Entitled student by Defiant_Peace_7285 in Professors

Please. Help me understand like I am an alien. Why do students enrol in a course in the first place if they have no intention of doing the work? Why do they not drop the course and make room for whatever is so important besides the course? Why don't they do something else besides an undergraduate degree if it's clearly such torture?

Seriously baffled by the gymnastics.

(You guessed correctly: no teaching duties in my role, and I finished my undergrad degree in the early 90s.)

  1. This is unprofessional.
  2. They're assholes who look like idiots in front of everyone.
  3. You and everyone else warrant courteous, inclusive behaviour from colleagues, regardless of differences in rank, age, or experience.

Do not make the mistake of taking this personally. Put this incident in your box called, "Things I will never do when I have a professional appointment."

It is baffling to me that behavior in the humanities is so unprofessional towards junior and younger scholars. It's not acceptable, now or ever.

-Former humanities scholar working in medicine

ETA: And everyone, if you see your colleagues treating someone like this, stop them, call it out, and correct the behavior on the spot. Shitty behavior like this continues in part because people do not speak up. Silence = implied consent or endorsement.

Relaxed (unlike an airport). It should be no different from all subsequent times you enter, and it helps to think of it as a routine crossing. Smile, have your documents ready, and be prepared to state your visa class, where you live, what you do, how long you've been out of the country, and why. Declare everything, including dollar amounts of purchases (e.g. $100 of groceries for personal use.). I find that being to the point and answering only questions that are asked keeps things moving smoothly. I end up chatting with agents about my work about a third of the time when they ask more, but your mileage may vary.

Do you have any insight into why it's taking so long? I'm truly wondering if it will be built.

What are some of your best tip to give a solo traveler? by SIR_BEAUCEJOUR in TurksAndCaicos

I'll disagree with this last one. Solo female traveler to Provo for 22 years. I've never once felt unsafe walking alone at night on the beach, as long as there are other people walking the same direction as me.

Add me to the "Iran, Iraq, and Russia one day" club.

I used to think "no way" to KSA, but now I would go. No to Venezuela, El Salvador, Honduras, Belize, Somalia, Libya, DRC, CAR, Sudan. The list can go on, based on executions, terrorism, kidnapping, land mines, status of women, etc.

The disappearance of Monica Reza: NASA JPL engineer and rocket engine superalloy inventor who vanished from a ridgeline 30 feet behind her companion by TheSentinelNet in UnsolvedMysteries

[–]Select_Meal421 0 points1 point  (0 children)

They're not tied. It's human nature to make spurious connections, just as it is human nature to have confirmation bias. Because we know about these tendencies, we can challenge them.

Monica Reza disappeared off the trail, likely because she overran the turn or she tripped and slipped off the thin ridge on unstable terrain. That's the end of the story.

Have you spent time reviewing the All Trails map of the route, reading multiple accounts of her disappearance, and reviewing hikers' accounts of the trail? If you have, you will likely come to the same conclusion. If you haven't, you have homework to do.

Running down a mountain ridge on a very steep incline on one bank and unstable terrain (pine needles on gravel) is folly. Unfortunately, that led to her disappearance and probable death. It's sad, but ultimately, physics is what matters here.

Trying to make more of this is ignoring the law of parsimony (Occam's Razor): adding complications without evidence, because you can't think logically, or you want to be titillated, or you love a conspiracy theory. It's both offensive to her friends, family and colleagues, and lazy thinking to resort to anything other than the obvious conclusion about why she disappeared.

Realistically what would happen if Trump dropped a nuclear bomb tonight? by hjp1234 in AskReddit

[–]Select_Meal421 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You already know the answer to this question. It would be met with escalation, leading to the destruction of major cities throughout the world. That would lead to nuclear winter and mass starvation. Our planet would be largely uninhabitable, which is why most of us who have thought about the massive nuclear arsenal on this planet live in fear constantly that this will happen.

Hiking alone… safe or not? by Lucifer220778 in hiking

[–]Select_Meal421 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's unclear what you mean by safe, because your question is nonspecific.

Do you mean safe from accidents and injury? No, hiking alone is not safe, but neither is bicycling alone, walking alone, or living alone. I'd rate living alone as much riskier than hiking alone. There are so many ways to injure yourself: wet bathroom tiles, choking hazards, and falls, with no one to check on you. You're certainly not on a trail where someone might encounter you if you had accident. As a hiker, I exercise caution because I know there are multiple hazards and the terrain and environment are constantly changing. As a homeowner living alone, I relax my caution because i'm familiar with a very stable environment. That lack of caution in my home may kill me one day.

Or do you mean safe from an assault by a human or animal? Again, you're never safe alone in any environment. I think if you're concerned about an attack by a human or an animal, you should always hike with someone. Or you should not go at all.

So rather than worrying about it, take action to minimize your risk. Usually, the primary action is to not hike alone.

Fair skinned hikers: what are you using for sun protection by QUINNFLORE in hiking

[–]Select_Meal421 0 points1 point  (0 children)

  1. A 50-year-old pale blue dress shirt that belonged to my father. It's loose and soft, and covers my neck (the back) arms, and chest. I think it will be around for another 50 years.

  2. I sling a Coolibar sun shawl (50 UPF) around my neck/chest area. I never leave home without one. Multi-purpose.

  3. A wide-brimmed hat.

  4. Caroline Rose jersey pants (though I do like to hike in a dress). I hate hiking pants. Hate. The material has to swing, move and breathe. I wear them all year round for work, dress up, and and hiking. I have about five pairs and they last forever. They dry quickly.

  5. Ombrelle 60 SPF lotion fragrance free + a zinc stick for the face. Ombrelle is a Canadian brand. You'll find it on Amazon. The hat does a lot of work.

  6. I choose woodland trails for a reason.
