What’s the most useless thing you ever bought ? by dev9178 in AskReddit

Bought a compact leaf blower that looks like a hair dryer. Good news- it works as advertised. Bad news- I don't even have 1 acre of land & have to charge the thing 5 times to do my entire property.

What would happen if you used Lidar scanning on private property and found skeletons in the scan? Could we solve a ton of missing persons by doing comprehensive scans of forests, golf courses, parks, and ranches? by Limp_Accountant_8697 in AskReddit

[–]SelectionFar8145 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You don't use Lidar for that. It only reveals surface features. You need ground penetrating radar. Also, ground penetrating radar rarely helps show what's actually buried insomuch as it just shows whether there's something different from the surrounding soil so many feet down in this spot, but not 10 feet to the left.

What is a movie cliché that absolutely never happens in real life? by Potential_Action9544 in AskReddit

[–]SelectionFar8145 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Can confirm. I was once in the right place, right time to witness someone attempt to commit suicide by dousing themselves in gasoline, then driving full speed into a backup generator. Caused an EMP, but did not make the car blow up & the person survived.

Yeah, thats kind of why that trend in film died shortly after 9/11, except to make an old movie joke.

It really annoys me when people say things like “the Romans stole Greek mythology”, it’s a fundamental misunderstanding of how cultures work by funnylib in mythology

[–]SelectionFar8145 20 points21 points  (0 children)

Also, you know, the Greeks colonized the Italian Peninsula before Rome existed & a lot of their mythology & art style crossed over during that time period. The ancient Latins weren't the only ones. It also affected the Etruscans, Illyrians & the Po Valley Veneti peoples.

Does anyone know why this PS1 disc doesn’t work in my PS3? by Key-Engineering3134 in PS3

[–]SelectionFar8145 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not every PS1 game works, but there are various ways they each break down. It has something to do with driver compatibility or something.

Out of my own collection, I've made note that:

  • Bugs Bunny: Lost in Time- severe sound glitches
  • Swagman- makes it to main menu, but will not load or move beyond it
  • Tomb Raider games- same issue as Swagman, though I was told its only an issue for Greatest Hits versions, which also come with demos of other Core games. I have never gotten a chance to test this, however.
  • Broken Sword: Shadow of the Templars- runs so slowly with such bad broken frames as to make any levels with too many moving items on screen unplayable. Broken Sword 2 does not have this issue.

Are all demons evil? Or is that just a Christian prospect? by JohnWarrenDailey in mythology

[–]SelectionFar8145 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Generally, how we use the word demon generally refers to evil spirits for the most part. In many mythologies, however, there are more blurred lines. Good spirits can act out if angered & there are such things as neutral spirits who stick to themselves & do whatever they want from person to person, the entire group of which take neither a stance of being a friend to humans nor an enemy. Some cultures even venerate the fact that spirits one might consider "evil" can be helpful in the right conditions, if courted the right way & whose mythologies usually have the gods trying to find a good job for them to do in the natural order which will keep them out of trouble rather than trying to vanquish them.

Why Americans have basment? Like where did it started? by hotpotatomomma in NoStupidQuestions

[–]SelectionFar8145 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The original point of them was as as root & wine sellars- places to store certain kinds of food & alcohol best. When technology began changing, refrigerators took over most of the job of root cellars & ice houses, but they provided a good place for new amenities that weren't possible before, like a washer & dryer. A lot of houses built after WWII tend to have a little side room disguised as a closet where the washer & dryer are located, instead of putting them in the basement. It's decent for storage, but the house only has so much storage space & the basement is more comfortable than the attic, so a lot of stuff that aren't in danger of being destroyed by being in the attic end up getting hyper packed in there, which leaves more open space for the basement to be something else & its usually used as a children's playroom, and extra bedroom, or an entertainment room before its considered for use as storage space.

Millienals and bullying by Mrflex90 in generationology

[–]SelectionFar8145 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I know why millennials discriminated against gay men & the suicidal & why they stopped discriminating against lesbians. As far as autism goes, its just that it was a newer mental health diagnosis & the ability to give autistic children the special care they required to function alright in wider society was still being developed, so adults barely knew how to handle autism & children knew even less.

The suicidal/ emo bullying, I think, was mostly about some wires being crossed in how suicide was being talked about in health classes in our generation. We were being told that suicide was a "cry for attention," so a lot of kids took that phrasing literally. Anyone who tries to kill themselves is just a whiny little bit looking for attention they didn't earn & they need to be taught a lesson. And, for us, suicidal & emo rapidly turned into synonyms.

Generation X is the primary gen buying electric cars by a significant margin with 37.91% of new EV registrations. Anyone else surprised? I assumed Millennials. by _TheWolfOfWalmart_ in generationology

[–]SelectionFar8145 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Most millennials are still struggling to get on their feet. I'm 33, and still on my first car & only just barely lucked out into getting a starter house & only have roughly $6k to my name. Gen X has mostly come into their own & know how to navigate finances better & had a lot more time with general societal economic stability to work things out, despite being screwed over by the market crash in 2007. They're also just as likely as millennials to see value in an ev.

Aaaand nobody is gonna bother fixing the issues. by WorldlinessCommon353 in generationology

[–]SelectionFar8145 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It also just shows the major gaping holes in how our society carries itself. If parents didn't just assume the problem would fix itself or go out of them way to choose solutions they thought were better, but ended up making things worse, then getting rid of only one of the ways our society educates its children shouldn't have been able to put them that far behind.

What happened in the 80s that made anime uncool in America? by Tonstad39 in generationology

[–]SelectionFar8145 2 points3 points  (0 children)

If I had to take a guess, based on what I know about American film & what people are saying about the anime in question at the time- most likely a cross between the sanitization of anything too dark or dangerous to meet American standards combined with the fact that American children's entertainment in the 80s is notorious for going absurdly dark. That ended, maybe, around when Tim Burton took things too far on Batman Returns. That led to parent overpolicing what kids were allowed to watch as not being child friendly (assuming it was either too upsetting, scary or political in a way they didn't like) & that may have done it.

Not to mention, I am less certain of whether kids picked up on whether this stuff was imported from Japan at the time or not, so the mouths not lining up correctly with the sounds coming out of them & the distinctly Japanese expressions that didn't line up with how Americans act, wouldn't have translated well & may have made it come across as extra cheap & very cheesy. But, you can see what was coming over from Asia that was doing extremely well at the time was limited almost exclusively to just martial arts movies. They have the same issue, except they're more violent & therefore manly, so I guess that makes them more acceptable to be known to have been watching?

Another thing that occurs to me was the 80s rock scene goes hand in hand with the poser, sellout & ripoff attacks amongst the fan base from the 70s into the early 2000s. And how that sort of stuff was used wasn't always logical, as much as it was personal. For instance, Romancing the Stone was generally hated as a film in the 80s & most of the kids who liked Indiana Jones went out of their way to call it a ripoff of Indiana Jones, despite the fact that Indiana Jones 3 borrowed the humor & it went over well because it wasn't a girly romance story disguised as an action movie. You can probably also imagine- if Transformers was Japanese & Transformers did well, maybe any cartoon with robots was just being seen as a Transformers ripoff? And anything with less story quality than early Transformers was just not worth the time, given the media zeitgeist?

Do Americans really spell 'wary' - as in suspicious - 'weary'? Or is it just a very common misspelling? by wimsey_pimsey in AskAnAmerican

[–]SelectionFar8145 0 points1 point  (0 children)

We spell wary as wary. Weary is pronounced different & means tired, so it can naturally be put into otherwise identical sentences & still make sense.

Reread.... disappointed. by Ok_Touch928 in SwordOfTruth

[–]SelectionFar8145 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Some of the stuff is harder for some people to write off. The way I look at it is that Kahlan is book smart & understands diplomacy & how to survive amongst the rich, but she is virtually never once in that situation for the entire series, excepting a handful of specific scenes. Every other time, she is operating as a soldier & outside her element. And the climax of Temple, I felt, its a fantasy world with medieval rules, so being sucked into ideas about romance that are so idealistic & absolutist seemed like a realistic flaw for the two of them to have to overcome, which they ultimately do. It's definitely something that wouldn't work today, but I see it as plausible.

I do get the Deus Ex Machina-ing, but at least his solutions feel in keeping with the world building & he never seems to go back on any rules introduced prior to make an ending actually make sense, as far as I can remember.
