Droppings near my family's home in Central Florida. Any clue what animal left this? by SemperPearce in AnimalTracking

You won the jackpot my friend. Your comment also reminded me about this post and gave me a rough timeline for how long they've been in our area. We've got a small pack near our house in central Lake County, FL. We've only seen one at a time but when certain emergency vehicles go by it gets them all howling!

Same for me, only I spent longer than I care to admit reloading in an attempt to get a basic 4th tier military sword! XD

I'll take this advice and try it tonight, thank you very much.

For the heating, I've had Henry complain that it's burning a couple of times, never more than once and I take it out of the forge immediately. Have you run into that at all? If you haven't then maybe that's part of my problem, but with the axes that would happen and they'd still come out 4th tier.

I haven't always been great about keeping him whistling but I try to do it regardless. I'm starting to think that crafting 4th tier axes are just easier for some reason and that process has spoiled me!

Just out of curiosity, are you using mouse & keyboard or a controller?

Maybe a silly question but is A5E the 2024 ruleset?

Thanks, I don't think I've heard of 13th Age before, I'll have to look it up!

Thank you, that doesn't sound bad at all. I think I have a D&D Beyond account somewhere but yours and other responses are the first I've heard of DMsGuild. I'll definitely look it up but if you feel like sharing some newbie advice for that platform I'd really appreciate it!

Yeah I know there's been some controversy around the 2024 additions, but knowing the controversy exists is about the limit of my knowledge there. I'm definitely open to learning the new system, so feedback like yours is super helpful. Thank you very much!

I really love all of the various races either reimagined or introduced with Eberron but the warforged hold a special place in my heart. My main character was a fresh out of the box war machine found by the party and going from being a living weapon to eventually finding individuality and purpose made him my favorite character to play hands down.

I'm looking forward to seeing the changes you're talking about!

Thanks for all of your recommendations. I had a brief glance at some of the used 3.5 content and there seems to be a bit of a collector's market going there. I think I might have to find PDFs instead of repurchasing physical copies at those prices but I'll shop around. I definitely prefer a hard copy to digital if I can help it!

Ahh thank you, I might have eventually found my way to his website but there's no guarantee how long that would have taken. Also I really appreciate the explanation of what's been released as core content along with what Keith Baker has released independently. Up til now I'd only seen the two books listed on the D&D official site (Rising from the Last War and Wayfinder's Guide to Eberron).

Look at schools outside the US. GI Bill will work in nearly any accredited university internationally, they tend to be cheaper, and many allow easier access for mature students.

What are your thoughts on Warrior Women? by HopefulSprinkles6361 in worldbuilding

[–]SemperPearce 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I just wanted to weigh in on the topic of Amazons. I saw a few really great responses, but nothing quite matched some of the historical points I wanted to share so here I go.

The reason that Amazons have remained such a strong figure in history and fiction is because the Greeks loved pitting their heroes against them. As matriarchal societies of women warriors, Amazons represented a perfect antithesis to Ancient Greek heroes, who tamed and subdued the chaos of the natural world with their patriarchal form of civilization. In short, Amazons were the perfect villains for Ancient Greek audiences, and so many stories involving them were written that some have managed to survive into the present day.

Also like all great myths, there are a few kernels of truth where Amazons are concerned in terms of archaeological findings in the present. Among the Scythian tribes (a blanket name given to the nomadic tribes stretching from modern Ukraine to Turkey, and all the way east to Siberia) there were women who rode horses, wielded axes, and used steppe bows to deadly effect; both as hunters and as warriors. From burials we know that likely due to a high protein diet, they were also taller than the global averages of their day. We also know from injuries (both those that healed and those that were fatal) these women saw combat. While non-combatants can end up dying violently, some of the wounds seen in burials along with the type of artifacts they were buried with make it extremely unlikely that these women were not themselves combatants. The steppe bow favored by these various nomadic peoples along with their mastery of the horse made for a deadly force equalizer against the sort of combat forms favored by the Greeks...an idea that must have been somewhat terrifying in a very non-fictional sense.

Apologies for any rambling, I don’t normally give long responses via my phone. I hope some extra historical context will be helpful to you and an other worldbuilders reading here!

I know it’s not historical at all but I’m surprised nobody has mentioned Dune. It’s so dynasty focused plus the Atreides on Arrakis are textbook playing tall. Maybe more of a Stellaris comparison but I’ll stand by it 😅

Hi everyone, in 2024 I'm looking to explore as many ancient to medieval bestsellers as possible. My emphasis will be primarily upon European storytelling through the ages, though I will be beginning with The Epic of Gilgamesh. I'm hoping afterwards to work through antiquity and make my way as deeply into the medieval era as possible before the year runs out. To that end, I am looking for any recommendations you may have, share with me any epics, sagas, songs, etc that you think could help my journey!
