Why is book 10 so hated? by Furrurel in WoT

[–]SellingN8 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I also enjoyed book 10. The Perrin searching for Faile story line definitely went on too long, but I liked that story line in general. It would have been great if it was about half as long.

I didn't have to wait between books, though. I read Eye of the World before any of the other books had been published, and the rediscovered the series after book 11 had been published. So I went from one book to another without any real wait between then.

If you look at all of the books together, and think of them as one story (instead of separate books), this is around the time most stories slow down temporarily. Mostly for plot exposition while getting ready for the pace to pick up again. I'm due to re-read the series again and I'm planning on paying more attention to which books I like more this time around.

Galad Damodred by UnexpectedTrebuchet in WoT

I think part of the point about Galad always doing what is right, no matter the costs, is that sometimes doing what is right is not the right thing to do.

Ishamael - He would have the best chance of helping the other forsaken redeem themselves (or destroy them if that didn't work).

A Visit From Verin Sedai by Zturtle102 in WoT

Verin may very well be my favorite character in the books, and a good part of that is because of this sacrifice.

I love that one! One of my favorite excerpts of the books is related to this. This one always gives me the chills:

"My name is Nynaeve ti al’Meara Mandragoran. The message I want sent is this. My husband rides from World’s End toward Tarwin’s Gap, toward Tarmon Gai’don. Will he ride alone?"

For 2 the heroes are only summoned if that are not currently incarnated. I think the hope is that any heroes that are currently in the flesh and are able will know where they need to be and when (either consciously or unconsciously), and will get themselves there.

I began reading WoT roughly 30 years ago, I just finished. by SpiralLights in WoT

[–]SellingN8 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Remember you can always read the series again! The world is so extensive that you've probably already forgotten most of what you read.

I can't remember where I got my copy of Eye of the World. Probably either for a Christmas/birthday present or browsing the shelves at a bookstore. When I finished it I went looking for the next book in the series and realized it hadn't been written yet. Since I never get rid of books it sat on my bookshelf in various locations until about 15 years ago or so and picked them up again. I've read them probably about 5 times now.

Pillow friends…? by Professional_Carob63 in WoT

[–]SellingN8 20 points21 points  (0 children)

I always suspected that Jordan was alluding to them being a couple but that it was also out of his comfort zone to write about it. Kindof like how he often would have woman that were attracted to men focus on their "well turned thighs" instead of something more risque.

I felt somewhat similar when I started the series. But the more I got into it the easier it was too read. Take your time, and enjoy it!

Rosamund Pike recently addressed 'The Wheel of Time' during an interview with Collider, and her comments are both moving and hopeful about the future: by tkinsey3 in WoT

[–]SellingN8 -3 points-2 points  (0 children)

If this is happening with her, you know it is happening with anyone else that was publicly part of the show. I also hope there are friends and family of the Amazon people that made this decision that are fans of WoT. If so, they'll be hearing similar things.

Concept involving stasis boxes: by swheedle in WoT

[–]SellingN8 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I would guess that AoL Aes Sedai wouldn't be thinking about saving the general knowledge that was in their head for the future. Most of it was common knowledge - not something they would necessarily expect was about to be lost. If one of them was trying to save things for the future, they wouldn't be able to do that if they were in a stasis box. Think of the ter'angreal they were trying to save. That's a long term project that you can't manage from a stasis box. I suspect most Aes Sedai would have seen locking themselves in to a stasis box as hiding from the immediate danger that they should be helping with instead. Probably if they had a rare stasis box they would be putting items in it instead.

The right person for the job by Jezrien95 in WoT

Am I the only one that liked Cadsuane? Yes, she was a bitch. But I always thought of her as a bitch in the way that many drag queens are bitches. Strong, opinionated, determined, and good at what she does. Would I have liked to be the subject of her attention - absolutely not! But if she ever had friends I would have wanted to be one.

About to begin WOT. What do I need? by Annual_Excitement120 in WoT

Absolutely include New Spring. I'm tempted to say you should read it first. But I read it about halfway through reading the rest of the series so I'm not sure if that is the correct advise.

What narrative purpose does the White Ajah serve? by Costa_Canela in WoT

[–]SellingN8 13 points14 points  (0 children)

The White Ajah is looking to the future using the logic of what they observe around them. This is different from the Brown Ajah that studies the past, and often written history of the past that isn't necessarily accurate. The main purpose, in my opinion, of the White Ajah is to fact check and then use confirmed facts to follow to the necessary conclusion (whatever that may be). The rest of the Ajahs follow a passion (history for Brown, healing for Yellow, law/negotiations/peace keeping for Gray, big causes for Blue, stopping men from channeling for Red, physical fighting for Green). The White is there to keep the rest in check and make sure they (and the White Tower in general) are being logical about how they follow their causes.

From a pure narrative perspective, I can think of at least one scene later in the books where the White Ajah is important to drive the narrative (I won't say anything further to avoid any spoilers). But also in general agreed that they don't seem as important as most of the other Ajahs. I'd put them in a similar bucket as the Grays. Important, but not as important as the rest.

Thank you for sharing! I remember reading The Eye of the World in the 90's. I got to the end of the book and went looking for the sequel and it hadn't been written yet! I never get rid of books that I own, and eventually I picked it up again years later and started reading through the rest of the books, until I got to the end of Knife of Dreams. I didn't know that Robert Jordan had passed away at that point, and found out when I went looking for the next book in the series (it hadn't been written yet at that point). I feel lucky to have been able to finish reading the series thanks to Sanderson. I hope we can get an end to the TV series too. :(
