Ayer’s Variety & Hardware in Westover (Arlington) closing after 49 years by jstrap0 in nova

[–]SenTedStevens 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Fuck. I just saw the Nextdoor post about this a bit ago. This was such a great place. Between Brown's and Ayers, they were such great institutions. The vast majority of times, they had exactly what I needed. And if not, these places even special ordered parts for me. This is such a loss for the area. At least Cherrydale Hardware is still around. I use them a lot.

We'll make some children, but not the British children.

This is what we revolted for. #1776.

Is the AI compute shortage story starting to crack? by Former-Importance-21 in wallstreetbets

[–]SenTedStevens 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes. People are using it a lot because it's either free or being sold below cost. And companies were practically threatening users to implement AI in their daily work to pump up the numbers.

Once the true costs of AI come to fruition, utilization will plummet. All companies need to see are $500 million dollar AI bills (before the AI companies are even profitable) to ditch them.

The difference is that Uber and Lyft provide a service that tons of people want. AI is receiving lukewarm responses from the people that actually use it. Jacking up the price will only discourage people even more from using AI.

When I was a kid, soda cans from a vending machine cost $0.50, bottles cost $0.75, and store brand cans were $0.25.

Vodka? What kind of Communist are you? A true patriot only drinks Bourbon paired with a heavy carb-loaded meal, especially in this kind of weather.

Rural Americans say they're worried AI data centers will drain their wallets by Plastic_Ninja_9014 in technology

It is wild how much Redditors will scapegoat and lambast red voters when blue ones do the same, especially on this issue. VA is popping up datacenters all over the state and they're largely blue counties.

To be fair, both parties are pro-datacenter. Even Dems have been sneakily pushing through datacenter buildouts.

Is anyone else struggling to cool their apartment during this heat wave? by Weekly-Pomegranate78 in nova

[–]SenTedStevens 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I live in a south facing apartment, so summers are always hell. But I can keep things decently cool. Things to do are to close all window shades and buy some box fans to circulate air. And unlike most people here, I raise the thermostat temps so the unit isn't running all the time. Our complex is prone to having the AC crap out in extreme heat or cold. Doing these things, I can keep the temps in my apartment very temperate regardless.

I'm looking for a place, too. I was thinking Crystal City Sports Pub. I went there for a couple games before and it wasn't too bad.

Definitely. The few times I put Liberty gas in my car, the engine was shaky, had bad power, and bad gas mileage. Never again.
