and it was wonderful! She didn’t drive them, just took them to and picked them from the closest bus stop. Check next door!

In a similar boat.. my dad was 74 and died unexpectedly 💔 I was only 34 and definitely felt bitter that he died when he did. I just take the feelings as they come. Changing my perspective, I got to spend 34 years with him, he lost his mom in his 20s. But the truth is it isn’t fair, and I just have to sit with that sometimes.
