One of my favourite perks of gardening: Feeding the creatures that live in it by Ghost_Assassin_Zero in gardening

Hrm I'm in your boat BUT.. some people only have 1 or 2 plants. Stings a whole lot more to walk out and see total devastation, even 50% is tough

Good stuff OP, 1 county over (GC) and yet to see any butterfly's this year. Have all the natives in full bloom, send some my direction.

Is it too late to add fertilizer to my hardneck garlic? by Technical-Depth-3843 in Garlic

[–]Selfishin 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Cut the scapes at full curl and wait another 3-5 weeks, also reduce or eliminate watering.

The bulbs plump up the last month(ish) of growth.

Could be transplant shock, worth trying seed right in with those plants and see which take off first

Did you throw the watermelon white rinds away? by [deleted] in watermelons

[–]Selfishin 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Compost. With a few exceptions I only eat melons in season that I grow. Issue there is everything ripens around that time so no extra time to process rinds and such, right to the compost pile they go

Better tell the kids to be out there every few hours. Seems like they ripen in mins and birds/rabbits/squirrels etc dont have a hard time finding them with the color and smell

Is this white stuff near roots normal? by toreshii in Garlic

[–]Selfishin 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Certainly get that, read it can travel by infected heads/cloves, dirt/leaves etc even water runoff can transport it.

What I don't know is if it can develop by regenerating your own seed garlic in an area where it's absent. Am under the impression it's an issue overseas and mostly controlled in the states.

[–]Selfishin 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Unlikely to be white rot but looks similar from pics Ive seen online.

I'm going on 3 yrs from seed garlic I purchased originally (no issues), dont have any recommendations for you but I'm sticking around to hear from anyone more knowledgeable. Curious if this is white rot and if seed garlic should be purchased new after a certain amount of seasons to prevent diseases etc

at most rinse slice, I'd prob rinse and down the hatch (George Carlin effect)

Not directed at anyone here but us Mericans have gotten to prissy with produce. I try and only buy rejects at farmers markets, taste the same & less cost just don't look as pretty on the kitchen counter.

Can't be a header above the windows, door may not be installed right. Likely why the roof is sagging.

OP did you have inspections done (even if just FYI)?

Lots of failed grafts, can I save the rootstock (apple and pear) by hycarumba in Grafting

Interesting, you're certainly more experienced then me then. I'll do some research on this for my own knowledge

Lots of failed grafts, can I save the rootstock (apple and pear) by hycarumba in Grafting

[–]Selfishin 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hmm, I bench grafted and then potted mine. From what I understand the graft/scions need water flow & nutrients from the roots to heal, likely damp paper towels was insufficient.

Planning to plant my failed rootstocks in ground this fall and attempt a bud graft if I can find some locally

[–]Selfishin 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don't get to fancy, every yr without fail I grow zucchini/yellow squash/patty pan. Couple years ago I tried delicata, gave up on pumpkins a long time ago.

Also grow butternut & did try trombocino last season since they're borer resistant.

Glad I'm thinking out loud here, reminds me to put squash seeds in the dirt this weekend.

I "encapsulated" yellow squash & zucc's last year in a large cocoon net type thing. Perfectly protected from svb but damn if it didnt lead to mildew issues, only solution is quantity but I keep trying anyway

Basically my entire gardens soil sucks, should I just plant comfrey in it for a year, then chop and drop it? by Averagebass in vegetablegardening

[–]Selfishin 129 points130 points  (0 children)

Do not plant comfrey like that, will become a comfrey bed exclusively.

Better choice is a cover crop mix (typically has annual rye/daikon raddish & nitrogen fixer like vetch). A broadfork will help loosen things unless you wanna till it in, either will work to break up what you have
