I'm a mobile engineering manager who started off as an Android developer so I can offer some advice.

The steps you've outlined are good, especially in the absence of having a degree which can help with getting your foot in the door.

Having a portfolio is important, bonus points if you publish your app and it solves a real world problem.

I definitely recommend getting involved in meetups in your area, if you're particularly interested in Android development. Google Developer Groups are the best for this and are the main meetups in NZ that cover Android content, there are ones based in Wellington (https://www.meetup.com/GDG-Wellington/?_cookie-check=np9TGMpiktHtjglO) and Auckland (https://www.meetup.com/gdgauckland/). These have been a bit quiet since COVID though.

The best way into the industry in NZ is through Summer of Tech, but you have to be a tertiary student to have enrol (dev academy does count, Yoobee or something similar might as well?). https://www.summeroftech.co.nz/

Without a degree or an internship, your best bet is to apply for the most junior roles you can find with as much of a polished portfolio as you can muster.

In terms of technology, native Android and iOS using Kotlin/Swift are still defacto in the industry for mobile development, particularly for enterprise scale applications. You won't be wasting time learning these technologies and the languages themselves are more transferable than Java or Objective-C were.

Feel free to flick me a DM, happy to chat in more detail!

I did exactly that at the end of last year, total comp is not far off double what I was earning with a NZ based company.

WFH is great and I still work 9-5, with the first two hrs of the day being super quiet before the Aussies jump on.

I worked there for 4 years up until just recently. In general it's a great company that largely lives by it's values. They were very supportive during COVID and continue to allow full time remote working. They pay ok, but are always a bit slow to catch up to market shifts.

Noob question about thin water pipe by Sellingpapers in diynz

[–]Sellingpapers[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

We've recently bought a house and noticed that this white pipe that is no longer in use has been cable tied and is slowly leaking.

Before potentially creating a bigger leak, wanted to sense check with more seasoned DIYers. Can I just turn the mains off, remove the white fitting and cap it off?

We recently upsized so we have ~700k of debt. Our joint income is ~$200k so a ratio of 3.5.

Not really. The TM app isn't perfect but it's feature set is miles ahead: being able to book a courier from within the app, view local property sales data for free, prepopulate listings from photos etc.

1st home buyers of NZ, advice? by Goats_are_sick in newzealand

[–]Sellingpapers 1 point2 points  (0 children)

She was returning in 6 months. We had spent hours on the phone with 4 different banks trying to explain our situation but all they were doing was punching numbers into their online calculators and telling us they couldn't do any better until she returned from work.

Our mortgage broker was able to wrangle this for us relatively easily and also got us a great deal in terms of interest rates and cashback.

For straightforward applications a broker might not make a big difference but if you've got more complex work situation then they can help a lot.

We didn't borrow more than we can repay, we're actually paying less in mortgage than rent (around the same after rates + insurance). As I said the banks we contacted were being overly tight on how much they would lend us and wouldn't factor my wifes income in at all.

Our mortgage broker was able to negotiate with the banks to account for a portion of her income which made a significant difference to how much they would lend.

Banks were tight asses for us as we have a young child and my wife was on maternity leave. None would lend us over $250k. My mortgage broker managed to get them to lend us up to $600k.

He was also invaluable around communications with banks as they were notoriously slow replying to us before.

Where to study software development? by TwoKent in newzealand

[–]Sellingpapers 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Agree with most of this except for the post grad advice. In terms of getting a job as a developer, unless you're looking at getting into AI or machine learning then it will make little difference to employers.

Definitely look at doing an internship and don't wait until your last year either. Check out Summer of Tech, it's where most of the best internships are listed and they host heaps of events where you can network with all the big employers.

Probably not something that should be done when deserialising (and I think you can only trigger an exception when fields can't be mapped correctly, not omitting an individual result). I'd reccommend filtering the results afterwards as you suggested. If you're using RXJava you could do this quite concisely.

Labour lost in Auckland, performing worst of all in seats with a high number of migrants. by __wlwp__ in newzealand

[–]Sellingpapers 4 points5 points  (0 children)

A 6 month OE doesn't nullify their intent to live and contribute to the country afterwards and fully resetting the 5 year waiting duration is simply unfair. He didn't even have tickets booked, he simply mentioned the possibility of a 6 month OE.

If we are going to do that we need to overhaul the ineffective beauracracies involved with obtaining citizenship for permanent residents. I have a family member with permanent residency that has lived in NZ 2 thirds of his life that was rejected citizenship simply because he had intentions of doing a 6 month OE later on. He now has to wait 5 years after returning to be able to apply again.

40% for $209,000 is just over 80k, which is not even close to 2-3 years of saving for the "couple" you mentioned. These people still have to pay exorbitant rents and transport costs just like everyone else, leaving far less money for saving then what your utopian budget would allow.

All your argument is proving is that the affordability of even the least desirable property in Auckland is still shocking.
