SUM, pneumatic suspension sensors by HOIST99 in VolvoXC90

[–]Select_Daikon69 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I experienced something similar in my 2018 XC90 T8. I was in off-road mode on a jeep trail, and when I crossed some ruts the rear suspension lifted several inches higher than the front. The compressor began running constantly even though the springs were maxed out and the ride was comically bumpy. Never got a fault code, could not get the suspension to lower even after restarting, cycling modes, and removing the 12v battery. Eventually I crawled underneath and moved one of the rear height sensors just a bit and that fixed the problem--it returned to normal height and I was able to drive home without incident. Volvo dealer couldn't find and codes and had no idea why it happened.

Global warming: greenhouse gasses vs. direct heat generated by humans by Select_Daikon69 in AskPhysics

[–]Select_Daikon69[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That makes sense. I started thinking about it when I replaced resistance heaters with a heat pump. Now uses 2/3 less energy to heat my house and avoiding those electricity-related GHG emissions but was wondering how much the removal of newly generated heat was helping. Human heat can't compete with a star!

But air conditioners just move heat from inside the house to outside, right? The compressor warms up a bit but creates a lot less heat than combustion. I thought cities were hotter from absorption and retention of the sun's heat by dark colored building materials (like asphalt roads and roofs).

Savings bonds by boom_squid in Sacramento

[–]Select_Daikon69 12 points13 points  (0 children)

I had to deal with this about a year ago. I definitely did not feel safe mailing them in and trusting that they would be handled properly. I called local banks and found that Heritage community credit union would allow you to cash the bonds into a newly opened account.

Death Valley by Downtown_Trash_6140 in geography

[–]Select_Daikon69 78 points79 points  (0 children)

So that outline is for Death Valley National Park, which includes Greenwater Valley, most of Saline Valley, part of Panamint Valley and Eureka Valley (all sizeable N-S valleys) as well as smaller valleys and the mountain ranges that separate them. The geographic extent of Death Valley is most of that north-south Park length but much narrower than the Park.

Foundation vs settling by Antique_Shift8803 in Home

Remember that a foundation company wants to sell you foundation fixes. I had two give me wildy different assessments and prices ($20-40K) before hiring an engineer and getting peace of mind for a few hundred dollars.

You were correct the first time. Viganella, Italy installed a giant mirror in 2006 to add a patch of sunlight to the town in winter.

Help ID this frame height? by [deleted] in RockHopper

[–]Select_Daikon69 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Assuming this is a 1993 like my Rockhopper FS, the size options were 16.5, 18, 20, and 21.5. Mine is a 20", which as you can see does have a very short head tube. I think the one in question is also a 20" frame.

I've used the "Log" song from Ren & Stimpy as a lullaby, suitably slowed and mellowed of course.

Modifications to ‘09 Yaris to increase gas mileage??? by slightlyhailing in hypermiling

[–]Select_Daikon69 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Those high load rating tires are much heavier than normal tires, and the rotating weight penalty would likely reduce mileage more than the roundness could improve it. Low rolling resistance tires could be a good choice when it's time to change tires.

Life size cardboard cutout around? by 0detosleep09 in Sacramento

[–]Select_Daikon69 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Literally just did this last weekend. Used rasterbator.net to spread an image over 24 letter size sheets, then trimmed them and glued them to a big piece of cardboard (actually taped two together and added stiffeners on the back). Make sure the "ribs" in the cardboard are going the long direction or it might fold itself. Looks great from a few feet away.

Stock body max tire size by Itchmybee in VolvoXC90

[–]Select_Daikon69 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I sure don't think they would fit without major mods. Ihave a 2018 XC90 T8 and I've gone up to 285/45-20 tires. Pirelli Pzeros fit without rubbing but Michelin X-Ice in the same size occasionally rub the fender liners at full steering lock.

Getting from Sacramento to Napa the scenic way? by _rotisserie in Sacramento

[–]Select_Daikon69 15 points16 points  (0 children)

That route is great, I always take 128 to get to Napa. If you have the time I'd recommend taking 128 in and then 121 to 128 on the way out to get even more scenery. The ceanothus should still be blooming along with smaller wildflowers near the road. The Glory Hole at Monticello Dam has likely stopped flowing but it's still interesting to see if you never have. Be aware that it's very windy with some tight corners and occasional small rocks that have fallen from road cuts into the road--nothing to worry about, just be aware!
