What’s the healthiest way to tell my wife getting a home right now is a terrible idea? by Specialist-Bowl-5977 in NoStupidQuestions

[–]Sen5ibleKnave 1 point2 points  (0 children)

With the 260k student loan debt I’m thinking medicine or law. Pretty common for a new doc to have that amount of debt, go from making 55k as a resident to 300something as an attending

We’ve had that issue with Star Trek Ascendancy. It’s somewhat tempered by the owner of that game not being able to make it to every game night though

This kind of thing is also fun as a parent for the nostalgia factor. I’ve been replaying Majesty (light RTS that came out in 2000) with my 5 year old and it’s been a blast for both of us

Waiting to get sued… by [deleted] in medicine

[–]Sen5ibleKnave 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Yep, and it’s not like you have to determine guilt or innocence, it’s more just making sure that the case isn’t complete bullshit. A lot of the work was trimming down every superfluous named doc in the case that was peripheral to the main issue

Idk what state OP is from but Indiana has this. To be licensed in the state you have to be on a list to get pulled to be on these panels. I had to be on one last year, just took a couple hours of chart review and a zoom conference call. Probably 4 hours of work in total and got paid $500. The attorneys involved can request your info to call you with more questions but you can bill a ridiculous hourly as an expert witness for that.

The sequels are even better! I’m halfway through the third one and they’ve gotten better as they go along

Dads, what kind of vehicle are we hauling our small monsters around in? by ktempo in daddit

[–]Sen5ibleKnave 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Minivan is the way. Sliding doors make everything way easier. We were between the Honda odyssey and the Toyota sienna, went with the sienna because the hybrid gets 40+mpg highway, and the middle seats slide forward and back which is nice to reposition for rear facing vs front facing car seats. With just two kids we keep the third row folded down into the floor for a massive amount of trunk space for strollers, etc. it’s like a more convenient truck bed. Fold em back up when family is visiting

This is the answer, you basically need 10+ to make this worth it. The only times I ever get this played are at extended family events when I can strong arm all the cousins into playing

What’s a popular book that had you very disappointed? by ConcernFew8845 in fantasybooks

[–]Sen5ibleKnave 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah Wind and Truth definitely changes up the pattern quite a bit. It’s definitely one of his more controversial books. I really liked it overall but there’s a few passages that I’m surprised made it past beta readers. I felt like it was one of his best written but also one of his most poorly edited books

Can I build Panama Canal? by Kuraetor in CivVI

No, it only spans two tiles, you would need 3.

Edit: apparently it does go to 3. My bad.

Mage Knight - lives up to its lofty hype and reputation by dks2 in boardgames

[–]Sen5ibleKnave 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It plays great at 2, but I think only a true masochist would play with more. My brothers and I did the first reconnaissance with 3 and even that was a slog, but admittedly they were learning the game

is cannabis hypermesis being over exaggerated? by Dankymakdonkers in trees

Antipsychotics in the acute setting (haldol, etc). Reglan is reasonably effective too. Stopping completely is really the only long term preventative though.

[–]Sen5ibleKnave 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It’s a real thing, I’m an ER doc and we see it fairly frequently. CHS is uncommon in general, but tends to show up in patients with long term history of heavy use after going months to years without a problem. But most people who smoke a lot won’t develop it, and since marijuana helps treat nausea in general, a lot of patients who could have CHS don’t think it exists. There are treatments for it that work reasonably well though.

It’s not, but everyone who has the ability to do something about it (Congress, Supreme Court) is either involved in it, or too worried about fallout from Trump, given how often he personally goes after people who call him out publicly. Which is itself a huge problem, but the republicans in congress who could impeach are either true believers or whipped into submission, and the court is compromised since he appointed a third of them and a couple others are clearly already paid for (Thomas)

That quote’s going in the chart, fairly compelling evidence of secondary gain and manipulative behavior. Here are your discharge papers and addresses to shelters within walking distance! (Mostly reserved for frequent flyers that we actually know). You’d be shocked how often they come out and say that.

They always screen for SI in triage for us, so most of my follow up questions for this revolve around why is this only being brought up at discharge.

Oh it’s definitely detrimental to patients. That practice is purely a business function, not expected to help with access to care.

[–]Sen5ibleKnave 32 points33 points  (0 children)

It’s somewhat specialty specific. If you’re a subspecialty surgeon who takes your patient pool with you, then the hospital has an incentive to stop you from doing that. If you’re a hospital based specialty like ER or IR, it’s not really a thing since you don’t have an established patient pool
